Has anyone read Catriona Mcpherson's Dandy Gilver books and if so do they have to be read in order. I have the 5th in the series but don't want to read it if I have missed too much back-story. Thanks.
Jane wrote: "Thank you, I have read all Josephine Tey's books and I have also read Patricia Wentworth, if you like Tey you may like Nicola Upson's books which have Tey as a main character."I have never heard of her, defintely going to find them. Thanks so much.

I'm impatient so I checked it out. I really enjoyed it, but did wish I had read the first one first. I think it could have been read on it's own. But I didn't finish it and am on the lookout for the first. So, I've got no real advice, just my own experience to share.

I do prefer to read series in order if I can.

The first one is called An Expert in Murder and is a really good read.
I've discovered Nevada Barr thanks to Diane. Her writing feels like a mix between Sharon McCrumb and Dana Stabenow to me, so I'm enjoying her books accordingly. Also great for me, her protagonist moves around the country working at various national parks which is helping me eliminate several states in the "50 States - 50 Books" challenge!
just finished Book of the Dead by patricia cornwell, this one was not like the old scarpetta books :(

Glad I'm not the only one who thought True Blue was beyond horrible.

I agree PC seems to have lost her way. I think Scarpetta has become a thoroughly unlikeable character.

LOL! No she hasn't tossed out her niece. In fact Lucy has become equally 'unlikeable'. I really enjoyed her early books too. PC appears to have lost the plot around book 11 or 12 when she did something which to me was unnecessary, unbelievable and frankly quite ridiculous. I won't say what that was in case you decide to read more. Suffice to say the recent books have been light on plot and heavy on the emotional baggage carried around by the main characters.

More misery than mystery, and the books did lose luster after the silly event.

Last man standing was a fantastic book. My favourite books by Baldacci's are his Maxwell and King stories!
I just finished "The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing", the second in the series of Vish Puri mysteries by Tarquin Hall and enjoyed it a lot, although much of the plot was quite predictable indeed.
I am reading The Eight by Katherine Neville and I'm enjoying it so far.I totally agree about the Scarpetta books I stopped reading them about the same time, I don't know why Lucy had to become such an unpleasant character -glad it isn't just me. :)
Finished reading Rogue Island which I really enjoyed. A hardend newspaper reporter investigates a series of fires (arsons?) in his hometown of Providence, RI. Crisp writing and some quirky characters with touchs of wry humor.
I also listened to Chasing Vermeer, a YA or even childrens book. Fans of From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Faithwather would enjoy this.

Almost as silly but lets say it was straight out of a day time soap! Almost as bad as Bobby Ewing and the shower scene for those of us that remember Dallas!
I'm currently reading
. You are making me dread the next few books. :( I happen to like Lucy at this point and would be sad to end up disliking her later. I guess I have about 2 more books before I get to that point. I'm also reading
which is starting to get pretty good.
Dieter wrote: "I just finished "The Case of the Man Who Died Laughing", the second in the series of Vish Puri mysteries by Tarquin Hall and enjoyed it a lot, although much of the plot was quite predictable indeed."@Dieter, I read the first one,
The Case of the Missing Servant and enjoyed it. I do plan to read the others at some point. I can relate to them b/c I am also from India, Punjabi, just like Vish Puri.
Have you read any of the A Most Peculiar Malaysian Murder series? I would like to try those too.

I have read both of hers and loved the style x
I finished 3 recently:Shelter -- Coben is one of my favorite authors and this was his first foray into YA. Review posted.
The Sixes -- this was the first book I read by White but it won't be the last. Good suspense.
Creep -- LOVED this book. Can't believe it was a debut. Review posted.

I thought Creep was amazing too. More so I think because this could actually happen.

I'm really looking forward to her next one,
Freak. It's supposed to be a sequel. But it's not coming out til August :(
Fiona (Titch) wrote: "Mona wrote: "Yay! My library has both her novels :) Just put holds on both."You won't be sorry x"
Thanks for the reco's :). Looking forward to them. But I need more books in my TBR pile like I need a hole in my head! But I can't stop myself.
I constantly check the new books shelves and shelving carts at my library. For a while, I had stopped picking up impromptu books but I have relapsed. I am also constantly requesting items I see on blogs and/or discussion threads.Besides, I am always checking our library sale shelves and thrift store bookshelves.
Finally, I'm a magazine subscription junkie(MANY subscriptions and yet never enough), another source for my TBR list.

It was a great plot--with interesting plotlets--and a likeable detective in the middle of the action.
I haven't gotten to the second--A Bali Conspiracy Most Foul-- which sends our intrepid investigator to Bali after a terrorist bombing of a nightclub. But now that you've reminded me....
