Just finished This Body of Deathby Elizabeth George and Like Clockwork by Margie Orford. Both were very good. If anybody requires a book in South Africa for the UN challenge, the Margie Orford takes place in Cape Town.

Only on pg. 60 and it always takes me a little to get back to these atmospheric and slower paced reads but am really liking it now.
Just finished A Cold Day for Murderthe first in the Kate Shugak series, a re-read for me. These are always good, solid mysteries, I think quite accurate as far as the location goes, though I've never been to Alaska. From my own experience with Crow and Cheyenne tribal issues, the presentation of Native American attitudes and politics are accurate, so I do enjoy this series.

. I am really enjoying this book. He's so descriptive that you picture yourself there watching it all happen. You get tense just from some of what happens in the plot. I was outraged that he was in a holding cell and even more so when he was on the wrong floor. I can't put this book down.
As noted above, I recently picked up A Cold Treachery by Charles Todd.I am surprised at how much depth they are going into regarding Rutledge's problem. Seems like more than in previous books.

Jannene wrote: "...I can't put this book down. "Yeah, that happens with him. WHen I finished 61 Hours (wherein we must assume at the end he has been blown to smithereens), I spent weeks trying to imagine how he could have survived, and what the explanation would be, thinking, "too implausible." Then he came up with a perfectly plausible explanation.
I was relieved.
Now on with The girl who played with fire !!Would it be as sadistic and explosive as the The Girl with the dragon tattoo ??

I could only read about 50 pages of Lisa Black's
. I had to give it up as to me it was boring and too much like a TV
show ie: Body of Proof. Nothing new here. I guess
I read too much. Right now I am finishing
. Michael Connelly always gets it right!!!!!!!!! Agree?
I'm reading an Allison Leotta ARC for her June release. Very excited--so far, great book. Hopefully will finish tomorrow -- need to write today!
Finished the new Rutledge and it was very good, I think they get better with age. Now reading A Charitable Body: A Novel of Suspense and an ARC of The Strange Fate of Kitty Easton, loved her first book and this one is starting out to be just as good.
During my recent vacation to Mazatlan, along with scouring the galley proofs for Wicked Eddies for errors, I managed to read 2 mystery books while lounging by the pool or ocean. I enjoyed Carolyn Hart's Engaged to Die, and I very much enjoyed Nancy Pickard's The Whole Truth. In fact, I put the other two titles in that series on my to-read list, and my husband is reading THE WHOLE TRUTH now.
I just finished reading The Moving Target, a 1949 noir mystery by Ross MacDonald. It's the first in the Lew Archer series of books, and I am smitten. You can find my full review here.
Cliff wrote: "Nice review Jonathan. I read all the Lew Archer books over a period. The standard was consistently high so I think that if you liked the first you will like the rest. They are in the mould of Ra..."Thanks, Cliff. You're spot on about MacDonald and Chandler. Very similar, but there are some key differences. I've read all of Chandler's work so far, and now I'm going to have to do the same for MacDonald. I'm really looking forward to it.
Oh, and thanks for reading. ;)
I finished Playing for the Ashes by Elizabeth George. I liked the plot of the book but it was extremely long with what seemed like a lot of filler. 3 stars for me.
Georgia wrote: " Michael Connelly always gets it right!!!!!!!!! Agree? "With Connelly, even his sub-par books are better than most authors' best work.
Jonathan wrote: "I just finished reading The Moving Target, a 1949 noir mystery by Ross MacDonald. It's the first in the Lew Archer series of books, and I am smitten. You can find my full review here."HUGE Ross MacDonald fan here! I'm currently reading all his books in order. The last one I finished was The Instant Enemy, written in 1968. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but did not take the time to write a review.
Personally, I like MacDonald a little bit better than Chandler. (Egads, did I just say that in a group of mystery fans??!?) I just love Lew Archer's sardonic wit and insight into human character.
Just finished both Pelecanos and Mosley's new ones....WHAT IT WAS and ALL I DID WAS SHOOT MY MAN!!!!! Both Phenomenal as usual, two of the best authors out there in my mind. What It Was
All I Did Was Shoot My Man
Valerie wrote: "Personally, I like MacDonald a little bit better than Chandler. (Egads, did I just say that in a group of mystery fans??!?) I can't bring myself to say that he's better, mind you, but to each their own, eh?
And Phillip:
I read All I Did Was Shoot My Man a few weeks ago and was greatly impressed. It was my first Mosley book (got it as an ARC for early reviewing), and now I'm looking forward to reading more from him.
Just finished Darkness on the Edge of Town and was pleasantly surprised. My fear that the teenage victim would be a problem wasn't ... she wasn't a whiny, sullen, spoiled brat, not too bright in the way most teenagers are, but overall a kid I'd have liked (which is rare, for me!)Gave it a 3-star rating, liked it and would like to try another one or two and see how the series progresses.
Valerie wrote: Personally, I like MacDonald a little bit better than Chandler. ... I just love Lew Archer's sardonic wit and insight into human character. That insight and introspection is what made him a ground-breaker in the genre, I think.
Currently reading Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and Long Way Round: Chasing Shadows Across the World by Ewan McGregor
I just finished T Jefferson Parker's Cold Pursuit. Excellent! Cannot emphasize that enough. I love his character development and depth of plot. reading him is very comfortable... can't explain but I settle into him and enjoy him so much.Reading up above I see Pelecanos gets excellent ratings and recommendations. I haven't read him. Should I? Tell me more about him....
I am starting Charlie Huston's Caught Stealing as my next book.
Just finished Tollesbury Time Forever - Stuart Ayris and now about to start Last Train From Liguria - Christine Dwyer Hickey

You really are on a great streak, Tim.

One hot summer I went through all the Raymond Chandler books I could find. I loved them!I just finished The Case of the Missing Books. It was just okay. I guess I was expecting a book about a librarian to make more references to books and reading. I'm starting Death comes to Pemberly today. I've read all of P.D. James' books but this "sequel" to Pride and Prejudice is entirely different from her other series.
Finished Why Shoot a Butler?
day before yesterday. This dragged occasionally near the beginning but once it picked up, I raced through it. I love the English country home life it evoked and the sardonic nature of Amberly is quite humorous at times. I'll be reading more of these!
I just finished
. This was such an exciting book. Lee Child describes everything so you end up picturing yourself there as an observer just watching the story unfold. The plot was great and I was always wondering what was going to be next. You end up being outraged from the initial misunderstanding and how Jack Reacher ends up in the middle of this whole thing. I really liked Finlay and Reacher. They were such great characters. I am going to have to read the next in the series.
I just finished Blood Work which I enjoyed - I guessed a couple of the clues early on, but it ended up being more complex than I guessed. Not sure what to pick up next, watching your comments....

I will submit to you several I currently find excellent: Robert Crais and T. Jefferson Parker. I also like Jeffery Deaver. And Stephen Hunter is really the best, in my opinion. Michael Connelly is mostly top-notch.
I just finished reading Or She Dies by Gregg Hurwitz the begining was all you wanted in a good triller but the end was a disappointment.
I just finished reading The Sleepwalkers by Paul Grossman. It was a suspenseful mystery set in Berlin during the brink of Hitler's rule. I posted my review to my blog, so please feel free to read it and offer comments! Now I'm reading Dexter Is Delicious. This series has gotten a lot of criticism as it has aged, but I think these books are always a reliable source for entertainment.-Ethan

I finished Gallows View by Peter Robinson, the first Inspector Banks mystery. Lots going on here with a peeping tom, juvenile delinquints, and murder; it was pretty good. 3 1/2 stars.
