I recently listened to
by William Kent Krueger. It was the first in the series (I think Boundry Waters is second or 3rd), it was a pretty good story but the main character's personal life muddied the waters of the plot quite a bit. I think how far I go with the series will depend a lot on how the main character and his wife's relationship is handled going forward. There is a good bit of Native American culture and involvement in Iron Lake which is one of the things that kept me interested even though the "personal struggles" were crazy and I wanted to slap some sense into several characters.
Lynn wrote: "I think it was selected for cinematic value maybe....what I can believe is Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher! No way!"A newspaper columnist up here wrote a piece pleading for Cruise to not be let near it about a month ago. He suggests Daniel Craig would be better suited.

Reading a Y.A. book Envy
. Gregg Olsen is a local author and does lots of true crime. This is mysterious, heartbreaking, certainly have never read anything like it. Through my tears I know it is important to read this book. Thanks Gregg for putting this down on paper.
I finished Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall. This is the first book in the Martin Beck series. I enjoyed it but found it very slow moving (it's essentially a cozy-ish book). I think I've been spoiled by modern thrillers/mysteries that have lots of action.
Donna wrote: "The basic premise of lost children in the woods with one surviving reminds me of In the Woods by Tana French which..."Read that one and agree it was very good.
Colleen wrote: "There is a good bit of Native American culture and involvement in Iron Lake which is one of the things that kept me interested even though the "personal struggles" were crazy and I wanted to slap some sense into several characters. "My reaction exactly. I liked the setting and the story line but the personal disasters and angst are wearing! Like you, wanted to slap some sense into them.
What is it with authors now? Difficult to find any sane, sensible, non-addicted to something characters with sensible personal lives in books anymore. Seems like authors are competing to produce the most conflicted/addicted personalities they possibly can.
I can't tell you how many potentially good series I have dropped because of this trend.
I have just finished Murder on the Eiffel Tower by Claude Izner, now I am reading The Cipher Garden by Martin Edwards.
I am a huge Elizabeth George fan and just downloaded her new release Believing The Lie on my kindle. I am so happy!
Keri wrote: "Steven Booth's are English procedurals with Ben Cooper and Dianne Fry as the characters. Love Ben, but Diana can be a PITA and I think Booth writes her that way to counteract Ben's sweetness. Black..."The Cooper/Fry series is excellent. Have read all the books published in the U.S. but the newer ones are not available here. Booth told me he has been working on it but no luck as of yet.
Just finished Agent 6. Excellent conclusion to the Leo trilogy, gave it 5 stars. Just started The Soul Collectors.
Gatorman wrote: "Just finished Agent 6. Excellent conclusion to the Leo trilogy, gave it 5 stars. Just started The Soul Collectors."Am really looking forward to reading this series!
Keri wrote: "Steven Booth's are English procedurals with Ben Cooper and Dianne Fry as the characters. Love Ben, but Diana can be a PITA and I think Booth writes her that way to counteract Ben's sweetness. Black..."thanks will check it out
Gatorman, I hate that in this digital age that anybody is stopped from reading whatever they want...whereever they are.

Just finished an eBook review copy of Canadian author R.L Prendergast's next novel
I just finished
. Again another wonderful book in this series. I loved it. During some of the action packed scenes I visualized myself as Nikki running and trying to figure a way out of those situations. The ending, well, that was just plain sad.
Keri wrote: "Gatorman, I hate that in this digital age that anybody is stopped from reading whatever they want...whereever they are."I couldn't agree more, but with the issue always being publishing rights, you end up having to wait until authors can make separate deals with publishers in different countries before the book becomes available to you, either in paper form or as an e-book.

It's definitely worth it!
I am reading Cut Short - Leigh Russell on Kindle and Stone Rain - Linwood Barclay in paperback. Also finished The Trophy Taker - Lee Weeks.
Lynn wrote: "I think it was selected for cinematic value maybe....what I can believe is Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher! No way!"I agree. I certainly won't be spending my hard earned cash going to see this one. I think Christopher Meloni from Law & Order SVU would have been a good choice for Reacher. I would have put Tom Cruise at the bottom of my 'who could play Reacher' list with Danny Devito!

Ah, i like that: Christopher Meloni as Jack Reacher. I just read Child's contribution to A Study in Sherlock. One piece in a great collection.
Have just started The Whisperers by John Connolly I always look forward to Charlie Parker thriller even though they are usually very dark and a bit weird!
Johnette wrote: "I am a huge Elizabeth George fan and just downloaded her new release Believing The Lie on my kindle. I am so happy!"I've read all of George's books and am looking forward to reading this-- will be looking forward to reading the reviews... Hope she continues getting back to her earlier style...
Sharon, I completely agree. Sometimes the characters are handled well and their troubles make it interesting, but a lot of the time I just get sick of it. Elizabeth George is a great example of taking it way too far. I swear if any one of her characters was normal or even just once had a normal reaction to a situation instead of having a reality show style meltdown at every little thing I might have kept reading her books. The murder mystery she writes is great, but the overly complex lives of her overly complex characters killed it for me. (I'm not dissing the George lovers, I just thought of it because you guys mentioned her, I respect that not everyone loves the books I love for the reasons I love them)
Really enjoying Booth's Blind to the Bones. Up next I have Tami Hoag's Down the Darkest Road, any TH fans here? Especially this series?

"I've often wondered if the fact that I worked for 10 years at a psychiatric hospital has something to do with my intolerance to major personal issues in the characters I read about. I've already heard it all ... many, many times ... in real life.
I have just started Whispers of the Dead by Simon Beckett. I have read the first two and thought they were excellent. Hope this one is just as good.
I'm listening to THE BRASS VERDICT by Michael Connelly. I don't love audio books, but had four hours of dental work, two hours yesterday, two today ... needed SOMETHING to listen to, and it was only $5.95 on iBooks audio.
My latest read was intriguing.Death Comes To Pemberley Instead of contemporary England, P.D. James has set her latest book at Pemberley estate in 1803, six years after Miss Elizabeth Bennet has married Darcy. That is, P.D. James takes the prose of Jane Austen as her setting. James plus Austen is a fascinating combination, although there are some difficulties in the marriage. Here's my review.
Working my way through the Michael Connelly books. Just finished The Narrows and just started The Closers
Judith, thank you for your review. I have a copy of this on my pile to be read. I have seen some dreadful reviews but I had decided I would read the book anyway. I love P.D. James and Jane Austen and I am now looking forward to this.
Keri wrote: "Really enjoying Booth's Blind to the Bones. Up next I have Tami Hoag's Down the Darkest Road, any TH fans here? I love Tami Hoag, but stopped reading after the horse book. I have these two books, I need to move them up on my reading list.

I've just finished Diary of a Small Fish and and I'm starting The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest and Field of Blood
Just finished Dissolution and loved it. I got the rec right here in this forum and very happy I followed up. Hard to do better in a historical mystery novel.
Rob wrote: "Working my way through the Michael Connelly books. Just finished The Narrows and just started The Closers"I hope you are enjoying his novels. Harry Bosch is a great character.
Colette, I can't read this series fast enough. Allison, I would for sure move the Oak Knoll series up in the TBR. If you get a chance, go check out my review on GRs for
. TH really does a awesome job with it. If you have/had a crush on Tom Selleck, you are going to love Vince Leone.
Benjamin wrote: "Just finished Dissolution and loved it. I got the rec right here in this forum and very happy I followed up. Hard to do better in a historical mystery novel."Hi Benjamin,
Glad you liked Dissolution, the Matthew Shardlake series is one of my absolute favourites!!!

I've been looking for the next good mystery to read, so this looks like it might be it :)
Just finished Home for a Spell
-- probably my favorite in this series so far, and now I'm completely current in that series. Next up is Murder by Mocha
and then I'll be completely caught up on that series as well.
Just started Stephen Hunter's latest, Soft Target, which looks to be the first in a series featuring Ray Cruz, one of the heroes from Dead Zero, a Bob Lee Swagger novel. It's a page turner, I'm sure I will be finished by tomorrow!
Heidi wrote: "Kim-- Dont laugh, but out of respect for one of my favorite mystery writers, i had to give it two stars ('cuz GR doesnt yet offer those much requested halfstars)......"
I understand, Heidi. I considered two stars for the exact same reason, but I couldn't quite push it over the line! In my review I suggested that it might deserve 1.5 stars for “good grammar, well-constructed sentences and no obvious typos”.
Going to leave Stone Rain - Linwood Barclay and Cut Short - Leigh Russell til later. I am deciding to read Six Cats In My Kitchen - Lyn Horner.
