I just finished listening to by and Anne Perry, it was an ok book. I'm going to start listening to by William Kent Krueger, not sure about it. First time reading this author.

I recently listened to by William Kent Krueger. It was the first in the series (I think Boundry Waters is second or 3rd), it was a pretty good story but the main character's personal life muddied the waters of the plot quite a bit. I think how far I go with the series will depend a lot on how the main character and his wife's relationship is handled going forward. There is a good bit of Native American culture and involvement in Iron Lake which is one of the things that kept me interested even though the "personal struggles" were crazy and I wanted to slap some sense into several characters.

A newspaper columnist up here wrote a piece pleading for Cruise to not be let near it about a month ago. He suggests Daniel Craig would be better suited.

Reading a Y.A. book Envy . Gregg Olsen is a local author and does lots of true crime. This is mysterious, heartbreaking, certainly have never read anything like it. Through my tears I know it is important to read this book. Thanks Gregg for putting this down on paper.

I finished Roseanna by Maj Sjöwall. This is the first book in the Martin Beck series. I enjoyed it but found it very slow moving (it's essentially a cozy-ish book). I think I've been spoiled by modern thrillers/mysteries that have lots of action.

My reaction exactly. I liked the setting and the story line but the personal disasters and angst are wearing! Like you, wanted to slap some sense into them.

What is it with authors now? Difficult to find any sane, sensible, non-addicted to something characters with sensible personal lives in books anymore. Seems like authors are competing to produce the most conflicted/addicted personalities they possibly can.

I can't tell you how many potentially good series I have dropped because of this trend.

The Cooper/Fry series is excellent. Have read all the books published in the U.S. but the newer ones are not available here. Booth told me he has been working on it but no luck as of yet.

I just finished . Again another wonderful book in this series. I loved it. During some of the action packed scenes I visualized myself as Nikki running and trying to figure a way out of those situations. The ending, well, that was just plain sad.

I couldn't agree more, but with the issue always being publishing rights, you end up having to wait until authors can make separate deals with publishers in different countries before the book becomes available to you, either in paper form or as an e-book.

I agree. I certainly won't be spending my hard earned cash going to see this one. I think Christopher Meloni from Law & Order SVU would have been a good choice for Reacher. I would have put Tom Cruise at the bottom of my 'who could play Reacher' list with Danny Devito!

Sharon, I completely agree. Sometimes the characters are handled well and their troubles make it interesting, but a lot of the time I just get sick of it. Elizabeth George is a great example of taking it way too far. I swear if any one of her characters was normal or even just once had a normal reaction to a situation instead of having a reality show style meltdown at every little thing I might have kept reading her books. The murder mystery she writes is great, but the overly complex lives of her overly complex characters killed it for me. (I'm not dissing the George lovers, I just thought of it because you guys mentioned her, I respect that not everyone loves the books I love for the reasons I love them)

I've often wondered if the fact that I worked for 10 years at a psychiatric hospital has something to do with my intolerance to major personal issues in the characters I read about. I've already heard it all ... many, many times ... in real life.

I'm listening to THE BRASS VERDICT by Michael Connelly. I don't love audio books, but had four hours of dental work, two hours yesterday, two today ... needed SOMETHING to listen to, and it was only $5.95 on iBooks audio.

My latest read was intriguing.Death Comes To Pemberley Instead of contemporary England, P.D. James has set her latest book at Pemberley estate in 1803, six years after Miss Elizabeth Bennet has married Darcy. That is, P.D. James takes the prose of Jane Austen as her setting. James plus Austen is a fascinating combination, although there are some difficulties in the marriage. Here's my review.

I understand, Heidi. I considered two stars for the exact same reason, but I couldn't quite push it over the line! In my review I suggested that it might deserve 1.5 stars for “good grammar, well-constructed sentences and no obvious typos”.
