I know that some writers - no matter her race, can write a story about same race couple or interracial couple.

I can do both and I have done both. But, I like writing interracial stories and that's what I mostly write.

For those of you that writes interracial stories. I have a question for you.

Why do you write interracial stories?

I don't like narrow worlds. For everyone and everything to be the same is really boring to me. So writing IR fiction is natural to me. I have a few stories that are BW/BM, and that's what felt right for them. But in general, I tend to lean towards writing stories with characters who are multi-racial or multi-ethnic, or cross-ethnic romances.

Same here. I have a few stories with monoracial couples as well but I really enjoy writing IR because I love seeing people from different cultures and backgrounds finding love and happiness through it all. Even though society may not agree, it doesn't matter because they care so much for each other. Plus, on a more shallow level, I think it's sexy to see the couples together. :-)

To me, with my writing experience, interracial stories are more fun to write.

I love to see how opposite attract. Of course, the race isn't an issue in my story, but I can't ignore that these people are from different races.

I love to see their attraction. Their fighting to not fall in love with one another. Well, most of the time, it's the hero not wanting to fall in love with the heroine.

Oh my! I just love writing! :)

Definitely agree, Arch. Romance is one of the most rewarding genres to read and write, just for that reason. We know going in that it's going to be HEA, but the fun is seeing how that happens.

Davina D. | 796 comments My admiration for my black female friends inspired me to write stories in which black women are not pigeon-holed into the one group of black women the mainstream has decided represents all black women.

I also wanted to read more stories in which race wasn't a theme. Since I wasn't getting that from many of the IR stories I read, I figured I might as well write my own.

Currently, I write ww/wm and wm/bw stories, but I've written a number of bm/ww stories in the past. At the moment, though, I'm mostly moved to write wm/bw.

Arch, I'm not intentionally witholding my work, esp when considering that you all have been so generous in sharing yours.

It's just that I don't have the time to participate in the challenges. In fact, I don't think I'm able to do challenges. I like writing what moves me and some times the challenges don't spark a big enough interest for me to put in the effort. I like spinning up the circumstances of my own stories.

I do have some finished works, but those are the ones that I'm using to try and get an agent so it's inadvisable to make them public. But I will share something soon. Promise. If only a short story or something like that.

I have always like reading other people work.

I'm a reader. I love reading.

If you are lead to share a short story, do so.

Our challenges are for people that wants to participate in a challenge. A person can also just write a non-challenge story and share it, if they want to.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) I write them because I am attracted to white men and have always loved watching BW/WM relationships and love stories on movies and shows so naturally I enjoy writing them. I also think it's a duty of mine. I feel that being a fan of IR myself, then I should write about it and maybe through writing bring more of an awarenss of how beautiful these types of relationships can be.

I also want to write them for fans of these books. It's so many people who love IR books but for years couldn't find many. That's one of the things I love about ebooks, they opened the door to endless IR stories and made the opportunities easier for writers of IR fiction. Some don't understand that it still is very hard to get an IR romance published by a big publisher. Not saying it can't happened (it happened for my last book), but it does not happen often. I also believe that most IR authors have to use other methods (such as ebooks) to reach the biggest amount of audiences. Big pubs don't know how to market IR books it seems. I know that now, more IR writers are happier that there are different ways to get their work out. It used to be most of them had to self-publish but now small presses and epresses are open to these books. This is one of many reasons I have decided to embark on the epublishing route the next time around myself. I feel I can reach more readers going right where they are you know? Also, epublishers are more dedicated to IR fiction and knows how to market these books. I don't believe the big boys do because IR is a niche and they don't know how to market to niche audiences.

I know some people don't like ebooks, but from a writer's standpoint they are a blessing. There are a lot of talented writers who write for ebook companies that couldn't get published because of the genres they wrote or because they wanted to have the freedom to write what they loved and not being told what to write by big pubs. I think anyway a writer can get their work out and it becomes a good opportuinity for them is wonderful. As long as the writer is satisfied and happy I say they gotta do what's right for them. I see more and more IR writers emerging. I think it's only going to grow.

Let's also not forget that IR is just fun to write, LOL!

Best Wishes!

Alexis-Morgan Roark (alexismroark) | 22 comments Because it's what I live, daily. Also, it's still slightly "forbidden" and makes for a delicious seductive backdrop. Learning about each other's bodies takes on a whole new level of eroticism when what was once "dusted pink" becomes "mocha" or "sienna" and is still as soft and sweet.

Or for the woman...you discover the rumors of penis size are not entirely true afterall. :-)

Just my two cents.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) I wish more good interracial stories come out in print.

Unfortunately Arch, this is the main problem and you will be waiting forever if you want print pubs to dedicate time to publishing IR. That's just the truth. Unless it's smaller pressses, the print pubs never were that interested in IR books because they still think it's "taboo" and still under the impression that they don't sell enough for them to risk publishing. This of course is not true, but this goes back to how it is in publishing. Publishers skip over on good books all the time. The writing is the least of it. A book can be wonderful and still can't get published. Bottom line, if you write anything "outside the box" these days, your chance of getting published (especially if you are new), is less than it had been even years ago. It's always been hard to get published by big houses but it's even harder these days if you write something that's not cookie cutter or something that doesn't attract the MAINSTREAM audience. IR readers and fans, well we are not considered mainstream and never will be. So big pubs could care less about publishing "different" things. They like to keep it safe and publish things they feel they know will sell. Of course, they are often wrong about that.

If a small print press focuses on IR then that's where you can buy print books from. Have you tried Genesis Press or Parker? These are the only two PRINT houses I know that publish strictly IR. I also heard that Genesis is now focusing on ebooks mostly now though because their ebooks outsell their paperbacks by far. They might end up becoming an epublisher down the line. Who knows? I don't know if you know of these places but if you'd rather read IR books in print, these two pubs are a good selection. Others might know more.

I'm just glad there's so many, many IR books to choose from these days if you read ebooks. But don't expect big publishers or many print presses to change their minds and start publishing a lot of IR. It won't happen because they only publish certain things.

Even the black publishers don't want IR books! I find that even more disheartening. They are just like the big pubs, they only want to publish the same thing. In fact, the black pubs' attitudes towards IR books borderline on racism and they just want what they consider "black" books. They don't want IR books and you'd think black pubs would give them a chance. They feel it takes away from their "black" romances. Please.

No one wanted to publish IR books so that's why small presses and epubs emerged.

Maybe someone knows more print pubs that publish IR than the two I named, but I don't know of any. There was another small print press that did but they closed.

I used to hate the idea of ebooks too, until I read one. Now I love them, LOL.

Best Wishes!

Well, thank goodness I am a writer and I write for myself.

I would love to read other good interracial stories that falls in the line of books that I read, but since a lot will not come out in print. I will not get a chance. Maybe one day.

message 22: by Stacy-Deanne (new)

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) You can look through the epubs that publish IR and see if the books you might be interested in come out in paperback. A lot of epubs release their books in paperback. You can also read blogs and check sites of IR book writers and see where their books are published and if they are in print. A lot of IR authors self-publish so you can look some up on Amazon if you want to try to find paperbacks there.

I usually look up Wishlists and most of the IR print books on there come from Genesis so you can always order print from them.

Best Wishes!

JC (ainathiel) I never thought of my stories as being IR. I write stories where my heroine is black because it how I see her; she varies in degrees of complexion. My hero sometimes have blond hair, blue green or gray eyes. The features aren't important, his role in the story is.

For example, I am working on an urban fantasy, where the hero is blond, blue eyes with a tan, he is also a werewolf. That is us vs.them factor. I never think when I am writing this is going to be a bw/ww or other race match up. I develop the character and they tell me who they are.

P.S. I hope that didn't sound crazy.

No Jo, it doesn't sound crazy. To you, although you have a black heroine and white hero, you don't see them as an interracial couple. Just two people being together, right?

That makes sense to me. For myself, I like to see the contrast b/c I think love crosses color/ethnic boundaries. But my stories don't hype the racial differences as societal barriers. It's more of an understanding that there are different races, but that's not the issue at all.

I like people to know that my couple is an interracial couple, but also that they are people. So, the color isn't an issue in my stories. My characters are written as a hero and heroine.

I love IR books that acknowledge the different races and cultures but handle it in a realistic (not over the top) way. And like Arch says they are just people. Basically with different experiences but history and society isn't ignored as well.

Jo, we have writing challenges on here. If you like, I want to invite you to write a story. Our new theme is hero and/or heorine in uniform. Post the story under the writing folder.

I don't know what kind of stories you write, but for example, if your story is an erotic story, please make that known in your story title. If it's not an erotic story and have certain things in it, such as detailed sex, violence, etc. In that chapter, state a warning.

Example:

Chapter Five
Warning: Violence

I haven't started my next uniform story yet, but will sometime this year.

Nicole | 5 comments Hi. I'm an author and I write for Red Rose as well as Loose-Id. I'd like to tell readers that ALL Red Rose books come out in print, if that's your preference. I like the fact that the readers can choose either way :)

My heroes and heroines are non-conventional and bold (a little like me). I love writing IR romances because they show that two people who have different skin hues can fall in love and have everlasting relationships just like people who look more alike. I also find IR couples hot and a little bit forbidden. I have an interracial family (you name it, we have it!) and we all live together and love together in peace, and I like to show other people that it can be done. My stories are my way of doing so.

My current book "Touch Me in the Morning" is with Red Rose. Both the hero and the heroine are emotionally scarred for different reasons, but they help one another heal (not that the road to love is an easy one at all!)

I just found this site and I love it!

Raven Knight :)

It's a natural outgrowth of the characters histories, and provides a forum for the protagonist (a highly educated and successful black female) to give some observations about the relationship sans the racial issues, which only come up between them once. She only thinks about it when she considers how her parents will feel, despite the fact that the man is immensely wealthy.
