Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Just thought I'd ad a conversation topic of some sort about what you're doing with yourself lately...

Right now I'm studying for a practical test on wednesday, much fun...

message 2: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) Hey
I'm madi
and i am currently preparing for a speech about the "Gothic presence" in literature. which is super fun..
oh and I've already read the book thief
and I am very happy to have finally found someone who likes the moth diaries as much as me.

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments I've been trying to finish a coloring project. I'm such a slacker on this thing. It's a drawing an artist on DeviantArt.com did and she wanted to see how many different ways people would color it in. I sometimes need someone to light a firecracker under my butt :o)

message 4: by Liz (last edited Mar 30, 2010 01:37AM) (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) This practical test study is going terribly!

It's right before semester break so my focus is really dwindling... If this test were last week I would have been all super focus and attentive study!

Or perhapsio if I have discovered this site last week rather than a couple of days ago, it would cease to be a curiosity/distraction.

message 5: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) This site is curiously addictive. what subject are you studying for?

message 6: by Liz (last edited Mar 30, 2010 03:32AM) (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Yes. Yes it is.

This is for my zoology major. I'm still doing second year units because I was doing both psychology and zoology majors - which is fine for first year when both only have two units for each semester but I had to stop one to finish the other.

So now I'm done with psychology and on to finishing zoology!

I don't mind though - I love uni!

Katieb | 17 comments I introduced myself over in the "Welcome" section, but I guess we can talk more here?

I am 24 years old and live in California. I graduated from University about 3 years ago, and now I work a boring office job, and hopefully talking about books will help the day pass.. hahaha

Are you all students?

message 8: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) Yeah, I'm a student at the moment, I am just beginning year 11, so quite a bit younger then the rest of you.
Zoology and psychology wow. They are both awesome subjects.

message 9: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Test done! My easter break begins!

message 10: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) The Easter holidays have begun :D

message 11: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments what's with Easter being all advertised like Christmas now? Easter baskets with a Nintendo DS in them ? Wow, what happened to some chocolate and jelly beans or even some peeps. How about a basket with a book in it huh :o)

message 12: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) I can't wait for easter tomorrow im getting a new book instead of chocolate :D

message 13: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I didn't expect any eggs this year, then I went to my boyfriends house and his mum had gotten me some!

But let it be known: chocolate + whiskey + pizza = big tummy ache.

message 14: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments maybe you just need to pace yourself Liz cause all those things sound very yummy :o)

message 15: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments i agree with steven. that sounds like heaven to me! :)

message 16: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments Oh hey Liz, I got me some chocolate bunnies here and now I just need to hit the liquor store :o)

message 17: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Mo's pokemon has the pokemon virus! Woah.

message 18: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Sorry, had a little nerd moment there. My whole life is a nerd moment...

What is everyone reading right now? Or what good books have you read recently?

message 19: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments I just finished reading The Hunger Games and Catching Fire (both in the same series) by Suzanne Collins. It's a young adult series about a dystopian society in the future. I strongly recommend them if anyone hasn't read them yet! I am even thinking of re-reading them soon (haha that's how I am, I get obsessed and keep re-reading books, especially young adult easy reads). THe third book is coming out in August!

message 20: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I really want to read those books! I'm glad to hear someone else's opinion.

message 21: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Anyone else freaking out about a test tomorrow? Just me? Alright then. Shh! I'm studying!

message 22: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments I wish I was still in school! :( working in the real world just isn't as exciting. hahaha

message 23: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) Yeah i'm in high school at the moment and it's hard to appreciate haha, half yearlies next week :S

message 24: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I hated early highschool but I loved year ten to twelve (other than exams).

message 25: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments well yeah I guess I should say I hated school except for college (not the actual studying part, just the living away from the parents while they still supported me financially, and just having a blast with my friends) hehehe.... ;)

message 26: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I absolutely love uni! I hate exams though.

message 27: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Yesterday I bought The Graveyard Book, The Adoration of Jenna Fox and The Hunger Games - which should I read first?

Speaking of new books - don't you hate it when you don't get the cover you want?

message 28: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) The adoration of jenna fox, it's realy good and a quick read.

yes cover changes grr
especialy when a movie comes out

message 29: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Thanks! (That was the one I secretly wanted to read first)

message 30: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Well I finished the Jenna Fox book - it was pretty good, it made me think about what makes someone who they are.

I was worried at the beginning that it was going to be really anti-science and such and the middle of the book really seemed to take that tone, but it was mostly to make you think about the whole subject.

Overall it was pretty interesting.

message 31: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments hmm i might have to pick that book up! sounds interesting!

message 32: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Does anyone know if this is a good place to buy books?
http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/

message 33: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Coolio thanks!

message 34: by Liz (last edited May 15, 2010 08:46PM) (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Doing only one unit this semester has made me ridiculously lazy.

Now whenever I have to do something other than lectures I spend half the time procrastinating or desperately looking for people to talk to!

I don't know if any of you go to imdb.com but I have spent waaay too much time on the message boards there, arguing for the sake of arguing. It is very sad.

message 35: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) So... I haven't read 1984 yet but I'm going to get it from the uni library tomorrow so I'll probably have read it by Monday. Is anyone finished/still reading it?

message 36: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) i'm finishing it off this weekend. :D

message 37: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments I'm in the middle of a book called The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull and it is a lot of fun. Definitely a hard to put down title and almost want to call into work sick so I can stay home and finish it read.
Also, been watching an anime series called Princess Ressurection which isn't to bad. It's a subtitles thing but easy to follow and is pretty entertaining.

message 38: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I love anime! (Well some)

I most recently watched death note - the first half was very good while it fizzled out at the end I thought.

message 39: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments If you really want to see a pretty cool anime, check out Vampire Hunter D but look for the newer animation DVD. It's got a black cover with a symbol in blood on it. It's like a animated version of one of those old Hammer Horror films with Christopher Lee & Peter Cushing...way cool stuff. I finished the second disk of Princess Resurrection yesterday and it does get better as it goes on. I am actually looking forward to seeing the next disk when Netflix sends it.

Also if this group wants to read a kick butt book that will soon be the talk of talks this summer, read The Passage by Justin Cronin. Here's a review by Stephen King you should read and he is dead on with his review:
Here is what STEPHEN KING has to say about THE PASSAGE:

"Every so often a novel-reader's novel comes along: an enthralling, entertaining story wedded to simple, supple prose, both informed by tremendous imagination. Summer is the perfect time for such books, and this year readers can enjoy the gift of Justin Cronin¹s THE PASSAGE. Read fifteen pages and you will find yourself captivated; read thirty and you will find yourself taken prisoner and reading late into the night. It has the vividness that only epic works of fantasy and imagination can achieve. What else can I say? This: read this book and the ordinary world disappears."

message 40: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments well that's good cause it's so worht the money and time. You will be highly entertained...just a warning your eyes might become blood shot from lack of sleep :o)

message 41: by Liz (last edited May 24, 2010 05:18AM) (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I'll add the passage to the next book vote - is there anything else anyone wants on there? I'm thinking of these five:
The Passage (is this the right one?)
Uglies
Among the Hidden
Poison Study
The Knife of Never Letting Go

message 42: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments The Passage is the name of the book, and I think that looks like a pretty good selection of titles to vote through.

message 43: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Hey Katie - if you liked the graveyard book then I recommend Beyond the Deepwoods - it's also a kids book and has that great adventure per chapter style (which is pretty much why I love good kids books).

It was good fun and I really wish I had read it when I was a kid so things would have taken me more by surprise. It's got that kind of kid on an adventure where they get into situations where they pick up things and it comes in handy later for some other situation (I love that formula!), if you know what I mean...

message 44: by Liz (last edited Jun 01, 2010 07:01AM) (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Well I'm bored once again - it's the end of semester right before exams so I have lots of study/procrastination time.

What's everyone else up to?

Also, out of curiosity, what are your thoughts on the harry potter series? Anyone hate it? I love it! The fourth book is my favourite, the fifth is my least favourite...

message 45: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments haha Harry Potter is my favorite! I feel really cliche saying that, but it's definitely one of my favorite series, along with His Dark Materials. I've read the books numerous times, and could definitely read them over and over and over and over...

message 46: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) My boyfriend and his mum don't like the series! Blasphemy!

message 47: by Madi (new)

Madi (madi_isnt) I love the harry potter books, they will always be my all time favourite series of books. Although my least favourite would have to be the chamber of secrets and my most favourite the deathly hallows.

message 48: by Steven (new)

Steven (tbones) | 18 comments Has anyone here read the Rangers Apprentice books by John Flanagan yet? They are definitely another great series to check out. I am hunting down the next 3 books in the series now.

message 49: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Has the third hunger games book not been released yet?

message 50: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I just looked up the rangers apprentice books and they sound pretty good - I love fantasy novels.
