Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Just a place to talk about how you're liking the book after about halfway - characters you like/dislike, big events etc.

No Spoilers Please! (Past the middle I mean)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) What was meant by
had it been dark the tear would have been black
on page 108?
She then tells herself that it was dark and she goes on to say that her papa's music was dark but it comforted her that it was.

Has she just realised the truth about her mother? Or is it more about how she is realising the truth about what is happening around her? Or that she is bitter about these things? Or nothing like that at all?

Madi (madi_isnt) Is it just me or did anyone else decide to shut their eyes and try to see the colour of a moment, after reading deaths description of the colours associated with moments of death?
or am i just insane, either way

message 4: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I will now!

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I don't know how much I'm going to like nineteen eighty four.
I've been interested in it for a while but I've read Brave New World and there was just something about it I didn't like... I hope I like this one better.
I like Animal Farm so maybe George Orwell will paint a better picture of a scary future for me.

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Hey katie do you want to discuss the graveyard book here?

Did you get a hold of it? I just finished chapter three...

message 7: by Katie (new)

Katie (katiek11) | 5 comments Yes, sure! I still can't find it though. Not at the library nor the book store. I'm waiting for it to come from Amazon in the meantime. I'm a fast reader though--I'll catch up quickly :)

message 8: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Coolio - I haven't picked it up in a few days though so I'm still in the same place.

message 9: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments I haven't gotten very far in 1984 yet, but I am going on a road trip this weekend, and will be reading in the car! Hope to get a lot read. How far are you guys in the book?

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I haven't even started yet - I'm going to borrow it from the library in a few days after I finish the graveyard book.

message 11: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Well I FINALLY finished The Graveyard Book! I had to do some catch up with uni because I've been so slack.

message 12: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments I am also behind on my reading - I just decided to move this month, so I've been stressing about that.

message 13: by Katieb (new)

Katieb | 17 comments I never finished 1984... I think I'm going to give up on it.. hahaha Starting Hunger Games tonight!

message 14: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Wow really? I loved it! I am about to rant on the other board...

message 15: by Liz (new)

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Well I started the hunger games today and it seems interesting but I'm not very fond of the way it's written (though I got used to it after the third chapter).

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) I'm a third of a way through the hunger games now (I just finished the last chapter before part two - in case you're afraid of spoilers).

The writing is still bugging me - like the part where Peeta is saying they can go on the roof to talk but it's very windy, and she thinks to herself 'I translate that to no one will over-hear us' - I wish she would be just a LITTLE subtle when writing, I feel like she is overly explaining everything.

The story is interesting though. It reminds me a little of 1984 but only because of the differences in class and also because I only just finished that...
I don't really see why Katniss likes Cinni the stylist so much, he doesn't seem so great. I also think it would be interesting if she ended up with Peeta rather than Gale - or no one even (but that doesn't seem likely) - that would be pretty unexpected. Maybe it won't focus on that (it's not like it has so far).

Sorry to go on and on about nothing really - I'm just bored right now. Don't get me wrong though, I am enjoying the book, but I'm still having trouble getting past the writing (but that just means I have to read big chunks at a time).

Katieb | 17 comments I can kind of see what you mean about the writing now that you mention it. But I definitely LOVE the story. It's so messed up and gives me bad dreams! hehe Katniss kind of gets on my nerves a bit because she's not very aware of a lot of things... especially toward the beginning- she didn't seem even close to being as terrified as I would be in her situation. But I guess the kids in Panem must be used to it.

Liz (zucchiniesinbikinies) Part two is so so so much better! I seriously could not put the book down! The writing is much more effective when everything is fast paced! These kids are scary - is anyone else having flashbacks to lord of flies? (Granted I haven't read that book but I have seen the movie and it terrified me!).

I have to admit I was a little dissapointed when I read part one because I was really looking forward to this book and I guess my expectations were too high, but now it seems I won't be at all. Which I am very glad for! I can't wait to finish it!
