The Host would be a great read - I'm about half way and I love it. Stephenie is a very talented writer

I know you said you weren't looking for vampire books necessarily, and they're not focused on the love stories, but Amelia Atwater-Rhodes writes some short, easy to read vampire books. Her book Hawksong, has more romance in it, but it's about shapeshifters (also a great book though).
the owl and moon cafe by jo-ann mapson. it is not a fantasy book by any means. no vampires, no demons, etc. but it is a love story. not in the intense passion that twilight shows. it is about four generations of woman and their take on love. it is about lost love, lost and found love, new love, first love. i really like the book. it is a very simple read. i wish it was a little longer because i would love to know more about what happens with the characters. but it shows the courageous aspect of love. that i think so many authors fail to recognize. how hard it is to open your heart again when your heart has been broken before.
if you're looking for a bood of the more romanitic aspect then the whole vampire thing 'a great and terrible beauty' by libba bray is very good. not nearly as intense as edward and bella but just as-- idk-- pasionate? im not sure all i know is that i read 'a great and terrible beauty' after twilight and loved it!
A great and terrible beauty is fantastic! It doesn't have as much romance as Twilight, but much more well done (in my opinon) the writing is a million times better and is amazing! If your looking for good relationships (not just romantic ones) you should read it! You won't regret it!
I agree!! 'a great and terrible beauty' is much bettter in that aspect but i think that twilight was better overall....idk maybe it had more adventure or it could be the plot is a bit more exciting (2 me) or something....im not sure but yeah i agree with you.
lol I completely disagree with you about Twilight being better overall, but I won't fight, I'm just happy you like it! lol. Minorlibrarian, it's really a fantastic book, give it a try!
okay cool..i'll look it up. by the way i dont want to fight either cuz im glad u like it 2. anyway i just want to say, (before anything else) that the reason i think twilight is overall better because im still a little....idk..... upset about the ending to TSFT....yeah and i dont know then end of breaking dawn yet so there still hope!!! lol but yeah thnx for the book idea though!
Ahhh I see, well I loved the ending, despite it being so sad. It seemed very real and it fit the series, it gave the series justice, and it was extremely beautiful. But I understand why you were upset, I cried harder than I ever had in my entire life in those beautiful chapters. (Minorlibrarian, I hope this doesn't turn you off, because they are amazing books!)

I didn't like The Great and Terrible Beauty. It was okay, but I don't know how to say it. I guess it was just weird for me.
yeah i get that, it freaked me out a little bit too but then i was just kinda like, 'well what heppens to her now?' so i finished the trilogy and ended up liking it. but the movie is supposed to b killer! cant wait

I haven't read a lot of contemporary romances; however, I think EVERYONE should read Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte - both classics and great stories.
I completly agree with you Laura those books are amazing!! Miv: if your daughter loved the twilight books then try her out on the books we were talking about earlier "A Great and Terrible Beauty" by Libba Bray. It has just a touch of romance (similar to Twilight) yet has a lot of adventure plus its really just about how a girl matures so its a good experience all the way around. But that's just my reccommendation.

I personally am not sure about the Host becaues I haven't had time to read it yet. But yeah if your daughter is crazy about Stephenie Meyer then the Host would be a good alternative 2. But all of this depends on your daughters taste in books too.
Here's an 'adult' suggestion... Queen of Dragons. It's a love story with some of the mystery of being not human (dragons and mist/smoke). There is some sex that might be offensive to some -- possibly not appropriate for some.
I believe that Vampire diaries are awesome. I also believe blue bloods is awesome these are two great series that everyone should read.
the sister hood of the traveling pants is a good read. It has nothing to do with the romance or vampires but it is a really good book!!!!!!!!!!
The Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs.....more adult, less flat out mushy, but still some pretty good love interests, mystery, and kick butt.
Just Listen is fantastic.
Do you like vampires alot? If so read books by Maggie Shayne (Like Demon's Kiss) Lyndsay Sands, (Like Vampire Interrupted) and the greek god and goddess books of Sherrilyn Kenyon(Like Upon a Midnight Clear, or Dream Chasers)

For those who read this - my ten year old daughter wants to read it, but I think she's too young, although she's a very competent reader (read Harry Potter latest in a weekend). What do you think? Is subject matter appropriate for her age?
My 10 year old reads Harry Potter as well; however, I'm holding off on her reading it for right now. The main focus of the story is the intense relationship between Edward and Bella (who is 17 in Twilight) and that's just not something I think she's ready for. If she liked HP have her read the Fablehaven series. My daughter is just finishing those and LOVES them. Also Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordian is great too. Good luck!
Also, if you are interested in the "sort-of" vampire books, I would recommend "Peeps" by Scott Westerfeld. I enjoyed that book and others by Westerfeld.
oh yes, i really enjoyed Just Listen. It was one of those "normal" books that you sometimes just don't see very often anymore.
I couldn't get into the Host at first; due to intermind actions. Once other charactors were added, the book became intense. It tended to remind me a lot of the prior series. Overall, a good 'filler' book.
I know several fifth grade girls who read it and loved it. I'm a bit uncomfortable with them reading it.....there was a review I read somewhere (magazine)that said although nothing physical happens the book is absolutely filthy. Ha, sexual tension....that's what bothers me about handing this to a grade school kid. They might read right over the top, but there are enough other good things to read out there that I'd put this on the back burner (like Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants). I'd just a soon kids don't worry about sex in elementary school.I agree with the Percy Jackson series, they are great!

Actually I think we "focus" on the sexual tension because, as parents that's the part of the story we think our kids need to be most ready for. My book club had a HUGE discussion about this when we read the books - most of us are married and moms but we had a couple of teen/young adult daughters there as well, and it was interesting to see the difference in their perspective about this as opposed to ours.
Back to the what to read part - has anyone read Sunshine by Robin McKinley? It's on my list of books to get but thought I'd see if anyone here has read it before I decide to buy or borrow :-)
Ouch and gut roll. I get to talk to kids AND their parents about books and book choices, so I do tend to read YA and children's lit. with an eye toward what will and what won't be acceptable for all involved. Now go read The Dark is Rising Sequence, absolutely brilliant...even without sexual tension, ha!
The Blue Girl by Charles de Lint Actually pretty much everything by him is good stuff (Native American and Welsh mythology blended into urban fantasy).
Laura: I never thought about it like that. So then, i have a question for you. At what age do u think is appropriate for (teenagers in general) to read the twilight series? or does it depend on how mature the person is?
The Cirque du Freak series by Darren Shan is an excellent vampire series (although it gets a bit far out in the last book). It's probably the series that got me interested in reading about vampires in the first place.
Ruby - I think it DOES depend on the teenager but I also tend to go closer to the protagonist's age - that said for Twilight my daughters probably won't read it until 14/15 (8th/9th gradeish). (My then-9-year-old read the first Percy Jackson and the 5th HP and I think she more related to Percy since he was 12 or 13, closer to her age...)Lisa - who did The Dark is Rising?

Laura - Susan Cooper. It's an oldy but a goodie...five books in the series. The first two (Dark is Rising and Over Sea Under Stone) have sets of characters that come together in the third book, so you can read either one first.
If anyone here hasn't read a series called 'the Bartimeus Trilogy' then you should. It's riveting. I also really enjoyed the Artimus Fowl series.

Why do you think Twilight isn't appropriate for grade school kids? I read it in the very very beginning of sixth grade, when I was still 11, and I thought it was fine. I have also read, Vampire Interrupted, Demon's Kiss, Underworld Revolution, Dream Chasers, Upon The Midnight Clear, and I watch Family Guy, Futurama, The Simpsons, and South Park. Every single one of those is much worse than Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse, and I still read or watch them. By the way, I recommend all those books and tv shows. They are all absolutely Rockin!
well, it partially depends on what type of enviroment you are brought up in. I personally don't watch T.V. at all b/c i think it's a waste of time, this set of mind was probably brought on by the fact that for the first 12 yrs of my life i didn't have T.V. b/c a storm blew the thing that makes it so you can watch T.V. off my roof and my dad didn't replace it. Also i don't read sensual books(i personally decided Twilight was o.k. for me to read since i'm mature enough but no matter how old or mature i get i'm never going to read books that are way graphically sensual), or books with tons of profanity, ect. ect. because of the way i was brought up and also heavily because of my religion. o.k., that's a little off topic, but the point is I grew up being sheltered from many things that other kids might not have been, so even though I think Twilight is fine, other more graphic things would probably bring me to tears or make me feel sick. eventually it all boils down to the individual. i think that you should at least be 13 when you read this book, but it depends on individuals maturaty levels as well. like i said, eventually it all boils down to the individual.
getting back on the topic of what to read while you're waiting for the next book to come out... There's this series called "The Chronicles of Chrestomanci" by Dianne Wynne Jones, that I found immensely entertaining.
someone mentioned the uglies series. ive read uglies, pretties and specials and have extras on my to read list. these are fast paced and engrossing.its what im telling my daughter to read now that shes finished the three twilights...instead shes reading them again.
