Joy (joyousnorth) I think Zola for the next read would be great! I have Germinal listed for my 2010 Victorian Challenge, so I could kill two birds with one stone :)

Oh no. May need to find someone to lead that. I started it for the Western Canon group and only read book 1 of 2.

On the other hand... finally finished Tess because of the group read, so that might be the motivation I need to finish it!

Andrea | 83 comments Yes, the notes for Les Mise are still available at the Western Canon group. I enjoyed it once around, but as I get older and realize how much is out there that I've never read once, I reread less and less. Les Mise was most likely a one time deal for me.

In my case, the more I try to read modern fiction the more I go back to re-reading the classics. But only some of them. I enjoyed the discussion in the Western Canon group, and as somebody noted the topics will remain available there in case anybody wants to review them, but I agree that I almost certainly won't re-read Les Mis again. It was fine to read once. But not twice.

I've finished Bummel, and I'm posting a good review (4 stars). I think I'll get more out of it on a second reading- I was a bit too conscious of the period (Fall of Eagles!) to read it without expectations, and that may have cost it a star. (What's the ettiquette? Should I say more about the review here?)

Hi, John. It seems you’ve stumbled upon an archived nomination thread that was drill open for comments. We usually use archived threads more as a resource of ideas. Our next nomination thread will probably be for Winter 2026.
