Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments I kind of liked the Underworld movies. Not my favorite movies or anything, but not too bad. The first Blade movie was okay, but the sequels were terrible.

I am generally opposed to sequels though, unless a sequel or trilogy was intended from the beginning. But, when they crap out a sequel because the first movie did well, and they're just trying to cash in on the popularity... I seriously despise that. They're always terrible movies. But, I digress...

I actually liked Interview With A Vampire, it followed the story fairly closely, other than a few questionable casting choices. Surprisingly, I'm not refering to Tom Cruise. He was pretty good. Queen of the Damned, on the other hand, was a disaster. Most Dracula movies have been awful.

message 2: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) I watched the first Underworld movie and quite enjoyed it, though I didn't get the attraction between them - it rang false and a bit lame.

I've watched Interview with the Vampire and Queen of the Damned - Jennifer, are you referring to Brad Pitt? Cause to me he always seemed an odd choice. Looked nice, but didn't seem to fit the time period he was supposed to be from. Loved Antonio Banderas in it though! And, was it Stuart Townsend in Queen? He had charisma!

Saw at least one Blade movie but I can't remember it all that much. Wesley Snipes is so ... beefed up!

Loved Bram Stoker's Dracula, though I can't stand Winona Ryder and Keanu was simply bizarre.

But there must be urban fantasy movies that aren't about vampires, surely?! Why can't I think of any at the moment?

message 3: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (shannoncb) Someone else mentioned Blood and Chocolate to me, but I'm not sure what it's about. And who wrote the book?

message 4: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Interview was good, I've only seen bits and pieces of Queen of the Damned. Loved the first and third Blade movies, not so much with the second.

Almost all urban fantasy movies do seem to surround vampires, though. There was the TV series (short-lived) of the Dresden files, and while it wasn't great, it wasn't bad, either. I liked the guy playing Dresden, and Bob was done well. They screwed up Murphy and Susan, though, big time.

message 5: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments Stuart Townsend is smokin' hot, but the movie was terrible. I was actually referring to Antonio Banderas. Not that he was bad, or isn't a good actor. But having read the books, he's all wrong to play Armand. Armand was barely more than a boy when Marius turned him. He's supposed to be about 15 (physical age) and have short auburn hair. Antonio wasn't bad, just was soooo not what I was expecting, and not how the character was written. Brad was decent, but lacking in the french-creole accent department. He was a little stiff too.

I haven't seen Dracula 2000, even though I love Gerard Butler. It looks pretty bad.

Bram Stoker's Dracula actually follows the book more closely than any other adaptation I have seen.

Anyway, this is just my opinion.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) its weird I love paranormal books but I can't stand to watch vampire/werewolf movies. I saw one Blade and was so turned off( maybe it had something to due with Wesley) that I never watched another, But I do love paranormal TV. In highschool I was a big Angel/ Buffy/Charmed fan. I love Supernatural and Reaper. I don't really watch moonlight only b/c the plot is way to similar to Angel.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I won'ttell anyone ,we Buffy/Angel fan must stick together.

message 8: by Shreela (new)

Shreela I'll be watching Whedon's new series, Dollhouse, because I loved Buffy/Angel, and we both loved Firefly. I found a trailer: http://www.dollverse.com/trailer/

message 9: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments Gary Oldman is a great actor; he's usually good, whatever he's in.

I did see Gerard in Phantom. I was impressed that he did his own singing. It's got really difficult pieces, musically.

message 10: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Gerard Butler has been in a lot of stuff lately- he's showing himself to be a pretty versatile actor. Who goes from playing Beowulf to the Phantom of the Opera? I mean honestly...

Love Buffy and Angel- The new comic series that continue the storylines where the shows left off are pretty good, particularly the Angel one.

message 11: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 9 comments Thank you so much for the trailer info. It is great! We can't wait, let's hope that it gets better air time than Firefly did. We adore that show and still watch our DVDs!

message 12: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments The Buffy comic has about 14 issues out- I think the first arc has been collected into a trade. The Angel comic has about 7 issues (ish) out. I don't think there's a trade for it yet. Each comic continues its series where it left off with the last episode. Some interesting twists happening in Buffy, and Angel's literally in Hell.

message 13: by pianogal (new)

pianogal | 15 comments Yeah, Buffy has 16 comics out and the first eight were collected into a graphic novel called "The Long Road Home" I think. Angel's working on his eighth book and even Spike is getting his own series that should start sometime this summer...just FYI. Joss Whedon rocks!

message 14: by Christal (new)

Christal | 28 comments I loved Buffy and Angel. The comics keep the hope alive! I heard that Joss and ASH are going to be making a Giles/Ripper mini-movie for the BBC. Anyone else heard about this?

message 15: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 46 comments I have heard it but nothing concrete yet.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I watched Charmed from the beginning to the end and i bawled my eyes out on the last show. I really wished that show didn't end. I'm secretly holding out for a spin-off called Charmed Again starring their kids.

message 17: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I watched Charmed up until the 5th or 6th seasons. I didn't like all the Phoebe focus and I didn't like Rose McGowan that much. I'm sorry but it went to hell when Prue (Shannon Doherty) left/got fired. It was okay but then they brought in Chris and confused the hell out of me. I really hated Kaley Cucoco (I forgot her name on the show) when she was introduced.

message 18: by Phoebebb (last edited Jul 10, 2008 06:33AM) (new)

Phoebebb I was not impressed with Underworld at all. To me, it was just one of those movies where they throw in as much action and special effects as possible so the viewer will not realize there is no actual plot.

I LOVED Interview with the Vampire but I was not a fan of Queen of the Dammed; mostly likely because I do not read Anne Rice’s books. Her writing is just so monotone and dull to me, all this “He said, and then she said and then they did this.” absolutely no detail. That’s my opinion anyway. After watching Interview I tried to read the book and her writing style drove me so crazy I couldn’t get past the first chapter.

I am a Buffy and Angel fan as well, but I cannot think of any other urban fantasy based movies or TV series that I like; which is strange to me because that is my favorite subject for books. I will check out True Blood in September on HBO though.

message 19: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb And now I am definitely checking out Dollhouse! Thanks for the link Shreela =)

message 21: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I love The Lost Boys. I hated Queen of the Damned. I only saw it for Aaliyah but even she didn't make it good.

message 22: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) He was good..thoroughly creepy, lol. I think I liked the girl more than anyone else. It was the first film I've ever seen him in so his portrayal was very good to me as well.

message 23: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I didn’t like Queen of the Dammed either. I watched it for Aaliyah and because I loved Interview with the Vampire so much, but it was such a disappointment.

message 24: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) It sucked big time. I hated that Aaliyah was hyped up but she didn't appear until at least an hour into the movie. I hate when they do that. Same thing happend with Usher in The Faculty.

message 25: by Deebles (new)

Deebles | 11 comments I really liked all the Blade films, they were exactly what i wanted from them, however, i watched the first Underworld film and was really disapointed. Unfortunately it was so long ago i can't remember what i didn't like about it.

I remember enjoying Interview with a Vampire (although i have only seen this once) but hating Queen of the Damned.

Now as for the Dresden Files, to be honest i thought they could have tried harder. I absolutely loved the books but i thought the TV series came off as a bad rip off of Angel. Harry was almost accurate, Bob was good but not as i imagined at all and Murphy was all wrong. From friends who watched the TV show but had not read the books, i think they gained more enjoyment from it than me. I felt that they could have based a whole series, or maybe half a series on each book rather than make something so episodic.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Crystal- I loved the Craft and Lost Boys. I remeber watching the craft and then playing "Light as a feather, Stiff as a board" with my friends. LOL

message 27: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I remember that about The Faculty, Usher was hardly in the movie at all.

message 28: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Dannii, I honestly liked Underworld, I just hated the sequel. I liked the whole vamp/werewolf rivalry that comes with all vamp/werewolf stories.

message 29: by Theresa (last edited Jul 16, 2008 03:22PM) (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I only watched the first Blade. I thought it was awful. Of course, I get squeamish over gratuitous gore, which is why I thought Blade sucked.

I watched Interview with a Vampire when I was younger and remember thinking it was pretty cool. Tom Cruise looked terrible as a blond. Kirsten Dunst was so adorable and innocent back then! :) I tried to read the book about a year ago and gave up at the end of the first chapter. BORING!

Queen of the Damned... they were playing it on Spike or some other channel a couple months ago. It had me giggling at the corniness of it. I only made it through about 30 minutes before changing the channel because my husband and I were getting stiches in our sides from laughing at it.

Underworld, I liked the first one a lot more than the second one. My husband likes them both quite a bit - he's got a massive crush on Kate Beckinsale. Bill Nighy is one of my favs - especially with all the quirks that he brought to Viktor.

message 30: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I have seen all of Interview with the Vampire or Blade. LOL. I've seen the more of the 2nd Blade than the 1st one but i never finished any of them.

Who was Lestat in Interview? Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt?

message 31: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Cruise was Lestat in Interview, Townsend was a much better Lestat in Queen of the Damned, but I never actually saw that whole movie, so I can't really be called an authority. If there were more than 5 figures involved someone might be able to pay me to read a few of those books again, but NEVER Tale of the Body Thief.

For Dresden fans: there's a new comic book series out there that's a prequel to the novel series: Welcome to the Jungle. Dabel Brothers is doing it, and so far I really like the first three issues that are out. The adaptation is spot on with characters' look and personality (none of Harry's sarcasm is lost, yay!). Word is that the comics will be an ongoing series, and their main goal is to fill in story gaps between the novels. I'm really looking forward to seeing some of the stories that are to come.

message 32: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Speaking of Dresden, can I skip the first book in that series or would I be confused for book 2?

message 33: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I couldn't get into the 1st one. Someone said the book picked up in the 2nd one.

I'll give it a shot again probably.

message 34: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I've never liked Tom Cruise so anyone would be better than him ... in my opinion.

message 35: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Really? I used to have a major crush on him until he got nuts. I had a girl crush on Katie Holmes until he turned her weird. I thought Tom was his hottest in either Vanilla Sky (dumb movie) or Mission Impossible 2. Love the long hair and goatee thing.

message 36: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I've never thought Tom Cruise was hot, but I will agree that he was almost hot in MI:2. Ranata, I don't like long hair on men, but his is so pretty! :) I think it softened his face a bit too.

message 37: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) Theresa, he is totally pretty. I like long hair on some guys but not all. It works for him to me so I think he should always keep it that way. He ruined the crush on him and his wife once they got together. I remember being really excited for her for getting to date Tom Cruise but now I'm like RUN KATIE RUN!!

message 38: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessartisan) It's too late for Katie. She's a $tepford wife now.

message 39: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments I loved Tom back in the early days of his career. Who doesn't love young Tom dancing in his underware in Risky Business?? Or Tom from Top Gun? How can you not love Maverick?!?! He's gone off the deep end now though. Bleh.

message 40: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) This is pretty much true! LOL. I hear he interviewed several women, including Jessica Alba about "being with him" but Katie won out. She wasn't even his first choice. This was obviously an arranged relationship, which is why everyone was saying their daughter Suri was Katie's ex's Chris Klein. Too bad Suri looks like them both equally!

message 41: by Theresa (new)

Theresa (tsorrels) I suppose it was one of the opening scenes in Blade I that put me off. The club with the blood bath? Disgusting.

Has anyone else watched the "Ultraviolet" BBC show from 1998? It has Jack Davenport (yum!) and is about vampires.

Ultraviolet on IMDB.com

message 42: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I remember liking Blade—but not enough to watch the sequels lol—and I actually liked the blood bath scene. I’m usually not into gory, but that wasn’t too bad.

message 43: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I love all three of the Blade movies. This is how I picture Wesley Snipes and have a hard time with him in any other role. (I do love him in Demolition Man though). Anyone watch the Blade tv series? Just one season, but it was good. It was cast well so it worked for me.

message 44: by Ranata (new)

Ranata Clark (thatchicknata) I just got into this show called Special Unit 2 and it deals with Supernatural creatures. My mother got me into that one. It's awesome and the lead guy is adorable!

Then there's Tru Calling which was like the Ghost Whisperer. It got cancelled but Eliza Dusku (the girl that played Faith on Angel) was pretty good in that role.

message 45: by Phoebebb (new)

Phoebebb I liked Tru Calling, but I couldn't get into the second season for some reason. I'm excited though because Faith is going to be in Joss' new series called Dollhouse. =D

message 46: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 32 comments I am looking forward to a new supernatural-themed series beginning this year called Fringe. It stars Joshua Jackson. (Pacey from Dawson's Creek.) I've seen a few commercials for it, and it looks interesting.

message 47: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessartisan) Fringe does look good. I'll be on the lookout for Dollhouse, too.

message 48: by Kat (new)

Kat | 16 comments Kindred: The Embraced totally cracked me up when it came out. It was a TV show based on the RPG of the same name by White Wolf games (a very dark, urban horror RPG). There were also a lot of inconsistencies between the show and the game, which really put off a lot of the White Wolf fans, who are pretty hardcore. It's nothing I can really explain unless you've played the game.

My husband absolutely adored Special Unit 2, and was really upset when it got cancelled. Seems like every time he really gets into a show it gets the axe.

message 49: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessartisan) Did anyone watch Brimstone?

message 50: by Jess (new)

Jess (jessartisan) The IMDB summary:

Ezekial Stone, a former cop, killed his wife's rapist and was later killed himself. He is sent to Hell for his crime. However, 113 evil souls have escaped, and the Devil sends him back to Earth to recover them. Both Stone and the escaped souls can only be harmed or killed by each other, and they can be sent back to Hell if their eyes (the "windows to the soul") are destroyed. If Stone can recover all 113, then he'll be given a second chance at life...or so the Devil says.
