No, I think those were popular in 1910.

Did you hit up Wikipedia or do you just carry that knowledge in your head?

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Clara? Doris? Mabel?

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

what cartoon character used to say, "heavens to murgatroyd?" ...or something similar.

SEE??? HE said Mabel!

The data is at the SSA site:

message 71: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments There are some good 1930s names on that list. I kind of like Dolores, but I guess it could be a pain for a woman to have a name like that today...

message 72: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Wasn't that a Seinfeld story line?

message 73: by [deleted user] (new)

When Dolores got to the front of the line she was told,
"NO SOUP FOR YOU"

message 74: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
I was thinking a more R-rated story line.

message 75: by Jonathan (last edited Nov 24, 2010 06:09PM) (new)

Jonathan Lopez | 4726 comments Apparently so: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Juni...

Not an episode that I remember.

I was just making a joke: The Spanish word "dolor" means pain. The plural is "dolores."

message 76: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24778 comments Mod
Oh, I was thinking it meant sadness. Hence my incomprehension.

I like the way the wikipedia writer thinks nipple is spelled nippel.

message 78: by [deleted user] (new)

dolor. so what is the Spanish word for money?

message 79: by Carol (new)

Carol | 1678 comments There were two other Carols in my grade - both very smart. In high school someone a few years ahead had the same first and last name - the comparison ended there - she was a short brunette and a total jock. I like to meet other Carols, I imagine it gives us a connection.
I love Carol Burnett and despise Carol Channing.

message 80: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) I'm indifferent about people having my name. It's a pretty common name. However, if they turn out to be a real ass then I'm peeved I have to share it with them.

message 81: by Jammies (last edited Nov 24, 2010 08:53PM) (new)

Jammies Just looked at the SSA link, my name was uncommon in the 1920s, popular in the 1960s, and is now declining in popularity again.

message 82: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i've read somewhere there are about fifty people in the netherlands with my first name, and it's a typically dutch first name so probably less than 100 people in the entire world share my first name. i don't meet a lot of people with the same name so when i do i'm always a bit shocked and have a small identity crisis because i'm not used to it.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

I know a Janine she isn't Dutch.

message 84: by Michael (new)

Michael Michael is a pretty popular name so it doesn't bother me. What I don't like is when someone assumes familiarity and changes your name.

Yes! Or my name too, for that matter!

People do that to me too and I hate it. "Hi, I'm Pamela." "Nice to meet you, Pam." UGH. Nicknames are for family and friends, not strangers! No wonder I prefer to be called Jammies.

Barb, you probably don't want to know that you share a name with my mother.

No wonder the postcards take such a long time to find people when they are using an assumed name.

message 100: by Michele (new)

Michele bookloverforever (lovebooks14) | 1970 comments I am not at all possessive of my name whether it is spelled with 1 or 2 "l"s. There was another girl with my name in high school but she spelled hers with 2 "L"s and everyone called her "Mitch". Only my dad called me "Mitch" sometimes, very rarely. 99% of the time everyone called me Michele.
