Laura (lauramoore10) | 13 comments I'm still waiting for "When the Sun Goes Down" by Gwynne Forster and i just got an email saying that i won "Keeping Time": A Novel By: Stacey McGlynn

message 353: by Carol (new)

Carol I got a notification that I have won Mr. Toppitt. I wanted that one, so yeah for me!

message 354: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments I got an email this morning - I won The Family Affair and since i'm on a huge M/M kick i'm happy!

message 355: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments I haven't won any since Girl, Stolen and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with not adding them all to my to-read list. Anyone know if that is a requirement?

message 356: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments i think its more the doing a review, than adding it to the list...not sure how they check that though

message 357: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments Huh. Well, I did a review :) So I guess I've done my part.

message 358: by Toni (new)

Toni New here... not sure what this means - what do you "sign up for"?

message 359: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments After you log in at the top of your screen there is a "explore" tab and if you hover over it you'll get another menu and you click on books. Then you'll see a "giveaways" tab and from there you can sign up to win different books.

Kristi (kristicasey) Stephanie wrote: "I haven't won any since Girl, Stolen and I'm wondering if it has anything to do with not adding them all to my to-read list. Anyone know if that is a requirement?"

Stephanie, I won 2 right away when I first started signing up, and I haven't won any since. It's been months. It doesn't matter what you do.

I've added them to my TBR list, I've not added them. I reviewed them both, mentioned they were first reads in review, placed them on first reads shelf, put in they were recommended by First Reads giveaway.

Supposedly it's a completely random thing.

message 361: by Toni (new)

Toni Thanks!

message 362: by Kaion (new)

Kaion (kaionvin) Ruh-oh, got a bit of a ARC pile-up while I was busy with my classes and things: Fated to be reviewed, The Stray Sod Country to-be-read, and The Devotion of Suspect X got here just this morning.

message 363: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments I've got two from Librarything waiting to be read and reviewed so I know the feeling. Still haven't won any others from GoodReads though.

message 364: by Carol (new)

Carol I am still waiting for Mr. Toppit Hope it comes soon.

message 365: by Dani (new)

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments Oh man! I didn't even know about the giveaway section! I just spent the last half hour entering in a whole bunch. Awesome! I love this site.

message 366: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) Blugh. I didn't enter any for a couple of months, then entered a few interesting ones a couple of days ago. No wins so far, but I figure as I get back to regular activity that could change.

Of course, this is coming from the girl who is still slogging through the ARC she won almost a year ago and hasn't started her second one yet because of that. The good news is that in the past three days I've finished two books, which has put me in the mood to read more.

message 367: by Dani (new)

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments I won my very first book with First Reads today!!! I won Get Energy! by Denise Austin. It's not normally a book I would read but God knows I could use the help in living a healthier and more energized lifestyle. I exercise a lot but I don't eat well so it defeats the purpose a lot of the time. Perhaps this books will have some good advice for me. I have to wait 4-6 weeks for it which kind of sucks but it was also free so I can't complain too much. Thanks Goodreads!

message 368: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I just won With Good Behavior by Jennifer Lane and although I'm not much of a romance reader, this book looked too good to pass up.

message 369: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) I was notified this morning that I had won Separate Kingdoms: Stories by Valerie Laken. I'm very pleased, as I love both short story collections and unconventional writing.

(Incidentally, I always add First Reads books to my To Read shelf, as well as to a First Reads Current Entries shelf for my own organization. If I win, I move them from that shelf to First Reads Wins.)

message 370: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Today I won The Dead Path by Stephen M. Irwin. I can't wait to read it since I love anything and everything even semi-horror.

message 371: by Dani (new)

Dani (The Pluviophile Writer) (pluviophilewriter) | 237 comments Woo! I won another one! I won Separate Kingdoms: Stories by Valerie Laken.
Looks interesting.

message 372: by Caity (new)

Caity (adivineeternity) That's awesome Alisha. I entered to win it, but I am pretty certain I'm cursed on Goodreads. I enter give-aways giving away 100+ copies of a book and don't win. I have *something* written in each of the review boxes for both of my previous wins, too, and have them shelved accordingly and whatnot.

I dunno. Just frustrated with the give-aways here right now.

message 373: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments You're not the only one Caity. I won two over at librarything two straight months in a row and I'm not even active over there (just can't get used to their layout) but here I log in every day, have tons of "friends", reviewed the one book I did win and I enter for a few a week and still get nothing. What are you gonna do though? They're free so I guess we can't really complain that our luck is terrible haha.

This week I received several books from Book Depository and one mysterious parcel containing a book I knew I hadn't bought or won.
Suddenly I checked over at librarything. I'd forgotten to review the last two books I got there but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Haha yeah. I guess they're not picky or have a different system for choosing winners. I'm going to review the books. I just haven't been in the right "mood" for their subject matter. Unfortunately I don't see one out of the whole batch this month that I'd want. But a few here that I really do! But can't seem to win.

message 376: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments Okay, so now I feel a teeny bit bad for winning The Vyne: Mystery of the Hidden Ember today considering it's my third win this week and a few people on this thread haven't one anything in a long time. I'm sending you all "good luck" vibes and hope you guys win something really soon!

message 377: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments oh, I totally just added The Vyne to my Wishlist - it looks really good!

message 378: by Alicia (new)

Alicia (kalypso) | 102 comments I haven't won anything in a long while. I am looking for something new and different to read. Does anyone have any awesome suggestions from things they have won?

message 379: by Carol (new)

Carol I am still waiting for Mr. Toppit . They have not sent it yet. It has been since Nov. 30th. I have let them know. I was looking forward to reading it too. Oh well.

message 380: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicasey) I didn't win it, but I know someone who did, and it's on bookstore shelves now. It's called Matched.

She was so excited when it hit shelves bc she was desperate to discuss the book with others.

Hope that helps.

I just bought Matched - it's gotten some mixed reviews, but I think it sounds great! I'm a sucker for dystopian fiction though.

Glad it's not just me! I still have not received The Bite Before Christmas, which I won Nov 17. I was really looking forward to reading it before Christmas, now...not so much. I was going to give them until next Friday before reporting it as not received, as that will be two months.

Looks like it has potential.

message 384: by Sue (new)

Sue I have won Pavilion of Women by Pearl Buck. I was beginning to think I wasn't going to win again for a long time and then I got the message about this book. I'm looking forward to it.

Yes -- I plan on reading it this year too. I think this will be a busy year.

message 387: by Carol (new)

Carol I just bought three more books bad me. The Twain Shall Meet ,The God of Small ThingsandZeitoun

message 388: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 107 comments I'd say good for you Kitty, 'The Twain Shall Meet' is by an 'Indie' G.R. author, and has had great reviews. I don't know the other two, but I might be right in thinking they too are G.R. authors so I say well done, you're not bad at all!!
Come on you readers, grasp the nettle and try some of these 'Indie' books, the best are as good as anything else, better than a lot of mainstream.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

No Timothy Dave Eggers is not a goodreads author and neither is Arundhati Roy.

J. Guevera sometimes appears out of the blue to make a comment and then continues along his meandering ways.

message 390: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Pilgrim (oldgeezer) | 107 comments Hi Kitty,
'J's meandering ways are usually quite entertaining, I have no idea why but the other two book titles both rang faint, distant bells, like I should know them. Anyway I stand by 'the good Kitty' in as much as you are not afraid to venture 'off the beaten track' as followed by sheep! I hope all three are memorable reads for all the right reasons.
All the best Paul Rix [oldgeezer]

message 391: by Carol (new)

Carol Thanks Timothy.

message 392: by Steph (new)

Steph (somethingplace) | 79 comments Hey! I finally won another one. I scored The Moral Lives of Animals. I am hoping I'll enjoy it. I'm not a big non-fiction reader but I do love animals and the concept behind this.

message 393: by Sue (new)

Sue I actually won another First Reads book, The Anatomy of a Moment, very different from other books I've read, being about a moment in Spanish history. It sounds very interesting.

Alicia (kalypso) | 102 comments Stephanie wrote: "Hey! I finally won another one. I scored The Moral Lives of Animals. I am hoping I'll enjoy it. I'm not a big non-fiction reader but I do love animals and the concept behind this."

I really wanted to read that one! Looks interesting! Let me know what you think.

message 395: by Susan (new)

Susan (susangollahermiller) I have won seven so far. I have found that when I win one I immediately put it on a shelf called First Reads Wins and on my TBR shelf. Then when I am done I post a review. It seems to never fail, that once I post a review I win again. But if I don't put a review I just wait and wait. So I think it must have something to do with the review for sure.

message 396: by Samantha McNulty (new)

Samantha McNulty My first-reads copy of Warped arrived this morning! Very excited!

message 397: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I just won Haunting Jasmine! I'm also still waiting for The Dead Path to arrive. Hope it arrives soon since I was really looking forward to reading that one.

message 398: by Tina (new)

Tina A friend told me that these giveaways aren't really random, that how many reviews and how "active" you are helps your chances? Do you think that is true?

message 399: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 618 comments there is a whole algorithm that they use for selection...nothing is ever truely random...its explained in the rules that are off to the right of the screen when you sign up for one

message 400: by Dree (new)

Dree I won (and received QUICKLY) a copy of Oh, Beautiful: An American Family in the 20th Century. I need to finish one of the books I am reading now (and it won't be War and Peace, being 50 page in), and then I am starting.

I have won a few, and I don't get the selection process. 2 were thrillers (which I very rarely read, and won't knowingly be entering for again), the rest memoirs, which I do read a lot of. No nonfiction/history/food or literary fiction, which I read lots of.
