Sandra D (sandrad) It wasn't just a chunk, either. No, she had to crumble it into little tiny bits so the fish could eat it.

I vacuumed the gravel and did a big water change, but my chocolate pleco still went tits up. The rest of the fish look all right, though.

RIP, Count Chocula.

Lori As a fellow aquarium keeper, my sympathies. Since you named him, Count Chocula must have been one of your faves.

My tank has a severe case of Ich right now, and the drops seem to be doing nothing - 3 treatments so far, raised the water temp, keeping the tank dark for most of the day. Nada. I can't find my 2 cories, hope they're OK.

What kind of fish do you have?

message 3: by Sandra D (new)

Sandra D (sandrad) Ooh, ich. I hope everything turns out all right.

We have gouramis, rainbowfish, cherry barbs and three different schools of tetras in a 55-gallon tank. And guppies, for my granddaughter.

What do you have?

message 4: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Oh, that's terrible.

*snork* *snicker*

Seriously, I'm sorry about your fish.

*titter*

Okay, I'm sorry, I tried to contain it, but that's also really damn funny! *belly laugh*

Sandra D (sandrad) Yeah, that's life with a three-year-old. She thinks she's a "good helper."

This is not even the worst aquarium disaster I've ever had. Many years ago, my niece poured a bottle of perfume into the tank and killed everything.

message 6: by Sandra D (new)

Sandra D (sandrad) No, I couldn't yell at her too much. She's my only grandchild and I've raised her since she was a baby, so she's got me wrapped pretty tight. She's at that age, though, where she's into everything ALL THE TIME, and by the end of the day I'm pretty wrecked from trying to keep up with her.

Gwegeenee What a good innovation ...

Lori Sorry Sandra for the late response - it's actually been beautiful in Seattle (finally) so I've been taking advantage!

Still a bad case of ich. My coryadoras died. I love those fish, so peaceful, so sociable, they snuggle together.

Anyway, now I have some rainbows, cardinals, a Betta, a pleco, convict cichlid and 2 blue rams. Aside from cories, my favorites are cichlids, rams are fine for a community tank but I took a chance with the convict. He's getting alittle too big for my 20 gallon tank, but he's been fine. They have such a personality and pretty darn smart for a little fish. And they have that evil smirky smile all the time - like dinosaurs!

Sandra D (sandrad) You have rams? In a community tank? I didn't know you could do that. My husband called from the pet store wanting a German blue ram he'd found and I told him he couldn't have it.

I do love my rainbows. Do yours ever do the courtship dance for you?

So sorry about your corys.

Lori Hmm, no courtship dance. Maybe I have 2 of the same sex? I know they like to school, once this ich is over I have to get more.

Yes, I've often had rams in a community tank. And in your 55 gallon, they'll be fine, able to carve out a small section of territory. My fish store recommended them to me. They are the most peaceful of the cichlids and they don't get too large. The only time they are aggressive in my small tank is when they are mating and anyone gets too close to their eggs - but all they do is chase everybody away. Then they go back and eat the eggs themselves!

With rams, you just need to keep the pH neutral. I love my rams. If you get a male and a female the male's colors will be great and they concentrate on each other, not the other fish.

Oh I forgot, I also have 5 hatchets, not the regular, these are quite pretty, like abalone.

Sandra D (sandrad) The courtship dance is very, very cool. Two males zoom to a side-by-side head-to-tail position, stop on a dime, flare their fins and quiver at each other, then they swirl together up to the top of the tank and back down again. Their colors get really intense, too. And they seem to do it at a certain time every day.

You need the right ratio of males to females to get the dance, but I'm not sure what that ratio is (males have sharply pointed anal fins, while the females' are more rounded). I've seen them dancing at the aquarium shop, too, but so far I haven't managed to get the right combination in my tank at home. Or, maybe I have and I'm just not watching them at the right time of day. I don't know.

At my last job, there was a tank with mainly rainbows and angels set up right in front of my desk; I watched them more than I worked, and that's when I got hooked on rainbows. They had so much personality and were so playful, like puppies. And every morning at 10:00, they danced.

Thanks for the info on rams; we might have to try a pair.

Lori I've never seen that courtship dance! I probably have never had enough rainbows at the same time - usually I stick with 3, they can get big! I don't remember the type I have now, but they are smaller. Now I have to get to my fish store before they sell out, and get 3 more. I want some courtship stuff going on!

Angels are so non-angelic!
