Why We Hate Most Of The Books Our Teachers Tell Us To Read

I think that we don't like the books from the classroom because we over work the topic. Stopping in the middle of the chapter, sentence, or paragraph to discuss what it means gets on my nerves very quickly. Then to sit there and do a worksheet about what the character is doing gets a little frustrating if all you want to do is keep reading.

you're right. but i have to say that teachers try to make sure the students are following along and understand the gyst of what is happening. many students do not, so we have to make sure.

I think I maybe coming at this from a student angle here. But I think teachers want to teach us what good writing is and how to analyze and break down a story is all good. That really differs person to person. I break down my stories way different then how my Professor wanted be to. However, in the end what you say is a good story is not a good story for others. I have an that happen to me many times. This last Lit class that I started this group for was not to my liking. She liked the books and thought she was choosing "good" books. I have to say that Hated all 80% of the books and couldn't even finish them. The two I kind of liked I read before.

I read because I like to, love to. I don't read for good writing per say but because the book will take me somewhere far away from single mother life with a pile of dishes and biology homework.

As for grammar skills. We all need more of that. Yes, I hate grammar and commas and past participles. But we all really should get more educated on it! I would complain the whole time but I also know I could do with a good dose of grammar 101 and 201 for sure!

Making sure the students follow along, my prof handed out a surprise quiz every time we met. Wow, big surprise. *Sigh*

I agree with a lot of the people commenting. Personally, I rarely liked any of the "classics" I was required to read in high school. I did enjoy a few of the required readings such as The Great Gatsby, and I know a lot of people enjoy To Kill a Mocking Bird. My problem with these books is the fact that many of these books will not appeal to a large group of students. Very few people in high school tend to enjoy a Tale of Two Cities. I believe schools need to throw in one or two modern books along with the classics. This may result in more people reading outside of school.

That is the best end result just to have people wanting read outside of school and for fun.

It is difficult to choose any book that everyone agrees is good writing. I knowthose classics are hard to Wade through, but when else will you read dickens?

I really enjoyed reading Dickens in school. I particularly loved The Tale of Two Cities. Maybe it was because I really liked my junior english teacher, but I really enjoyed most of the books we read. The only book I really hated was Willa Cather's My Antonia. It was just really dull for me. Other than that I really liked the reading choices, so did most of my calssmaates. Maybe it was the teacher that made it fun for us, but I think the majority of us liked the stories in and of themselves, especially Catch-22. We might be really wierd though.

I'm glad you enjoyed so many of the books! It makes it so much better to live through the semester. :)

I'v always skipped reading books for classes but I'll find myself reading them later on to find out what the big deal was on why I should of read it. Oops... But I keep them all.
