My husband and I had spent a year trying to open adopt (we already had a biological son.) I spent hours talking to 16 year old girls, many who just wanted someone to talk to. Although we never got a placement (birth mothers didn't love that we had a biological son and they were unsure of stability because my husband and I are both writers!) I couldn't forget their voices, and so the novel was born!
