OK, I am going to do that before starting on my group read. It seems that I haven't had much reading time lately, not liking that at all!

Well, gosh darn it....I started it. I couldn't resist. I'll probably be crying tomorrow then.

Penny (sylverpenny) | 8 comments Hi my name is Penny. I just started "The 7th Victim" by Alan Jacobson. So far it's pretty good.

Good reading everyone.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hello Penny :)

I just started DECEPTION by Jonathan Kellerman.

I was enjoying HEART OF THE MATTER by Emily Giffin but couldn't finish by library due date and couldn't renew because there is a looong waiting list. Sighhh so I put another hold on it.

message 1058: by [deleted user] (last edited Jun 08, 2010 05:29AM) (new)

Mona, I have that Emily Giffin book here. I should read it to you. You bring the cupcakes.

P.S. Hi Penny!

message 1059: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hi Christine! Sounds good!!! I could bring cupcakes or the leftovers of the 5lb chocolate fudge layer fantasy cake hubby bought for my daughter's 5th b-day on Sunday.

I was so bummed that I couldn't renew. I hope I don't have to wait too long.

Hi Mona, I really enjoy Kellerman but I'm really behind on his books. I look forward to hearing how you
liked Deception.

message 1066: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments So glad I decided to read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, plan on dedicating the afternoon to it today. I, also, picked up Still Alice last night to look it over and ended up reading 25 pages of it. I may have to sneak it in next. Oh my, when will I get to that group read I'm committed to. Yikes!

message 1069: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I just finished Stalin's Children: Three Generations of Love and War which I liked very much. Now I will start By Fire, By Water by Mitchell Kaplan.

By Fire, By Water looks good Chrissie!

message 1071: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Hi Penny:

I've only read a few pages so far but I'm liking it so far.
I'm also really far behind on Kellerman's books(ok -- I'm far behind on everyone's books). I like Kellerman but I only read(or put on my to-read list) the ones where the story interests me.

message 1072: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Lee, I hope it will be good. The subject matter is intriguing - the inquisition, Christopher Columbus and Jewish Conversos. The main character Luis de Santàngel really existed. Kirkus also gave it a good review. And I like historical fiction.

I over-Kellermaned one summer many years ago. I went on a binge and read one after another after another (I was on bedrest at the time so this increased my binging behavior). Now I can't read him anymore. I still have a few waiting for me if I ever decide to return.

That sounds intriguing, I will have to put it on my to-read list.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Christine: I can never read the same author in a row. I need a change in genre and writing style.

message 1076: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Gundula and Lee, Lauren gave it a good review and supposedly it is uplifting although the times are bad. There are interestingn historical details too.

message 1077: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I could not put down Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet until I had finished it tonight! I loved this book! I think I'm going to start Still Alice next, actually have already read the first 25 pages. It's my idea of a scary read, a woman who has early onset of Alzheimer's.

message 1078: by [deleted user] (new)

Mona wrote: "Christine: I can never read the same author in a row. I need a change in genre and writing style."

I shouldn't do it, but sometimes I lose my mind and author binge. I read all of Harlan Coben's Bolitar series one after the other until I was done. Of course, I can never get tired of him.

Yay! Wasn't it fantastic???

Let me know about Still Alice. I have that in paperback here.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Christine, I love the reference :)

message 1081: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Right now, I'm about 100 pages into a cozy mystery--Claws and Effect by Rita Mae Brown. It's my first by her, but I think it's cute how much of a role the cats and the dog play! :)

message 1082: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, Still Alice is awesome! it's fiction, but it is so scary because it is so real. I think most people are scared of Alzheimer's, and reading about someone who is 50 years old and has the early onset kind is terrifying. It's not much of a comfort read, but I highly recommend you reading it.

message 1085: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I just finished By Fire, By Water which was fabulous historical fiction about the Spanish Inquisition. Check my review if you are interested. I will just say that it was both informative and put the reader right htere in that era. Although it depicted a horrible period of time, it did not leave the reader in despair but instead with hope! Now I have begun The Physician.

message 1086: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Jo, Last Light looks scary and good.

I just finished The Girl Who Chased the Moon, which I loved and am now reading Hannah's Dream.

Mary, I have Hannah's Dream in my short list pile. Let me know what you think of it.

I'm going to make another attempt at A Suitable Boy A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth , which is 1475 pages. I got to the 600 page mark last year, but set it aside. Now I have to start over because I forgot too many details.

I've started a definite comfort read Georgette Heyer's Venetia

message 1090: by Mary (new)

Mary | 245 comments Kathy, will do! And Happy Birthday to your son!

message 1091: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Christine, I tried A SUITABLE BOY but didn't get as far as you did(only made it thru 100 pages or so) so I could brave it again but it's not at the top of my list.

But to start over after having read 600 pages...

I am so glad my laptop is working again -- this morning it started running at a glacial pace and I was getting really frustrated. I called hubby and he gave me the standard tech support fix "just unplug everything for 5 minutes and then start it up again." It didn't work and I had to do it myself repeatedly using online help. Hubby is supposed to be the tech whiz -- so not feeling that today.

message 1092: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawn9655) I just started a re-read of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil -- its a more interesting read now since I've recently been to Savannah and have seen the places that are written about.

message 1093: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Mona, I had A Suitable Boy on my TBR shelf for ever - never got around to it - gave it away. If you don't love it enough to finish it - don't! Too many books and too little time to read all of the books you will love - don't waste time on those you won't if you can help it. However, feel free to ignore my advice!

message 1094: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, I followed your advice before I even met you :). I gave up on it. I did it again with The Last Summer.

message 1095: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I'm reading The Kalahari Typing School for Men by Alexander McCall Smith. I absolutely adore this series. I've read 2 other books in the last 4 days in the series.

message 1096: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Mona, I am glad you did. Now you can find something that you truly enjoy. Are you reading anything now? I just started reading The Abyssinian for the Challenge and I am enjoying it. I am very ignorant about this area in 1699 so I have to take it slow. I bought it years ago because the cover was so pretty - finally I will read it.

message 1097: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I just realized it sounds as if I was only ignorant in 1699!

message 1098: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, I'm reading Deception: An Alex Delaware Novel. I'm not very far yet but I like it so far. I'm also trying to start a First Reads, Stand.

Regarding book covers, some are beautiful aren't they?

message 1099: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments Good Morning, Mona! Yes, I love beautiful covers and they can (and do) induce me to sometimes buy the book. I used to read a lot of the Kellermans' (husband/wife) and I enjoyed them. What is First Reads? I don't think I could read Stand - sexual abuse of anyone, but especially children/teenagers bother me too much.

message 1100: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Maude, First Reads is a type of giveaway here on GR. Authors send you a book and you can review it. I don't think there is any compulsion as such to review. But it looks like the faster you read and post reviews, the more books you get. I could be wrong. I think there is a thread somewhere on GR for First Reads.

Some of the books I've read by Indian authors have beautiful covers. I feel like buying the book even if I've read it already. The Sari Shop Widow by Shobhan Bantwal and Socialite Evenings by Shobhaa De
