OH help. ;-) I'm barely reading anything right now what with Goodreads, tv, life. Halfway through a children's picture book if that tells you anything (should be read in one sitting) and so far only 1 chapter in my novel today.

It's definately a more time consuming book/audiobook. It took me just under a month to read it.

Turn off the tv, that's my solution. I am hooked on Goodreads, though, if you haven't noticed. :)

Jeannette wrote: "Turn off the tv,"Jeannette, Ha ha ha. I'm watching more tv now because of this group (Survivor) and another group. I am becoming more discriminating though. I've given up a couple show I've been watching. And, I'm addicted to Lost but there's only a few more episodes until the season finale. And, I do agree with you. I do live in a sometimes noisy apartment and I can read well unless it's quiet so sometimes it's either phone calls or Goodreads/the web, or tv. But, I basically agree with you even though I don't follow my own advice. I've gone through different stages with tv. I've had many years where I've barely watched and some (a long time ago) when I watched way too much. Yes, I am trying to cut back.

Me too! What the heck was that ending about on Tuesday???? I'm so confused, but I love it.

I don't really miss tv all that much. We watch two or three movies on the weekend, and my husband watches the news in the morning. It's hard once you get hooked on a series, but Lost didn't hook me for some reason.

I can't cope with the TV any more... find it hard to sit still, and I'm not a knitter. I could always take up knitting again... crocheting even, it's easier!
Starting The Wives of Henry Oades, a quick read (which is just what I needed), but well written and the story in interesting.

Christine wrote: "What the heck was that ending about on Tuesday???? I'm so confused, but I love it."Christine, I'm always confused by Lost but I love it. I just hope the writers find a way to tie everything together in a way that makes sense. (I think I've figured out the big picture, but I could be wrong.) And I want my favorite people to all survive. ;-)
Lisa,
I have decided that I will just live with the confusion and see where it takes me. :) I would love to hear your big picture theory if you want to tell me (by PM maybe?).

Jeannette, The show has only a few more episodes then it's ending. So, I won't start a thread. If someone else wants to start one, I'll probably participate. I love the show but I want to watch less tv so I'm glad it's almost over.

I was just teasing Christine, since I don't participate on the Survivor thread, either. I hope the ending to Lost is satisfying, but I have a feeling it won't be. :)

I had a TV in my kitchen up until February when I had a lot of work started in my kitchen--new floor, painted cabinets, painted walls and celing, and new light fixtures. I haven't put a TV back in there yet and now spend lunchtime reading on a book. I may never put the TV back.
Jeanette, I'd certainly include Twilight as part of UF.Steam punk? That was a new one on me...thanks Darkpool for explaining that one!

Mary,
Can I hide under your bed when it freaks me out? Jeannette won't let me hide under her's.

I need satellite tv for my area and the phone company says I would have to sacrifice a number of my trees to get reasonable reception, not an option. I actually don't miss TV that much, most of the shows I like are oldies which I can watch on DVD (MASH, Benson, Barney Miller etc.), and I'm not about to fell a bunch of trees for TV shows.

I remember when my boyfriend asked a local landscaper about a certain tree in front of his house and the landscaper said it was a Chinese Mulberry Tree and should be removed. Luckily, he got a second opinion, the tree is a native mulberry tree and is considered endangered in the Hamilton area.
Does the tree produce mulberries? We had mulberry trees (bushes?) in the park near our house and the berries are wonderful. They cut most of them down because of the mess. :(
Glad you got the second opinion!
Glad you got the second opinion!
It's pretty messy, especially since it's right against the backdoor and the birds and squirrels love the berries and are constantly fighting among themselves when the berries are ripe. We tend to leave the berries for the animals, they need to eat as well.

What a fantastic looking blog! Thanks for sharing it Hayes.

You're welcome.... I can't imagine living in a whole house like that (somewhere on the blog there is or was a house for sale, chock-a-block with steam punk stuff), but I *adore* the lamps with the "surveyor's tool" legs.
I agree, a whole house would be overwhelming. A few accent pieces to give some interest and character would be wonderful though.
I am a newbe, but wanted to let you know about the terrific comfort book I have almost finished: The Seamstress. I never thought of this story of two Brazilian sister, one of which is an outlaw and the other an unhappily married rich woman. The story is so gently told it is like enjoying a huge plate of mac and cheese and then finding out that the dessert is cheese cake. Highly recommended.
Hi Barbara. Welcome to the group and thanks so much for sharing about The Seamstress: A Novel. It is already on our group bookshelf so that means at least one member thought of it as a comfort read too. I like your description the experience of reading it!

Of course!! *Mary quickly goes off to dust*
You are simply the nicest person, Mary! :)
Wow! Mary dusted for me! I'm touched. (Mary, Don't tell anyone, but you have always been my favorite)
boo-hoo! I'm going to sulk in the corner with Dixie!

Chocolate!! (vegan is fine.) I like pretty much anything chocolate. :)
I make killer chocolate cupcakes. I'll bring them to the Comfort Reads Cupcake and Book Conference.
Lee wrote: "I make killer chocolate cupcakes. I'll bring them to the Comfort Reads Cupcake and Book Conference."I wanna come! I need some of those chocolate cupcakes sent through the computer. Wouldn't that be cool?!
Count me in! Lee, could you post this yummy recipe over on Comfort Snacks??? *please*
Jo wrote: "I'm reading Lord of the Flies"Jo, Is this the first time you've read it? I read it when I was about 13. I loved it, reread it several times as a teen, but I definitely consider it the opposite of a comfort read, for me.
You must think I don't read because I haven't posted! I have just read Silent in the Sanctuary and Silent on the Moor (loved that last one's ending!) and a couple of Madeleine Brent's. Mostly I have been moving hundreds of books from bookcases to sort all my historical books in one place. Books are everywhere! I also just finished Bess Streeter Aldrich's, A Lantern in Her Hand, which for some reason always makes me cry. My great, great grandmother, who lived in Indiana, remembered seeing the young men march off to fight in the Civil War. I think she was about 12. But it gives me a funny feeling to know that my uncle, her grandson, is still alive and lived with someone who was alive during the Civil War and who later loved riding in automobiles and yelling, "Go faster!"
Maude, I was just taking a look at your bookshelves and they are very specific and interesting. You obviously have a love of historical fiction.
I just checked the first in Deanna Raybourn's series, Silent in the Grave and it seem to have mixed reviews from my GR friends. What did you think of it?
