Kim (kymi) | 14 comments I'm reading "The Heretic's Daughter" by Kathleen Kent. Kind of dark and spooky, but really intriguing so far.

I have that waiting on my Kindle. Let me know...

I'm loving Rooftops of Tehran Rooftops of Tehran by Mahbod Seraji . Lee, you would probably like this one a lot.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Today I'm finishing The Spellmans Strike Again, which I'm about to add to our bookshelves as it's definitely a perfect comfort read. (I've already added the first three books of the series: The Spellman Files, Curse of the Spellmans, and Revenge of the Spellmans), and I'll start the next book for my real world book club (meeting 4/25), which I'm not looking forward to all that much, and which I can tell will not be a comfort read: The Girl on the Fridge: Stories.

I loved this book, Kim, especially for the well-researched historical aspect of it. I met and actually spent an evening talking with Kathleen Kent, and I must say that she is one of the most intelligent, gracious, and articulate people I have ever encountered. The picture of me here is with Kathleen on the right side facing the viewer.

Ashley (readerandwriter) I recently finished "Crank" by Ellen Hopkins. I am going to start the sequel novel "Glass" . I will also be continuing with "The Last Olympian" by Rick Riordan and "Chelsey" by Chelsey Shannon.

Ashley, I thought these two books by Ellen Hopkins about her daughter were excellent, really opened up my eyes a bit about drug addiction. After you finish Glass, I have some additional information I can share with you about Ellen's daughter. I talked to Ellen last year at a book festival.

Lisa, I take it that you are enjoying the Spellmans series? I read a negative review on the first one, which I had just purchased, and was hopeful that the person reviewing it wasn't right. If you like them, the chances are pretty good that I will, too.

message 461: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, Re the Spellman series: I adore it, and they're (overall) getting better and better. However, I'm not surprised that there might be some negative reviews. They're light and the humor is dark. You have to appreciate dysfunctional families and be able to find them amusing. I think Lisa Lutz is hilarious, and has a heart, but what people find amusing and heartfelt obviously differ. I hope that you enjoy it, and if you do definitely keep reading. This last book, The Spellmans Strike Again was my favorite. I can't remember the last time I laughed so much and heartily while reading any other book.

It sounds like I will love them, too, Lisa. The words "dysfunctional" and "dark humor" are right up my alley. LOL! Thanks for giving me more to go on about these books.

I loved the first one too (only quibble--it's a tad too long), and can't wait to read the second.

I'm trying to finish up The Count of Monte Cristo, which might be a little long to be considered comfort, but the Count is an old friend and it's so much fun!!

message 464: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Kathy, They're not "great literature" but I laugh so much and I'm emotionally touched too. It's worth reading the first three to get to the fourth.

If dysfunctional and dark (also warped) humor appeal to you, you will probably enjoy these! ;-)

Hi Kimberly, I'm at about the same place, but put it down to read something else for a while. It's pretty intense, and I don't know a lot about the history so I have to stop and look a lot of things up, which slows me down. Will get back to it soon, as I really want to read about teh later part of his life.

I finished [book:The Heretic's Daughter: A Novel
. An excellent book I highly recommend -- be sure to save a big chunk of time to read this one. Once you start, you won't want to stop. I added it to the bookshelf here. A comfort read from the perspective of good ultimately triumphing over evil, and people learning from past mistakes. Let me know what you think of it...

Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favs. I consider it one of the fore-runners of modern day soaps. I love the amazing highs and lows of this book. But I do recommend an abridged version.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 529 comments I love Count of Monte Cristo, and would recommend, above everything else, a good translation.

message 469: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I started When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead today, and I'm almost 1/2 through. It might end up being a comfort read, and so far looks as though it definitely would have been had I read it at ages 9-12.

I've got the Ordinary Princess on my list!

Most of my friends have rated Shadow of the Moon very highly but so far I'm not loving it or her writing style. There seems to be a lot of backstory and describing of events and I'm not engaged with the characters yet.

Lee, I was also a little squeamish about reading The Girls but I decided to go for it and I am so glad that I did. I adore this book! The subject mattter was handled well, not at all sensationalized, and Lori Lansens is a beautiful writer. Don't be scared!!

Lee, Then, after you read you absolutely have to read A Wrinkle in Time (which is one of my all time favorite books!!!!! and one of the first I added to our shelves) you should then read a book I just read: When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead. It just won the Newbery, which was richly deserved. I loved it, even purchased a copy, and it's a kind of homage to A Wrinkle in Time.

I can't wait to you about A Wrinkle in Time, which I've read over 100 times, and where I cry with emotion at the same point every single time.

message 496: by [deleted user] (new)

I might have to look at A Wrinkle in Time again. It didn't grab me the first time I read it, so I didn't finish it.

message 497: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments For those of you--Lee, Barb, and chucklesthescot--who are interested in reading The Girls. I'm so excited about you all reading this great book. Mary is so right, Lansens writes beautifully. I, too, wondered about the subject matter before I read it, and I wasn't sure I would be interested in reading about the lives of conjoined twins. Well, what Lansens does is takes characters with whom we think we have nothing in common and can't relate to, and she shows us the common humanity that connects all of us. She is a master at finding the extraordinary in the ordinary and the ordinary in the extraordinary. I am now reading her latest book, The Wife's Tale: A Novel, whose main character is a 300 pound woman. Although, again, even after reading The Girls, I wasn't sure about the main character and what she had to offer me, Lansens is proving just how closely connected we all are.

I am still in the middle of The Neverending Story (I love this book and it's wonderful, but I keep getting distracted by the imaginative setting, I end up researching names etc. when I should be reading the story) and I've just started rereading Anne of Green Gables, which is the April selection for the Kindred Spirits group (always an amazing treat, AOGG is one of my all-time favourite books).
