Carol Dobson | 402 comments Hi Groovy, It's not started yet. May 24th, I think. My problem with not having cable, is that although I don't want hundreds of channels, there are a few very specialised ones that I like watching, eg because daughter lives in Belgium I always watch the Belgian News every day, just to keep in touch with what is happening there.

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments So I got my legs waxed. Don't know what the big fuss is about lol.

message 3103: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments Wow, Carol, that is specialized!

We have way too many channels because Hubby likes to indulge. I'll claim only Starz as my extravagance.

message 3104: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee And that's what I'm trying to say, Carol and Abigail. Why don't they arrange it to where you get the channels you want, not hundreds, I don't need nor want. So, I'm holding out until someone comes along with a better plan.

I don't know about you two, but I know some who pay a lot every month (and it seems to go up every year) just to get two or three channels they like. That's ridiculous!

Anyway, that's my venting for the day. I'm looking forward to the 24th:)

Really agree, Groovy. However, I need my few specialised channels, so am caught in the system.

Hehe... like the lyrics from "Camelot":

The winter is forbidden till December
And exits March the second on the dot.
By order, summer lingers through September
In Camelot.
Camelot! Camelot!
I know it sounds a bit bizarre,
But in Camelot, Camelot
That's how conditions are.
The rain may never fall till after sundown.
By eight, the morning fog must disappear.

I'm with you! I don't want 200 channels I'll never watch, but there are a few cable channels I wouldn't mind having. It'd be nice if you could pick the 20 or 30 channels you actually want, without being forced to accept others you'll never watch.

Sonya Heaney Sitting here on my own on a Saturday night, writing thank you letters for the funeral that was on Tuesday. Sounds depressing, but I'd rather do a fantastic job (and I REFUSE to type a standard letter - they're all personal and handwritten!) than leave it someone who doesn't care as much...

edit: I just found out military guys attended her funeral, but I don't have any addresses for them. This little old tea lady (for Defence - or Defense as I think it is in America), and they came for her funeral. It's humbling to think of.

Here in Australia, until about a year ago you didn't need cable (or whatever it's called in each country). But now all the basics have disappeared from regular television, so you NEED it.

My brother had a great idea. He is getting me and my parents the basics of Foxtel (cable) instead of presents for birthdays, Christmas, Mother's and Father's Day etc. So instead of presents, he pays the bills for us. :)

message 3109: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I'm sorry for your loss.

So, you're saying that now in Australia, if you want to watch ANY type of television, you have to pay? Please don't let America hear about it. And, what a good brother.

You don't need to have cable, but almost everything is disappearing from regular television. For example, my family was heavily involved in motorsport and netball, but now all of that is exclusively on cable, whereas until this year it was all free-to-air.

My brother is VERY good with presents. I have a lot of gorgeous jewellery because of him. :)

Natalie Hart (NatalieHart) | 11 comments The only reason I watch TV is for rugby matches. A lot of them are on expensive pay-for channels, so I don't watch them. I try and watch on the free Irish and UK channels. I have Netflix, which is fine for my entertainment needs. We have a free trial of a cable box from our phone provider but neither of us in the apartment use it. Of course they said it was a free trial but it somehow appeared on our bill. They'll be getting some polite but stern words from me when I phone them.

If it wasn't on so late in the night I'd pay for the UFC/MMA stream. I did it for a few months and got to see some great fights that wouldn't be on cable, including the female fighters. If there was more women's sport on TV I might pay for it, but that looks unlikely. The women's UFC was great. So much less machismo and arrogance, the women seemed to really like each other but were still competitive. I like that in sport, when there's honour and respect between rivals, and it's not about insulting each other.

message 3112: by Groovy (last edited May 30, 2015 08:24PM) (new)

Groovy Lee I guess greed knows no borders. What was once free tv viewing has now be bought by cable companies that you have to pay exuberant prices just to watch.

I refuse to pay high prices (that go up every year) for a million channels I don't need nor have time to watch. The only way I would pay is if I get what I want, on my terms, under $20 locked in for life! So, I guess that means I won't be able to see Wimbledon or the US Open--EVER!

That old saying: Got along without you before I met you...

Groovy Lee Carol, are your favorite players winning so far on the French Open? I'm enjoying it, although some of my favorites were knocked out: Stephens, Sarapova, Monfils.

I hope Novak at least gets to the finals.

There's a thread on another forum just for the French Open, it's so much fun keeping one another up to date. I forgot you like it, too. So, I'll be back and check on you as the next few days go by.

message 3119: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments My favourite tennis player is Federer, so not a lot of joy there at the French Open this year! Also like Djokovic, and he's playing well.

message 3120: by Groovy (last edited Jun 04, 2015 12:34PM) (new)

Groovy Lee I'm kind of shocked Federer is out, but not really. Ever since he became a father, his tennis kind of went downhill. I want to see Novak in the finals, too. They say he really acted up at the Australian Open. Do you know what happened?

Serena was very sick and yet she pulled through. That's what I like about her. She never gives up no matter how much the odds are against her and bounces right back. She proved today that she's one of the best women's tennis players in history. Like Mary Carillo said: Where there's a will, there's a Williams!

If her health improves, she'll win her third French Open. But if she doesn't get better, it will be too close to call.

I'll check back with you:)

message 3121: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Yes, I like Serena very much. She really gives everything to the game and it's always a delight to see her play.
Am waiting to see what happens with Andy Murray. Evidently he's expecting a very hostile crowd and has been mentally preparing for it. He's also a very tough player. I believe he was at the Dunblane School Massacre when he was a little boy, and he hid under the Headmaster's desk.

message 3122: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee It's a good thing he survived that.

The game was called because of rain, so I'll just have to find out tomorrow who won. It will be a tough call. Murray got the crowd behind him at one point, though.

They say Serena's got the flu and has been in bed all day. I've learned not to give up on her, but it is the FLU. I'm still rooting for her, but it will be a tough call, also.

Talk to you later:)

message 3123: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments I was disappointed Andy Murray's match did not continue because of a threatened storm as he was starting to play really well.He is a very tenacious player and never gives up.

message 3124: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Well, I wasn't surprised that Novak won over Murray. And I'm quite sure, unless the earth begins to spend the other way, that he'll win the finals:)

Serena well earned her win. Good for her. She's getting up in tennis age and it's good she'll go out a winner.

message 3125: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments hello everyone, beautiful day today, caught the sun on my legs a lil bit.

message 3126: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Well, Carol, I guess the earth spun backwards today because I did not see that coming. I also think Wawrinka's win had some to do with Novak having to play two days in a row and Stan having a full rest day.

Anyway, it was a great French Open. And thank you for keeping me company on this thread. Until next time, Carol:)

message 3127: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Same here, Groovy. I also didn't expect that. It is very likely Djokovic was somewhat tired as he had to play yesterday morning.

message 3128: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Y'all won't believe what I just saw. I was outdoors finishing up my lawn work and I hear this loud swarming noise. I look up and there's this swarm of insects flying in a circle across the neighborhood. It was just like one of those plagues right out of the Ten Commandments. But of course, no one else was around to witness it.

message 3129: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Hi everyone. We had a swarm of bees in our garden last year. I realised that they were following a Queen and looking for a new home, so I ran indoors and frantically shut all the windows in case the poor old Queen decided to live in our house, in which case we would have been besieged by bees also trying to follow her in!

message 3130: by Pamela(AllHoney), Fairy Godmother (new)

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments OMG! I know bees are necessary but I hate getting stung!

message 3131: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments I know this shows my ignorance, but I didn't realise that strawberries had to be pollinated by bees. I grew some in the greenhouse last summer and they did bear fruit, but only by luck I think, as bees don't tend to come into the greenhouse as I keep the door shut.

message 3132: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments I think bees look lovely. Little velvety, furry creatures. The name for them here in Devon is Drumbledrone. The name for a wasp is Appledrane, and is obviously connected to their drinking from apples in the Autumn.

message 3133: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments Hey, you would have had your own source of honey if the bees decided to live in your house.

Groovy Lee Maybe that's what that was, a swarm of bees following the queen looking for a new home. It was still scary.

message 3136: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Re Abigails's comment, very strangely we did once have a huge wasp/hornet's nest in our house. My father found it in the corridor which went around the attics in our house, which was very old. We had been plagued by wasps for ages, but even so, when he came across a large yellow thing which was making a humming noise, his first thought was that it was something from Outer Space, and not a nest! (Dad read too many sci-fi stories!) He took it down to the local Museum, and I believe they still have it there.

I hear ya. AT&T phone service cost more than monthly DSL service -- and I use the phone far less than internet!

message 3146: by Groovy (last edited Jun 18, 2015 11:54AM) (new)

Groovy Lee Heather, I just got some good reviews about T Mobile from another forum. One member has been with them for nine years, never had any trouble, and she absolutely loves them. You get free texting, unlimited data, and I think it's a pay-as-you-go plan with low rates and no contracts. So, I'm terminating my land line and going with T Mobile. Goodbye ATT.

I don't talk on the phone unless it's with my daughter, I hate phones and only use them for emergencies. So, why am I paying $45 a month for it?

message 3147: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Carol, did you catch Wimbledon day 1? I had to watch the highlights, the timing is not right for me. By the time I can watch it on Youtube, they're signing off. I'll try to catch some of it tomorrow.

message 3148: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments No, Groovy, I haven't watched Wimbledon yet, but I will. I noticed when I walked by the local tennis courts yesterday morning that all the courts were being played on. The advent of Wimbledon always seems to correspond in an increase of people wanting to play tennis themselves.

message 3149: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee I know, Carol. It always happens that way:) Youtube is doing a terrible job of airing it. I guess I'm just going to have to catch the reruns after it's over. I'm being updated by members from another forum. If you get any news, let me know.

message 3150: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Watched Serena Williams struggle to beat Heather Watson yesterday. Heather Watson played amazingly well, with, of course, the crowd behind her, which always helps. However, I did wonder if Serena was having an'off'day as she seemed to be making quite a lot of enforced errors.
