Carol Dobson | 402 comments Best of luck, Lizzie. Hope it goes well.

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments Thank you Carol, usually everything is ok, I just don't like going there lol.

Cathy Spencer (cm_spencer) | 111 comments Speaking of Leonard Nimoy,I had a big crush on Spock while I was still in elementary school. My adult daughter also thinks he's wonderful. It seems kind of odd when a mother and daughter both have a crush on the same actor/character. What about other cross-generational crushes?

message 3005: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Cathy, does she have a crush on the new (second) Spock or the first one?

message 3006: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Hi everyone. It was sunny here, but now grey and raining. Son moved to Maryland yesterday, so looking forward to hearing about another part of the US. Have been looking it up.

message 3008: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Heaney I haven't been here for a while...

It's after midnight and our neighbour's cat just came for his daily visit. He insists on walking through our house every day instead of around it, but it was so late tonight I actually had to wake someone up because he wouldn't leave until he checked on them! I wasn't a cat person in the past, and now I think they're hilarious.

message 3009: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Heaney I hope anybody having a lot of snow at the moment is coping!
We've just hit the start of autumn here.

Has anybody here been to a romance convention/conference before? The Australian one is on fifteen minutes from here starting Friday, with authors like Sylvia Day, Kelley Armstrong, Sarah Mayberry and Anne Gracie attending. It's exciting, but I have no idea what to expect!

No snow today but we are expecting winter weather tomorrow. (Snow, sleet, etc...)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments It rained last night, but it is clear and sunny today. 43 degrees here (San Jose) and 36 where I'm thinking of moving (Grass Valley) and 42 in the other (Rio Vista).

message 3014: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments Sonya, I've gone to writer conferences, but not reader ones. Lots of people, great workshops, and I hope you're an extrovert. :)

message 3015: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Spencer (cm_spencer) | 111 comments Lisa Kay wrote: "Cathy, does she have a crush on the new (second) Spock or the first one?"

Definitely on the first Spock, but I think she likes the new Spock too. I wasn't so sure when I watched the new Star Trek movie because the old Spock would not have gone for the emotional displays the new Spock exhibits - not to mention the kissing with Uhura - but I think they find a nice balance with him in the new series. So you can teach an old dog new tricks!

Sonya Heaney Abigail wrote: "Sonya, I've gone to writer conferences, but not reader ones. Lots of people, great workshops, and I hope you're an extrovert. :)"

Hmm. I'm skipping a couple of activities for that very reason! No trivia games or fashion parades for me! But it's the reason I'm attending the extra welcome drinks thingy. I figure at least I'll have met some people by the time all the other stuff starts...

message 3018: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yeah, Cathy, I have not complaints over the new Spock.

message 3019: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments I don't get fashion parades. Unless it's like, dress as a character or steampunk stuff or something. I do love trivia, though. ;)

Drinks are always good.

message 3020: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments There's a new Poldark series starting on Sunday here, with Aidan Turner in the lead role. Will you be seeing it over in the US, or is it only us for the moment? Loved the books and loved the first series many years ago. Can't wait.

message 3021: by Elaine (new)

Elaine The original Ross is in it but playing another character, so I hear. Oh, he was lovely, yummy!

message 3022: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments We're scheduled to get Poldark on Masterpiece Theater in June, 2015.

message 3023: by Elaine (new)

Elaine Something to look forward to, Lisa Kay.

message 3024: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yup. Have you read the books, Elaine?

message 3025: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Is Masterpiece Theater a TV channel? It's a shame we will be seeing Poldark before you. Will have to make sure I don't write a spoiler. Really looking forward to it.
Struggled through the first 3 episodes of Wolf Hall, then had to give up. It was too slow, and although I really like historical films or novels, it was just not my taste. Disappointed by it.

message 3026: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Heaney Abigail wrote: "Drinks are always good."

In the end I managed to escape anything embarrassing! The drinks on the first night... I was on drink #2 when Kelley Armstrong appeared next to me and we talked for ages. I had a few fangirl moments like that. Anne Gracie was another one I stumbled upon for no particular reason!

I'm guessing I talked to some authors I should have had more appreciation for - many were Canadian or American, so I guess they were VERY important if someone paid for them to come here! Sylvia Day gave some brilliant speeches this afternoon.

OH that's so funny.

Sometimes you just have to wonder who 'approves' or 'calendarizes' all these national holidays.

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments Poldark was amazing last night :p.

message 3038: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments We're really lucky that they've redone the Poldark series. It was also very understandable, not like the mumbling in Jamaica Inn. I gather the cast went to great lengths to make sure it was, after all the criticism of J.I.

message 3039: by Sonya (new)

Sonya Heaney Must see Poldark! I'm so out of touch with TV at the moment.

I just got back from the opening race of the 2015 Formula One season. We have tickets right on the start-finish line, and Arnold Schwarzenegger randomly appeared in front of us! (Click for a picture.)

(view spoiler)

He did interviews at the end and said: "I'll be back" and I cringed a bit!

message 3040: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Poldark was wonderful last night. Hope you saw it as well, Lizzie. The scenery is just so beautiful and dramatic. Ross was swimming naked in the sea yesterday! What more can I say! Can't wait for next Sunday.

Hi Sonya,

Was Arnold Schwarzenegger as big in person as he seems in the movies?

message 3045: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments Apparently he's gotten shorter :XD

message 3046: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Really enjoying Poldark on TV, particularly the Cornish scenery. Robin Ellis who played Ross in the original series played a cameo role as a judge last Sunday. He didn't look at all like his old self!

Cathy Spencer (cm_spencer) | 111 comments Do you ever stop reading a highly-acclaimed, well-written book because it leaves you feeling depressed? How important is mood to a story?

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Cathy wrote: "Do you ever stop reading a highly-acclaimed, well-written book because it leaves you feeling depressed? How important is mood to a story?"
I hate reading books which make me sad, so on the whole I don't. Read The Stranger (L'etranger) by Camus yesterday. Not a happy ending, but because he seemed so detached from life it didn't seem to matter. Sorry folks, I know this is not the right site for this book!

message 3049: by Jonel (new)

Jonel Cathy wrote: "Do you ever stop reading a highly-acclaimed, well-written book because it leaves you feeling depressed? How important is mood to a story?"

I find that the mood of the story is very important to me. If I can't get into it, or if it makes me feel down then I'm not likely to finish it. That said, I'm not opposed to a book that makes me cry. It's the ones with an oppressive, depressing feeling.

message 3050: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Although Frenchman's Creek is one of my favorite books, the ending has always disappointed me, and has never seemed quite in keeping with the rest of the story.
