Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments Evening ladies. Just got back from a night out. How are you all?

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I'm fine. Getting ready to bake some Christmas things to send to family. Anyone else doing any baking this year?

message 2604: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Mefford | 42 comments Hope you had fun on your night out.
I do as little as possible for the holidays from about a week before Thanksgiving until about the 15 of January. Wish I could forget they exist but I always have to make the yeast bread and the collard greens for the dinners or I would be in soooo much trouble with my family. Everybody enjoy the holidays.

message 2605: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments I did kinda wished it was on a Saturday though, would have stayed out longer.

message 2606: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Mefford | 42 comments Yeah that would have made it better.

message 2607: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments Wished the food was better and the drinks much cheaper but hey the ambience was good.

message 2608: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Mefford | 42 comments LOL Well I guess that's something at least, right.

message 2609: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments I do all the cooking here for the whole family (seven of us over one week, and three of us over two weeks) over Xmas, which takes quite a lot of my time, so never do any baking for Xmas. I buy all the cakes and mincemeat pies etc.
I find that peaches, or cherries in alcohol, are always popular after Xmas dinner, instead of Xmas pudding, which can be a bit heavy.

message 2610: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Fruit marinated in alcohol? Sounds good to me.

message 2611: by Jonel (new)

Jonel It definitely does sound tempting.

message 2612: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments I'd eat that.

message 2613: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Mefford | 42 comments We do peaches in brandy and make cake with them and the rest of the brandy.

message 2614: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Peaches or cherries seem to be the most popular fruit to have in alcohol, although I have seen Mandarin oranges.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Years ago my mother-in-law and I got tipsy from eating Davenport Plums soaked in vodka. (We had made them the spring of that year.) That was a fun Christmas.

We were preparing the buffet display and my husband and father-in-law came in from shopping and found us giggling in the kitchen. My father-in-law stepped on the peddle for the trash lid and counted the pits and said, "You're drunk!" Which just sent us into gales of laughter.

Those little suckers sneak up on you.

message 2616: by Carol (new)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments A lot of the Xmas foods involve alcohol- brandy to 'feed'( there's a euphemistic term for you!) the Xmas cake or to put in the pudding. Davenport plums soaked in vodka seem very much part of the tradition!

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Man-oh-man! We're having a major rain storm here today. Glad my crown came in the other day and the dentist put it in early, instead of my having to go out in the weather today.

I'll stay cozy and warm inside with a good book... and maybe a movie.

Sounds like a plan -- and one I wish I could join in on instead of working. At least the sun is finally starting to peak out today. We've had overcast skies all week.

Sounds like the perfect day Lisa:) I'll be staying in today myself.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Thanks, ladies! I will.

message 2623: by Jonel (new)

Jonel We had a wicked snowstorm here. I hope they have the roads cleaned up by the am. I'm currently enjoying a rare night of freedom, having a nice glass of wine and pretending to write a few reviews.

message 2624: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Pretending? LOL!

message 2625: by Jonel (new)

Jonel Well, it was more playing of FB & Goodreads then actually writing reviews for the most part. haha. But the goal was to get them done.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments :o)

Carol Dobson | 402 comments Very stormy and windy here last night and this morning there were 8 ships sheltering in the bay. Torquay faces east, and is in a very large bay, so it is a very safe anchorage in a southwesterly.

Haha! I did get all of them done last night.

Impressive, Jonel! And congrats on that. :o)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments BTW, we go more rain yesterday than any in 52 years! I haven't checked yet, but we were headed towards the list of top 10 days in a hundred years.

message 2631: by Jonel (new)

Jonel Wow! That's a lot of rain

message 2632: by Jonel (new)

Jonel So... I'm a dog person. I have nothing against high maintenance dogs. I have a husky, greyhound cross who is hyperactive and requires a great deal of attention and patience. That said..... The new dog that moved in across the hall will be the death of me. It does nothing but bark. It's driving my absolutely batty.

message 2633: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments That's a lot of rain!!!

Jonel, maybe give it time to acclimate.

message 2634: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Sorry, Jonel. Maybe slip a list of "How to Get Your Dog to Stop Barking" under their door?

Is the dog barking because the owner is not there? Our dog always did that, and so does that of our neighbor.

message 2636: by Lizzie (new)

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments My dog just barks at people/cats/other dogs walking by the street. Since having a dog I realized that there are not a lot of dog people around :p.

message 2637: by Jonel (new)

Jonel Unfortunately this dog just barks. Incessantly. It's almost better when the dog is home alone. He doesn't get screamed at then, and stops after about 10 mins.

So, in all honestly.... The root of my issue isn't the barking dog. It's the lack of training and attention from the owners. He's constantly getting screamed at (which is even more aggravating than the barking, lol) and the guy is big enough that he can pick up and relocate the lab so the dog knows nothing. Then the dog gets screamed at again and stuck in his crate for being a dog and getting excited when another dog is around.

Ok. Rant over. Just needed to get it off my chest.

message 2638: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments If someone screams at a barking dog the dog just barks more. They think the human is barking along with them. Seriously, Jonel, put a "How to Get Your Dog to Stop Barking" pamphlet under their door anonymously.

message 2639: by Jonel (new)

Jonel It is quite tempting.

message 2640: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Sharpe (abigailsharpe) | 2010 comments LK, I did not know that!

message 2641: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Abigail wrote: "LK, I did not know that!"

So the experts say. Also, they tell you - conversely - to teach your dog to "speak" on command, and then to teach them the "quite" command. (With a food reward.) That way, when they bark when you don't want them to, you can give them the "quite" command.

message 2642: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments It goes without saying that you should check out why the dog is barking. My first husband used to beat the dog (yes, a major reason why I left) when he barked; however, someone was stealing the evergreen tree out of the front yard at the time... duh!

message 2643: by Susanne (new)

Susanne (susannemccarthy) | 13 comments I've tried everything with my lunatic Border Terrier - and I've had dogs for many years. We live near the zoo, and the strange noises set her off. Anyone walking past the house, a leaf blowing... We ALWAYS stop her instantly and fetch her indoors, but she doesn't learn. On her walks, she just goes ballistic if a human or dog is in sight. I think she may have mild brain damage.

message 2644: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments She sounds a little hyper. All those zoo smells must drive her nuts, Susanne.

Last night was fabulous - cold, but not too windy. We're really lucky living down here. I was at a Christmas do at Living Coasts, and with all the lights around the bay it looked beautiful.

Hi Susanne. It sounds like you are also in Torquay. Living Coasts is very interesting, isn't it?
We are extremely lucky to live in such a beautiful place. I walk a lot, and so am very fortunate there is such a long stretch of coast which has not been developed on, here actually within the town.

Susanne (susannemccarthy) | 13 comments Hi Carol - yes, I live in Torbay too, near the Zoo. I love it here. I love that there are so many beaches to chose from, all different to each other, and that the sea can be so different on different days - usually so blue and tranquil, but then when you get a good head of storm out in the channel it can let fly with twenty-foot waves crashing over the sea wall. I get claustrophobic now if I'm inland for more than a day or two!
