Squirrels are such fun to watch. I love the ones at my acupuncturist. There are large oak trees all intertwined and they jump all around.

Heather L (wordtrix) I used to enjoy the antics of our squirrels -- until the little buggers took out my bean plants. Left them alone for two whole months, then attcked three times in five days. >:-(

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments I don't have many squirrels, if any, in my yard. They live around us but for whatever reason, they don't like us. I guess we don't have the right trees for them.

Oh, dear!

My mother was a wonderful gardener and then they retired to the desert. She nursed along some cherry tomato plants one late spring. Babied them until she got one lone little cherry tomato. Then, just as it got ripe for picking, a little chipmunk came along and stole it away while she was washing the dishes at the kitchen sink. LOL!

message 2059: by Heather L (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Oh, don't get me started on the chipmunks, either, LOL.

I was at a friend's house over Labor Day weekend. We were sitting out on the patio reading and watching the birds at the feeders when we saw a chipmunk streak across the edge of the garden, scurry up the pole and right into the feeder. And I mean inside the feeder.

There was a small gap between the plexiglas and hinged roof where he was getting in. Note the past tense. I found something to close the gap so he could no longer crawl inside with the food. Of course, that didn't keep him from sitting in one of the feeder trays, so she had to get a baffle to go under the feeder last weekend.

Squirrels and chipmunks can be cute, but not when they're destroying your plants or stealing all the bird food.

Lizzie (lizzierw) | 2533 comments I wish I had chickmunks where I live. Sadly we don't have any in the Uk. Just badgers, foxes and deer though.

We have all of those in the neighborhood, too, as well as coyote, groundhogs, raccoons, skunks, wild turkeys, hawks, owls, ducks, geese, sandhill cranes, muskrats, an over-abundance of bunnies, and who knows what else.

You'd think with all this wildlife that I live in the country, but no. I'm actually in the city, but within walking distance of several nature preserves. The wild turkeys roam neighborhood streets throughout the year and, though I haven't actually seen deer on my street, I did find hoof prints outside my window once and have seen them in the Arboretum. I've seen a lot of groundhogs and rabbits along the nearby bike path this summer, which is also where I saw the muskrat, and the hawks are frequently seen soaring over our neighborhood.

The number of predators in the area, especially hawks and coyotes, makes me wonder what is wrong with small dog owners (such as my neighbors) who allow their pets out unattended, especially early morning and late at night.

A red-tail hawk may not look that big when you see him up in the sky, but one once landed a few yards in front of me while I was out walking and let me tell you -- a full grown hawk is HUGE. A male red-tail is 18–24 inches (45–60 cm), and the female slightly larger. The coopers hawk is a bit smaller, 14-18 inches high. Though they tend to prefer rodents (mice, voles, chipmunks and squirrels), they can carry twice their body weight. If they're hungry enough, your little chihuahua or miniature whatever looks like just another tasty rabbit.

Uh-huh, you would take his side, LOL. You'd think his adventure with the CATS would have traumitized him enough to drive him away, but no. Maybe he feels safe so long as he stays out of the house and garage. Yeah, he learned that lesson the hard way, and was lucky to live to tell the tale. ☺

Did the poor little dude get trapped in the garage?

message 2067: by Heather L (last edited Sep 10, 2014 10:11AM) (new)

Heather L (wordtrix) Lisa Kay: Apparently, he got into the garage, then later when friends were carrying stuff into the house from the garage he followed them in. He was in the house all night without my friend knowing it, only discovering it in the morning, when the cats chased him through the living room. I told her she was lucky they didn't bring him to bed for her. I don't know why she wasn't amused by the thought of such a gift... :-D

You have far more wild life in the US than we do in the UK. I don't think it's just because you're a much bigger country, although that obviously plays a part. Have seen a groundhog since being here on holiday, which was quite exciting for me.

My son lived in San Francisco for five and a half years and loved it. I was always a bit worried for him though because of the earthquake threat there. He never bothered about it though. I think things often seem worse from afar.

One would think us here in Cali would be more worried about it. But there are other things that actively take up our attention and minds that we don't think about it much (at least I don't). Especially right now, I think we're more preoccupied with the heat wave and the wildfires.

Same here. In fact, we set new record low highs twice last week. I do not like November temps in September. At least we had nice weather yesterday. I spent the afternoon on a guided walk at the Arboretum. Lots of falls flowers in bloom, and we saw several wild turkeys.

Delighted at the outcome.

Carol Dobson | 402 comments I used to live in Dundee, just north of Edinburgh, in the east. On the west coast many people still speak Gaelic. After living there I moved to Aberystwyth in Wales where people speak Welsh, another Celtic language. My grandmother was a Welsh-speaker, but unfortunately I only ever managed a few words.
