Sarah Jacquie I just took the sneak peak over at amazon and noticed each page there had illustrations. Is the majority of the book like that or just the beginning? I've very interested to read this, but just curious. It won't take away whether I'll read it or not, I can see pros either way! Thanks! =)

Gokce G I don't know if you still wonder, but just in case, this is not a graphic novel. Yes, there are some illustrations, but they're there at the beginning of every chapter to give you an idea. At least this was the case in the one I read! :)

It is not a graphic novel but there are illustration.

Don't worry, the book is not flooded with drawings. You can expect at least 2-3 illustrations for each chapter.

Paula I like the illustrations. They give me an idea as to how Gaiman views his characters. I really enjoyed 'The Graveyard'. Neil Gaiman sends my brain in a different direction then the usual books. My mom and I used to walk through a very large cemetary for exercise. The graveyard was safe, there was little traffic, and the scenery was eye catching. The hills were a challenge.

Jamie Karin wrote: "He says he wrote this when they lived next to a cemetary and their little boy rode his trycicle there because it was much safer than the sidewalk. Here in Denver people go jogging in the cemetary al..."

When I lived in Knoxville, we used to go for bike rides in a re-purposed insane asylum. Here in LA, they show old movies at the Hollywood cemetery in the summertime. Of course, cemeteries in California aren't nearly as cool as those in older cities. But then, other cities don't encourage you to bring a picnic and smoke weed in the cemetery.

Its just in the first part.

Me too. It didn't strike me as a novel either let alone a graphic novel.Almost designated as a children's book except for the bloody beginning.

Willi The book, to me, was interesting to say the very least. It was very unique and different.I did enjoy it, but its not the type of book that I usually chooses. Its not a "cannot put down" type of book, but good nonetheless.

How is it not a children's book? It was the Newbery Medal winner in 2009, and that is a children's fiction award.

Willi Really???I had no idea. The scary beginning and the total idea of the man Jack stabbing Bod's family to death was not a great theme for children and if my kids were small, I would have never let them read it.Nightmare City!!

Anki Admittedly, "literature for children" is somewhat of a broad category. In general most of the Newbery Award books I've come across have a target audience of 10 and up, though some can be read at an earlier age.

The Graveyard Book seems to hit on the higher end of the spectrum. I probably wouldn't give it to most young children because there is such a high creepy factor, but it would really depend on the child.

Nia Its an amazing read....i think that it should become a graphic novel.

Pandora Not in my library. It is a children's book. We go up to the seventh grade in the children's department. A bit high but, it works. Many of the kids from fourth grade up want scary books. So, I am always searching for something else besides Goosebumps.

Well, Harry Potter starts with a double murder and attempted infanticide, doesn't it? I think kids are tougher than we give them credit for. ;) Sometimes I look back at things I used to read when I was younger and think, "how was this ever suitable for that age?" but it went right over my head at the time. I'd agree it's okay for 10+.

Carol NOT WHAT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE. SEEMED LIKE A CHILDRENS BOOK. GAVE IT TO MY GRANDKIDS THEY LIKE THAT KIND OF STUFF.

Caleb Blake I loved this book.

It was strange but as I read through it there was something familiar about it - something just out of reach.

Then when I read the author's comments at the back of the book owing a debt of gratitude to Rudyard Kipling and The Jungle Book it dawned on me. OK, I was a bit slow.

Once I read that, it all fell into place.

Will IV Paula wrote: "I like the illustrations. They give me an idea as to how Gaiman views his characters..."

Well actually, Gaiman doesn't draw the illustrations, they are Dave McKean's (who Gaiman has worked with in the past) work, therefore they are from his imagination, not Neil's.

Nik No, it is not. Although Gaiman should create a graphic novel version of this.

Stephen Kind of a self evident answer but... I just listened to the audio book version, read by the author himself and 1) it was great and 2) there were no illustrations.

jennyreadit It will be interesting to see how Disney interprets this.

Penny Sarah wrote: "I just took the sneak peak over at amazon and noticed each page there had illustrations. Is the majority of the book like that or just the beginning? I've very interested to read this, but just cur..."

There are some illustrations in the book, but I think it is because it is basically a childrens book, and that is the kind of thing you will find in a childrens story. However it is a very good little book and I enjoyed it immensley, there is plenty of story to get stuck into, not a graphic novel at all.

Pandora Since the term graphic novel has been taken by the comic books I use the term illustrated novel. There are other novels that use pictures such as Hugo Cabrnet, Wonderstruck, Butterfingers etc. It is a way to try to hook non readers onto reading.

Inês its not a graphic novel, its like a tale for children a short novel. it is written. i don't know if yours have pictures to ilustrate each chapter but mine (the portuguese version) has.

and i think they are going to do a movie out of this

Julia No it is a Newberry Award Winning Book

Elena It is sort of a graphic novel, but I won't consider it to be. It is mainly a chapter book with some pictures involved. Usually graphic novels have talk bubbles and boxes surrounding the pictures. I would consider this book a chapter book with some pictures.

Suzanne Capitano This is not a graphic novel, it does have a few illustrations, ghostly sketches really, and while a quick read this authors style and viewpoints are quite refreshing considering it is a subject that has been....done to death.
