Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 306 comments LOL oh my gosh. I've had a whole list going all year and I cannot believe I just skipped right over the Spring and thought it was the summer challenge. LOL. WOW. Can I use the crazy snow and my cabin fever as an excuse?!?

message 102: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Definitely. Stupid blizzards >_< I didn't even bother to dig out my car today. Seems like every time I do, we just get more snow.

I really like this idea!

Bridgit | 505 comments Vernal Equinox - An important date in the occult community. Read something with a paranormal, witchcraft, occult or supernatural plot.

message 105: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 505 comments In Annapolis, Maryland, USA, boatyard employees and sailboat owners celebrate the spring equinox with the Burning Of The Socks festival. Traditionally, the boating community wears socks only during the winter. These are burned at the approach of warmer weather, which brings more customers and work to the area. Officially, nobody then wears socks until the next equinox

So... read something with an article of clothing in the title.

message 106: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 505 comments And on a related note - Beltane is celebrated on May 1 - read a book about one of the cultures that celebrated Beltane - Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Cornish, Manx, Breton, Celtic/Gaelic.

Last one for now - read a book that takes place in a country of your ancestry. I am Polish, Irish and Norwegian, so I could read something from one of those countries.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I am so excited for March to get here. I can't wait to read the new challenges!

Naptown! Worldwide! Great idea, Bridgit.

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments I am awed by the ideas that everyone has come up with, however, I have a few suggestions of my own.

1) Read a book published in the year you were born.
2) In honor of the Indianapolis 500 read a book about racing or a book with more than 500 pages.
3) In honor of the Kentucky Derby, also known as the run for the roses, read a book with rose or another flower name in the title.

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments One more...in honor of Cinco de Mayo, read a book by a Latin American author or set in a Latin American country.

message 112: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) When will the list come out? I didn't do the winter challenge so I am excited for this one.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 3041 comments The offical start of the Spring challenge is March 1.

message 114: by Beth F (new)

Beth F | 669 comments I can't recall seeing a post where Cynthia said when she'd release the list but it usually comes out around 2 weeks before the start date, give or take. This is based on my observations of the past 5 challenges.

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments Someone suggested a book about hobbies. I am a beginning quilter and have several fiction books on the subject. I think that one would be great!

message 118: by Emily (new)

Emily | 130 comments Another Spring Cleaning idea - read a book that you've started before but never finished (a book which you would need to pick up and read from the start to the finish rather than jumping in mid-way).

Hans Christian Andersen and William Shakespeare were both born in April - perhaps a task that has us read either works by these two or works inspired by their work?

Similarly for a three book task we could read a book written by an author born in each of the three months for the challenge.

For the Oscars - read a book that was adapted into a screenplay and received a nomination for adapted screenplay (such an amazing list of possibilities!)

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments May is National Mental Health Month. Read a book featuring an individual with a mental or neurological disorder.

For Easter, read a book with the word "faith" in the title.

message 120: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2344 comments Memorial Day here in the USA is May 31. Related to that day, read a book (fiction or non-fiction) about the costs of war.

Amazon.com sent me an advertisement for "Uncommon Perspectives: lives changed by War" http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html... . I would include Cruel World: The Children of Europe in the Nazi Web . For fiction I'd choose books like Skeletons at the Feast or The German Woman .

If "the costs of war" is too restrictive, open it up to War in general.

Rachael | 21 comments I'm doing it too! I can't wait!

message 124: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments I check at lease once a day. I am trying to figure out what to read now and what to save for later.

But, honestly, if the challenge is as big as the last one, I may not be able to do it. I am still back-logged from that one! I may go on the every-other-challenge plan.

We'll see. I'm probably kidding myself and will start a list as soon Cynthia posts the first challenge list!

message 125: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) I'm with ya. I'm looking through the ideas and seeing if I have books that will line up with the suggestions. I think I will be happy to obtain a couple hundred points. I know I won't finish but it's still fun to try.

message 126: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1332 comments I'm still working on the list - I had to work this weekend so I didn't get as much done as I planned - I hope to have it up by Wednesday of this week.

Melissa | 30 comments Hi, I'm not sure if something like this has been posted but I'll throw it into the mix:

Each year April 22nd (Earth Day) marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day is a day of celebration that focuses on ecology, conservation, and protection of our environment. This year Earth Day 2010 (April 22nd) is the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day: Read a book (either fiction or non-fiction) that has to do with the Planet Earth and the environment (environmental disasters, the saving of Planet Earth, the destruction of Planet Earth, conservation, etc.).

Book Ideas: The Parable of the Sower, The Road, An Inconvenient Truth, The Urban Homestead: Your Guide to Self-sufficient Living in the Heart of the City

I can't wait for the Spring CHallenge:) - Melissa

Sandie (chocdrop) | 212 comments March 27th is the day that Earth Hour 2010 will take place. Everyone around the world is encouraged to turn all lights off for one hour starting at 8.30pm (local time) to raise awareness of climate change issues.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FclcMf...

To support Earth Hour, read a book that has the word "light" in the title and switch off your lights for the hour.

message 133: by Potjy (new)

Potjy | 50 comments Also inspired by spring cleaning: found a thing in your house/room that should be thrown/given away, and read a book that related "in some ways" to that object. You can be overly creative and play the six-degree-of-separation game, just explain it with the task posted. (Or if you're a totally tidy person *sighs*, you can use things you already threw away.)

message 134: by Liz (new)

Liz I note it's late but a couple of new suggestions.
*Read a book by an author who was born in March, April or May.
*March is the month of March madness. Read a book about your favorite sport.
*For students or families with kids in school its the time of year for spring break. Read a book about or set in your ideal vacation destination.

Sara ♥ (saranicole) | 1114 comments Cynthia should be posting the new tasks any time now... EXCITING!!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Just as a side remark... one that we could do that doesn't fit into the calendar months but would be fun is read a book mentioned inside of another book. I have another suggestion but I will type that when I get upstairs... I am currently in the basement at my house and it is WAY too cold down here.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments One last one because I know I am probably messing up the whole work force and I apologize for that. Having said that, my idea is: March will be airing a lot of new television shows. Pick a show and read a book with one of the words in the title. For example: One show that is coming out in March is Breaking Bad... you could read a book with any form of break in the title or a word with bad in the title. The list could go on but I could not find a good list!

I actually thought of using this idea for my "finished the challenge" task, but decided against it. I looked, but I couldn't find a list of books that mention other books in them and therefore wouldn't be able to help people find books unless I just suggested books I'd already read. It would be a fun idea, though. Or doing something like, "Read a book/play and watch/read something based off of it," like reading "Taming of the Shrew" and watching "10 Things I Hate About You."

message 139: by Deirdre (new)

Deirdre Skaggs (deirdre04) | 101 comments I haven't read all the previous posts, but here's a suggestion (that hopefully hasn't been suggested yet):

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, read a book with a mostly green cover or read a book with one of the following words (or a derivation of) in the title: green, clover, shamrock, parade, Ireland, Irish, gold, lucky, pinch, kiss.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Ms Anderson wrote: "Sarah wrote: "Just as a side remark... one that we could do that doesn't fit into the calendar months but would be fun is read a book mentioned inside of another book. I have another suggestion but..."

I like the other suggestion and you're right there isn't an easy place to find books that are inside other books. I've just been reading lately and seen books inside books... just thought it was interested. Something else that came to mind is further readings which are presented in most books. But I do like the "Taming of the Shrew" and watching "10 Things I Hate About You." idea... I know there are a lot of those! If you need help you can always ask me I am always willing to help!

I sent this task idea to Donna Jo & I think it's perfectly doable, given the number of voracious readers in this group. A couple of challenges ago we had a task to read a book seen in a movie. Everyone pitched in with book sightings and there didn't seem to be a shortage of ideas.

I also think that this task is great and is doable. Some authors do a great job advertising other people's books in their own books. You could even broaden the task by allowing people to read books written by authors mentioned in other books. Some books that come to mind right away are The Time Traveler's Wife, Northanger Abbey, Twilight, Dear John. I would love to complete a task like this. I'm sure the group could come up with a great list of books.

message 143: by Ashley FL (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments It occurred to me as I was thinking of my task for the Spring Challenge that creating a task is a great way to get book ideas on a favorite topic/ genre. I had already done my task, but if I ever get to do another one, it will be something having to do with post-apocalyptic literature. There is a ton out there and I would love to get recommendations from this group!

Ashley FL | 721 comments I noticed that the three Group Challenge books are posted, so at least we can all decide on which of those to read!

message 148: by Belinda (last edited Feb 16, 2010 06:39AM) (new)

Belinda (bindyb) | 242 comments Mother's Day is in May. Read a book with the word mother or one of its forms, i.e. mom, mama, mommy in the title or a book that contains your mother's first name.

May is also a month when many graduations take place. Read a book where one of the main characters is a student or a teacher.

message 149: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Extra Credit -- Read a book and a published review of the book (by published I mean a review that, even if read online, also appeared in a printed medium -- a book of essays, a newspaper, a magazine, etc -- not a web-only review).

message 150: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 172 comments one more idea...

Read a book featured in the Goodreads email newsletter for one of the spring months (March, April, May), or read a book by one of the authors interviewed in those newsletters.
