Or the live wires that are down from the aftermath from Alfred. No one went trick or treating in CT. We are included in the 700,000 still without power, and basic necessities like water/sewer. Our house is 42 degrees so we had to leave, and are on the waiting lists for hotels in the state. There are long lines for gas, food, shelter and showers (yes I waited in line for 45 minutes to take a lukewarm shower after numerous women before me!) People are fighting at the gas tanks and police now monitor the few gas stations that have gas. Only one grocery store open --have a generator & so do some small 'mom & pop' breakfast joints who are open, making hot food. Drove to a big mall about half hour away, tons of people, no where to sit but it is warm. People as far as Alabama have come to help restore power. The state estimates that majority of power will be restored by Sunday evening. We will be last because the tree took the wires off the house. We have been out since Saturday. Honestly it is exhausting.

Sorry to hear that Carol. Glad you could get a connection to the Internet!

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 1140 comments It's amazing how it puts everything in perspective.
In a way what happened really connected us with others.

The first morning after the storm no one had cell service, and of course not the house phone, so we walked outside and everyone starting coming out of their houses to talk and share what happened in our yards and in the streets, checking out the damage. Honestly I haven't seen some of my neighbors for at least 6 months. Or when you get in a breakfast place and they bring you to a table for 4 and they have you sit with another couple you never met and you share your stories. Even at the gas stations, there are people monitoring the cars and you talk while you wait for your turn. It was truly amazing because everyone was so relaxed to talk about how really scary the storm was and because you couldn't call family/friends on the cell phone, everyone just started talking to each other, which is not common in New England. But it was also challenging because we had to drive to our parents houses to make sure they were ok since we couldn't reach them by phone.

Dvora Treisman Carol, I don't live in the US and don't keep up on all the news. I had no idea. I hope by now things have calmed down and services have come back on and you can get on with it. It is interesting how such events can bring people closer together. We have become a very alienated society. I prefer the era when people sat on their front porches and said hi to other neighbors who were walking by than our own times when if we're outdoors at all, it is in the privacy of our backyards.

Carol (goodreadscomcarolann) | 1140 comments So true Dvora, if the cell phones were working we would not have seen anyone. Where I live only one area has power, most people are without. We are staying in a nearby town with my sister-in-law and family, for a total of ten adults in a 1200 square foot house with one bath! We are so grateful, they are truly the best.

Sunday night 99% will be restored but we are part of the 1% which are individual homes that need specific hook ups. I go home everyday to check up on things but nothing has changed, road blocks still up, wires down, not too many people in their homes. We need to remove spoiled food but I don't know if the city is providing street pickup like normal.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 112 comments It's situations like this that make me grateful we have a rotary phone; it was the only powered thing working when we had a horrible ice storm about 5 or 6 years ago.

Hope you get power back soon, Carol, and your sister-in-law sounds like a saint!

Dvora Treisman This isn't a comment but a question. I would like to post an image of a van Gogh painting on my blog but don't know where I can find an image that I can download. Anyone have a useful website or method they can share with me? Thanks.

Go to Google.
Search for "van gogh". (Capitalization doesn't matter.)
Click on "Images for van gogh".
Choose the one you like.
On the right, you will see a link "Full-size image".

It differs by browser, but choose an option with a name like "Copy link address". (In Chrome on a Mac, I right button click to get to this.)

Paste the URL (web address of the image) into a document somewhere to save it off.

In your blogging software, either choose an option to add an image and then paste this URL in, or, if it doesn't have one, it may let you edit as HTML, in which case you will have to write the image tag, which looks like this:
<img src="your url goes here inside the quotes" />

message 165: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Man! I've only been looking at it for about 5 minutes and yes, it IS addicting! It's fun to see the pictures of the individual artists. Just on the first page, I only identified 3-4. Now I can put a painting with a face! What a great find, Fran. Thank you!

Jim | 147 comments Fran
what a find
O'Keefe's New York paintings are my favorites and the site has so many of them and the colors, detail are wonderful.
Thanks for finding/broadcasting the site.

PS I'm so glad that there was no internet when I was a kid - I don't know if I would have done any homework or chores which would not have made my Mom or Dad too happy.

Meesh (meeshisabeast) | 1 comments Attention my fellow goodies! I REALLY NEED HELP WITH AN ART QUESTION

I need to write a 15 page paper dealing with women/feminism and Marcel Duchamp. Any suggestions on what exactly would be my thesis??

Any and all suggestions are welcome. Also if you could, provide what pieces I could talk about related to the thesis. I am so lost.

Heather | 8548 comments So the poll is over and I thank everyone who participated, voted and left comments. It gives me a little bit more of an idea on the interests of the group.

I tried to 'move up' the folders of which there was more interest. And I will open the new on that got the second-most votes.
I hope to have lots of participation in writing about books and reviews, as this will be the new folder.

Everyone is welcome to share your thoughts!

Check my book on Amazon Kindle, "Modern Art a Portrait of Mediocrity"
A quote:
"In 1917, Dadaist creation spread from Europe to the U.S. Considered one of its greatest proponents, the talented Marcel Duchamp, created his urinal bearing the signature R. Mutt, since acclaimed as a most monstrously important object of originality and artistic advance. Oddly, it has recently been discovered that the whole thing was inspired by a female friend."

Melissa Eisenmeier (carpelibrumbooks) | 27 comments How about a thread for polls and stuff? I'm bad at remembering to check the polls for all my groups because I belong to so many and have my business to run.

message 173: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Melissa, you are just awesome with your ideas. I just commented on your other one. This is a great idea, too because even though I invite people to participate in the poll, maybe people forget about it or can't get to it at the time, or for other reasons. I will start a folder for anyone who creates a poll to tell the group on the main page that the poll is there. They can state what it is regarding if they choose, also. I'll do that next. Along with your other great idea! One question though, what do you mean by "and stuff". I'm sorry if I can't think of what that would be, maybe my brain is dragging today. Would you mind expounding on what you're thinking?

While we are discussing this, I saw that Leah posted a poll today. I don't know who knows about this yet because I didn't get an invite but found it almost by accident. She asked a good question and I am interested in people's answers. I invite everyone to check it out!

message 174: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments Hi all I would probably suggest a thread for 'what are you currently reading' or 'post your reviews here' I just finished a book called Lisette's List by Susan Vreeland and I reviewed it, I love to share reviews and that sometimes sparks discussion about the book or topic....

message 175: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Hi Deborah!

I love that idea. And since this group has been around for several years, I had never had that thought until this year. But we have sort of opened up a topic for just that. I hope the description makes sense. But see under Monthly Challenge. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

It is basically where we challenge ourselves to read so many books per year and I will create a thread every month where we can discuss what we want to read that month, what we are currently reading, or the books we finished during that month and we can post our reviews there for others to read and discuss.

So for example, under the Discussion thread there is a thread just labeled Your Challenge for January 2017 https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
and there you can enlighten us on your book you just finished. I would love to read your review!

The poll I created to start this topic was a 'challenge' for ourselves to see how many books we can read in a year. This is why I will create the thread for each month so we can discuss our books.

If you want to see the original poll, just look under polls and it is the latest one.

Thank you for the idea! If I hadn't thought of it just recently, you would have and we'd have that covered. So thank you! I look forward to your review.

message 176: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Oh and Deborah, I want to add...we had a topic similar to this before called Book Suggestions and Reviews but it didn't get much response. You can post there if you would like to also. Or, you can post both places! It's up to you.

message 177: by AJ (last edited Jun 12, 2017 08:51PM) (new)

AJ There's been some members unsure how to post pictures in the group. It's pretty easy, just go "photos" under the top left of this page, click "add a photo" browser to the location on your computer, fill in the fields as desire and upload.

Once your photo appears in the gallery you can right click on it and choose "copy image location"

Then to post it in a topic (if you want it to show up rather than a text link) just add this code:

< img src="past_the_image_link_you_just_copied_here" width="40" height="100" alt="description"/>

For additional reference see the link (some html is ok) right above every comment field in a discussion.

EDIT: make sure there are no spaces in the begining and ending brackets < >

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments Misc. comment; I just read a pretty good review relating to art in Bali.
The review is for a book, but it makes a pretty good concise mention of art in Bali. It has been years since I was there, but I was thoroughly impressed and amazed at how it had been so influential to European art.

That sounds really good, Deborah! Thank you for introducing that book. Honestly, I've never thought about art in Bali but now that you mention it, I bought online a couple of abstract wooden statues from Bali. I love them!

So, you haven't read the book yet but did read a good review. Looking at the link you posted, it says it's only 288 pages. I wonder if anyone would be interested in reading that as a group book read? I think I'll ask. Thank you!

message 180: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 136 comments I never thought of Bali a center for art either until I went there. Then, in a mountain town called Ubud, I went to an art gallery not expecting much to be honest. There were all these pictures by well known European artists, which blew me away. Also heaps of artwork by their Balinese protegees showing a fascinating fusion of Balinese traditional and European style. It was so surprising.

message 181: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments I’m not putting this one under “comments from the moderator” because this has nothing to do with me being the moderator.

But I am being a bit childish for a second: I dibs posting more introduction to Mehoffer in the folder “Introduce an artist and/or works”!

I just have to get to my PC to post anything. I have another idea, too but again need my PC. I really wish I had a smarter phone!

Dan Hill | 5 comments Quite by chance, I discovered a podcast platform devoted entirely to interviews of quality authors on a wide, wide range of topics, including art. It's called the New Books Network and attracts about 1.3 million downloads a month. A sleeping giant, and a great resource. I have a podcast on the platform now, "Dan Hill's EQ Spotlight" that will often cover art. But either way, check it out. You'll be as delighted as I was to find this resource!

Thank you for this information, Dan. I'm going to check it out! I'm interested not only in art, but a myriad of other subjects so I'm sure I could find plenty of things to enjoy.
Congratulations on having your own podcast on the platform, too!

Dan Hill | 5 comments I host a podcast on the New Books Network called "Dan Hill's EQ Spotlight." NBN draws about 1.3 million downloads monthly, and my show looks at role of emotions in behavior, personalities, outcomes. So if the group ever has suggestions for a new book (within last 2 years) whose author I might want to interview in depth let me know. I minored in art history, and last year published First Blush: People's Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art and have recently interviewed the author of a book on architecture, for instance. Sincerely, Dan Hill, PhD
