This is a new show on The History Channel investigates some of the world's most fascinating, iconic, mythic and tyrannical leaders. Uses the latest historical discoveries, forensic science tests, archaeological finds, analysis of torture instruments, and battlefield dynamics to shed light on these leaders and his or her methods. Each episode also features a specially designed psycho-meter scale to compare and contrast behavior.

So far the show has depicted Atilla the Hun, Genghis Khan, Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, Caligula, Hannibal, Nero, and Alexander the Great.

It's not entirely accurate in my eyes but still a really good watch.

Christine (chrisarrow) It's one of History's 300 inspired shows. Like Battles B.C. It's not bad, but it's no Engineering An Empire.

Well, at least they're taking a break from showing Ice Truckers 24/7.

ITA, tho. Engineering an Empire was an excellent show. I think one of my college profs popped up on the Roman episode. :-)

Karla, LMAO! I know right? The networks are getting ridiculous with all the "reality shows". Since the show is between seasons right now I am trying to find some online free viewing links for you guys.

Sounds good Colleen. I will have to check this one out.

I'm going to have to look into Engineering an Empire. I missed that one.

I really enjoyed the one on Cleopatra seeing as I have been reading MoC. Caesar was good too, people forget how horrible he really was. Then of course the ones on mother-lover Nero and sister-lover Caligula were like a juicy gossipy soap opera that happened to be true.

I was wondering yesterday, does anyone else think that maybe the term "motherf***er" came about because that is literally what Nero was? I am not trying to be absurd, just saying.

Colleen - LMAO. That sounds like the type of question that I would ask!

I've got my DVR set to record the series. Haven't seen it yet but I've got Hannibal waiting for me downstairs. Eek... that sounded like a scary prospect!

LOL, Jennifer. Lyn, it just popped into my head the other day and made me laugh but I can imagine that being the origin. Finding that out about Nero then calling him a mf; it's both true and insulting in Nero's case! Hahaha... gross.

And wasn't Engineering an Empire hosted by Peter Weller? I remember being gobsmacked that Robocop was a degreed history nerd. Every actor needs a backup career. :D

Speaking of turgid soap operas, anyone remember the early 80s mini-series "A.D."? History Channel re-ran that back when I was in college (mid-90s), and I ate up every single cheesy minute of it.

Kimberly (kimberly_b) I saw the Julius Caesar episode about a month or two ago and it was pretty good. As Colleen said, I'm not entirely sure how accurate it was, but it was pretty interesting. The show suggested that lead poisoning could have been pretty rampant back then due to the process they used to make wine. Since wine was obviously consumed A LOT, there was a large potential for exposure. They were basically suggesting that some of the leaders of the time could have acted even crazier due to lead poisoning. Interesting theory.

Colleen (nightoleander) | 345 comments Mod
Yeah, that was primarily in the Caligula one as well. The amount of lead consumed in his time would kill a person nowadays so they must have built up tolerances. They did make very strong wine back then so it was always watered down with water, fruit juice, and flavored additionally with spices.

The reason I cite innaccuracy is specifically in the Cleopatra one they leave out one of Cleopatra's sisters entirely. They also claim she murdered her youngest brother when there seems to be more evidence he died from disease, such as TB.

OK - I cannot find this show on my cable. Is it called Ancients Behaving Badly, or something else?

Apparently so, because the Caligula episode in the History Channel store has it as the main title. Don't see it on the upcoming schedule, however....

Christine (chrisarrow) They'll show it again, eventually. If you have History International, check that to. It tends to have more history and less reality.

Awww, you are welcome Lyn! I was just worn out from a long week with not a lot of sleep and my dog's summer coat is coming in so extra allergies.

Enough about me though, I have the Caesar link:

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 227 comments A refreshing development for the History Channel - history programming that is not about the Nazis or Nostradamus! (Or history programming at all, for that matter. I swear to God I saw listed a "Modern Marvels" episode that was about "water.")

On a side note, I was amused to see that one of the last episodes of The Jay Leno Show got lower ratings than whatever was on The History Channel at the time!

Christine (chrisarrow) I just want reality shows to go away. (Okay, not all of them. I like Deadliest Catch, but can anyone explain to me how Pawn Stars is History? Please.)

But there is way too much reality programming. A&E use to be a good channel. I haven't watched it in years. TLC use to be a good channel. I haven't watched it years.

Discovery is still hanging in there, sorta. At least with digital cable you get six different Discovery channels so you can get some good programming. I watch HIstory INternational more than I watch the regular History channel though.

I actually watched Pawn Stars the other day. It was not good and you`re right Chris... not history. As far as ABB I`ve see Hannibal and Genhis Khan... both were really good shows and really bad men!

message 22: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Have you seen the movie Mongol? You need to see it.

Nope... what`s it about?

message 24: by Christine (new)

Christine (chrisarrow) Its about Genghis Khan. Its a little slow in places, but it is good.
