Sarah | 13814 comments So I just thought I'd share that I had a Magic Hat Vinyl Lager tonight. I'm not the hugest Magic Hat fan or lager fan for that matter, but that was a tasty beer.

It has a cute promo too:

smetchie | 4034 comments Gah! They had these at a party I went to on Sunday but I had a hangover and was scared of it. I'm picking up a 6-pack tomorrow!

message 3: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Vinyl?

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yup. Spring seasonal.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Magic Hat is pretty good.

Just bought a big bottle of Trader Joe's brown ale, similar to a Trappist Monk ale. Curious to see how good it is.

janine | 7709 comments what's the green fairy doing in a beer add? is she lost?

message 7: by Melinda (new)

Melinda (missmelinda) I've never heard of Magic Hat before, but I definitely will keep my eye out for it. I love Spring and I love beer. I especially love sitting on a porch in the Spring with a good beer. And maybe some guacamole and chips.

Yum.

message 8: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Oh I can't wait for spring!

message 9: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments It does seem kind of cruel to be drinking a spring seasonal in a wool sweater waiting for snow. Can the green fairy do something about that, or is she just here to DJ?

message 10: by smetchie (last edited Feb 03, 2010 06:44PM) (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I finally got a hold of some and I like it! I couldn't find it alone so I had to get the whole "Spring Fever" 12-pack with an assortment. Poor me. :)

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Are there any other highlights in the assortment?

message 12: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Oh yeah! My favorite is the "#9 Not Quite Pale Ale".
http://www.magichat.net/springfever/beer
But the label isn't all sweet and pastel-springy like the "Vinyl Lager." The only other one I've tried so far is the "Odd Notion Spring" which was perfectly fine but nothing to write home about. I'm starting to wonder if there are beers I don't like. Anyway, thanks for the tip Sarah Pi! I hope my 12 pack lasts me through the snow storm this weekend.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Gretchen, as you try more specialty beers, I would be surprised if you didn't find beers that you don't like.

I thought I liked most any beer until I tried an IPA, and I have yet to find one I like.

message 14: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Ok, well there is an IPA in my assortment so I'll let you know.

message 15: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Jim, we can be drinking buddies. IPA is also my least favorite beer.

message 16: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Just about every city has its own microbrewery with some interesting craft-type beers. I really enjoy them all. A couple of weeks ago I was in La Grande, OR. As small as that town is, they had a brewery/restaurant. If I had been there another day longer, I would have checked it out.

IPA doesn't do it for me, either. I've gotten to like a pretty sharp bite to my beer. Widmer Drop Top Amber in Portland is one of my current faves.

Sarah Pi wrote: "Jim, we can be drinking buddies. IPA is also my least favorite beer. "

But obviously we can't watch movies together.

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Well, not District 9 in any case.

Hmmmm. What could Sarah 72 and Jim do that does involve beer and doesn't involve film?

::draws a blank::

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Darts, Billiards, any number of things, come on Sally you're not trying.

message 21: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Scrabble?

message 22: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Play some tunes?

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

You're on Bun. I'm only good for a couple of games, then I've usually had too much aiming fluid to be very accurate. I still hit the board, just can't hit the doubles and triples as well.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

301 works.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

OK, go first.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Double in double out. I'm about 2" up and to the right of the bull, are you closer?

message 27: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments I finally got to the IPA. Didn't like it. Drank about half of it and then stopped.

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Gretchen wrote: "I finally got to the IPA. Didn't like it. Drank about half of it and then stopped."

Welcome to the Don't Like IPA Club Gretchen, your certificate and t-shirt should be arriving soon.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

I got a 1, 13 & 4 but no doubles, your turn Bun.

message 30: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I had a tall happy hour glass of green apple cider last night... it was called "Amber." That's all. It was good. It was also the first drink of alcohol I've had in a reeeaaally, really long time. I was a wee bit tipsy.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Gretchen wrote: "I finally got to the IPA. Didn't like it. Drank about half of it and then stopped."

Did you pour the remaining liquid in the sink or did someone else drink it? I feel guilty half-finishing beers.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Single 20, double 4, single 13.

In, score is 280.

message 33: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Poured it in the sink, RA. It was the end of the night and I shouldn't have been drinking any more anyway so it's a good thing I didn't like it.

message 34: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Were you this drunk, Gretchen?

Please stop talking so loud and just let me sleep
I ain't in nobody's way they can just step over me
Well I think I'll just stay right down here on this floor
Cause if I get back up I'll only fall down some more

(I'm sorry, people. You're going to have to put up with me quoting Lucero lyrics for the foreseeable future. Blame Gretchen.)

message 35: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments Not that drunk. We've all been there, though. That's why I love that song. It perfectly captures that feeling when you're so drunk the bathroom floor seems like the most wonderful place to lie down for a nap. So comfy.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
And so cool. I love the coolness of the bathroom linoleum when all you want to do is stop spinning.

message 37: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments We got Shiner Bock into the bar, so I got to have a Shiner with my dinner last night. Hooray! They haven't sent a cool tap handle yet though.

message 38: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments When you mentioned this in another thread last week I thought to myself: "have I ever had a Shiner Bock? It sounds familiar..." so I went out and bought a six pack. Delicious!! Thanks for that.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yay! You're welcome.

message 40: by Félix (last edited Apr 26, 2010 04:33AM) (new)

Félix (habitseven) Shiner Bock is loverly.

Sarah | 13814 comments Heidi wrote: "Has anyone in this group ever been to ShinerFest in Austin?"

Not me. As I recall (dimly) the last time I was there was St. Patrick's Day 2003. Or possibly Mardi Gras. I remember margaritas, and Shiner, and three different bars. I remember meeting that homeless guy who runs for office, and sneaking into the capitol building thinking we weren't supposed to be there but then realizing it was open to the public. Strangely, I don't remember PLAYING, though I know I was on tour.

I bought a six of Magic Hat about a month ago, but I can't remember the type. It had a subtle cherry or raspberry taste to it. I didn't really care for it. Any suggestions for which type of Magic Hat to try next?

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Never heard of it Clark, is it a local brew?

message 46: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments You probably had the #9. It's kinda fruity.

message 47: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I dislike the #9, though a lot of people like it. I had kind of written off Magic Hat until I tried the Vinyl Lager, which I really liked (strangely enough, since I'm not a lager fan). I tried to get it into the bar but it's already gone.

Now to decide what to get for late spring/early summer. We need something lighter. Maybe a white ale..

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

Heidi wrote, Has anyone in this group ever been to ShinerFest in Austin?

No, but I worked with a guy from Austin who bragged about it all the time, as if it was the land of milk and honey. Which reminds me, that dude, all he ever drank was Shiner and Dr. Pepper, and smoked like a freight train. Plus, he was a trustafarian: he played me an answering machine message where his mom called to tell him she checked his bank account, and because it was running a little low, she thought she'd be nice and add an extra $2000 to the account.

Un-fucking-believable.

message 49: by smetchie (new)

smetchie | 4034 comments all he ever drank was Shiner and Dr. Pepper

separately, right?? Not together.

message 50: by [deleted user] (new)

I think he'd shotgun the two.

Another story: he whined one weekend about not having anything in the fridge to eat. So he went to the grocery store and bought himself 2 12-packs of Shiner, a case of Dr. Pepper and a carton of Marlboros. And then bitched Monday morning about being ridiculously hungry.

Dude was a straight-up redneck.
