Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments I am not going to do A-Z, just trying to see if I can beat my 50 books in a year that I did in 2008-2009 (I started in March so I went to March of the next year).
One down so far, currently being bogged down by the gigantor that is The Memoirs of Cleopatra.

Hi Colleen. Thanks for the invite. Looks like a great group. Still in the PC handicapped lane but am able to do some online still.

I just finished Cleopatra I think about the same time even. giggle. That made book #7 so far for this year for me (Cleo and one other I had started last year but I only count them in the year I finish them.)

message 8: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments Thanks for inviting me too, Colleen!!! Still haven't finished Cleo. I'm proud of you and Wen for finishing it!

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments You are welcome everybody! Aly, thanks to echo the words of someone in History of Royals group, I feel like I should have my own Triumph. LOL

I am looking forward to seeing your lists Aly and Wen! Donna and Aly, did you know Wen read (correct me if I'm wrong Wen, LOL) 95 books 81 books last year, isn't that amazing???

message 11: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod

Giggle nah last year I finished out with 81. I Did manage to read 95 books in a year several years back but that was the most ever. I guess I need to do a book gaol thingie on here too. Each year I shoot for 2 books a week which would be....2 X 52 weeks in a year for 104 at the end of the year. I have never made it though...lol

message 13: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments Holy cow that's a lot of books!!!!!!! Good luck, Wen!! I'm hoping I can make fifty. I would love to read 104 books in a year, but I don't think its going to be this year. 95 is a lot too! I think my most in a year is thirty. But I'm not entirely sure as I've never officially kept track. And i like to reread the same books throughout the year.

message 14: by Colleen (last edited Feb 15, 2010 11:15PM) (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments So I was ten or so numbers off LOL, sorry Wen; it's still an amazing accomplishment!

message 15: by Wen (new)

Wen (thespoilingone) | 109 comments Colleen wrote: "So I was ten numbers off, sorry Wen; it's still an amazing accomplishment!"

Giggle well 10 books Is alot. OK I set up my goal thread too. I am working on book 10 for the year so far. Did you like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button? I loved the movie and thought of getting the book to read.

message 16: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments 10 books is a lot :) I did like CCoBB, it was a very quick read but interesting. I haven't seen the movie, not a Brad Pitt fan after the whole Jenifer Aniston thing. Let me know how accurate the movie is if you do decide to read the book.

message 17: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments 5. Nocturnal by Scott Sigler

You know, I absolutely do not like sci-fi or fantasy novels and had very sporadically read horror novels. I stumbled upon his books because they are available free on itune to listen too. I am hooked, this guy is a great writer and I recommend checking him out!

message 18: by Donna, The Pusher (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 3119 comments Mod
I'm with ya. I'm not really into those kinda books either but now and then I get surprised. Maybe I will check him out!

message 19: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments He's a great writer, but a cocky guy which does get annoying after a while if you choose to listen to the books, which he actually reads and records himself. He has put some of his books into print as well if you don't care to listen to him, totally worth stepping outside of your normally read genre's.

message 20: by Colleen (last edited Mar 21, 2010 01:43AM) (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments February

6. The Queen's Mistake: In the Court of Henry VIII by Diane Haeger

All caught up with January, now I am behind with February, eek!

Not too bad it's only 2/9!

message 22: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments it's ok, Colleen, I'm still trying to finish Cleo!

message 23: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Thanks for the encouragement Donna and Aly! Aly, are you serious? You and my dear dear Jennifer both seem to be in a readers block over that book.

message 24: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments It's true!! I'm almost to page seven hundred now. I just have really gotten into some other books so that one seems to have fallen by the wayside!! Sad!!!

message 25: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Aw, it was the opposite for me. I had a really hard time getting into it but then at the end I was drinking wine and staying up late. I actually wrote my review of MoC right after I finished it (at 1am).

message 26: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments I don't have that much left (in comparison to the rest of the book LOL) and I'm starting to get into it again, hurray!!!!! Did you write your review on Amazon?

message 27: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments No, I wrote it on here. I stopped doing reviews on amazon because for some reason no matter if I loved or hated a book/other merchandise people always freak out and make comments and/or rate that they don't like my review. At least on netflix people like my reviews! I have a bit of a following, though I haven't done a review in a while.

message 28: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Basically my first book of Feb. it's a school book but I read it cover to cover so it counts :)

7. Salon Fundamentals: Esthetics Study Guide

I am almost done with my #8. I figure I have to essentially read about 6 books a month.

message 29: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Hey Aly, did you read my MoC review yet?

message 30: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments I just read it!! That was a really good review!! Pretty much spot on with what I was thinking. I don't see myself reading it a second time either, but her Henry VIII book I've read three or four times and I have the audiobook :) I think it's because I have a total crush on her Henry! (That is, until he gets old and cantankerous!)

message 31: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Thanks Aly! LOL, you and Jen with you literary crushes on George's men!

8. Sylvia Plath by Susan Bassnett-McGuire

message 32: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments 9. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

message 33: by Colleen (new)

10. Little Women Book Two Book: Good Wives by Louisa May Alcott

Wen (thespoilingone) | 109 comments Colleen wrote: "All caught up with February now!

I remember reading Little Women a long time ago but never read continuations. Is this one good?

message 35: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments You know, I only read Little Women as a young child and hardly remembered it. I have been on a catching up with classics kick so I decided to re-read this one; the copy I picked up is titled just "Little Women" but it turns out the sequel "Good Wives" was added in with no intro. I read the second in the series quite by accident! LOL

I didn't like it as much because my hopes for marriages match ups didn't match what was written but I do recommend it if you loved the first book and want to know what happens after that. I think there is two more, "Jo's Boys" is one of them and I can't remember if there is a fourth or not. Oh, and it is a very easy read and about the same size as LW.

Sounds good to me. I will have to see if I can dig up a copy. I have been in the mood to reread or first time read some classics. Some I want to reread to see if I like them better or Get those I might not have as a teen.

message 37: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Okay, I just checked and this is how it is supposed to go as far as I can see: Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, and Jo's Boy's.

The school systems I was in sucked as far as book choices. I missed A LOT of classics and have been spending years trying to catch up.

Ok will have to look. I had Heard of Little Men but never read it.
I remember high school wise I had some diverse readings. Lots of plays, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and such. But we had depending on the year a Reading list and had to complete a set number of books from the list and report on them by a set time.
In college I took a few Literature Electives so got even more of a dose of classics then.

message 39: by Colleen (last edited Feb 28, 2010 12:57PM) (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments In HS I remember all we read (this is pathetic) was Romeo and Juliet, only two acts of Julius Caesar, Travels With Charlie, The Good Earth, Lord of the Flies, The Inheritors, and that was it. So Lame! My senior year in HS the English classes were mostly about college prep. In college I took creative writing my freshman year; currently going back to college to finish my degree in comparative literature so I am looking forward to A LOT of good books being read. I already have Dante's Inferno in Italian and I am really looking forward to reading such a great book in its original language.

message 40: by Colleen (last edited Mar 21, 2010 01:44AM) (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Yea for me, I am caught up and now moving on to my first March book! Back to reading two group reads then I can start on a book of my own choosing again.

March

11. Attila by William Napier

I am excited to get my hands on the next two books but I don't think they are out yet in the US. Since this is a first reads winner book I wrote a review of this one so check it out!

message 41: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments Colleen, your HS reading list is a lot like mine. They were so bad about putting things on reading lists in my HS. i read Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Grapes of Wrath, To Kill a Mockingbird, and then other books of our choosing. It was pretty pathetic too!!

message 42: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments The only reason I read Lord of the Flies and the Inheritors was because we had an assignment to chose two books of similar vein, compare them, then write a 20p paper on them. I remember I was so mad I didn't get to read as much as I wanted to that I took it upon myself to read Hamlet, The Scarlet Letter, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Catcher in the Rye to name a few. I had always heard about books you read in high school that I had bought several I assumed would be standard and they all collected dust on my shelves. Our US school systems really suck Aly!

message 43: by Colleen (last edited Mar 03, 2010 11:04PM) (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments What? Colleen is actually a tiny bit ahead for once instead of staying up late to catch up? Yesh...

12. Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki

We are on the same #! Let's race LOL

message 45: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments LOL, no fair I am trying to read S&S! ;D

message 46: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments 13. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

message 47: by Wen (new)

Wen (thespoilingone) | 109 comments Colleen wrote: "13. Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen"

Giggle You may well pass me up. I have only finished 16 so far. A race to the end of the year could be in order!!

So you didnt like Sense and Sensibility? I will like Jane A for you. How about that?

message 48: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (nightoleander) | 676 comments Works for me! I am going to read Emma eventually and make my final decision about Austen then. So far I hated S&S but liked P&P (liked, not loved mind you). Well, as for racing I can't predict how many books I will be able to knock out in Cambodia; although I do have four 12+ hour layovers and two 9+ hour flights. How many books do you think I can fit in my carry-on? LOL

Depends on how much OTHER stuff you find you will need. Giggle I would be the one to end up someplace with a suitcase with ONLY books in it.

message 50: by Aly (new)

Aly (Alygator) | 204 comments Ha!! Wen, that's funny!!! Colleen, I went backpacking in Europe last summer and about half of my backpack weight was books!! I also kept buying them. It got so bad that I had to send some back to the States!!!
