Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) I'm confused. Since I joined GoodReads three months ago I've repeatedly seen all this emphasis on Amazon tagging. I don't get it. Categorizing a book or even saying you like it doesn't influence sales -- at least that's what other authors have told me.
My understanding is that GoodReads members are among the most prolific readers around -- why else be in a reading group? Hope I'm wrong, but patting each other on the back because you tagged someone seems like a mutual admiration society that fails to actually help authors who are struggling in a super-competitive environment. Would someone please tell me where I'm wrong and how tagging REALLY helps authors?

message 988: by Kate (new)

Kate | 58 comments I was confused too, Larry. But as I understand it, it raises visibility of your book, the more people that tag it. If a book is tagged only once for eg 'romance' then it will be lost amongst the crowd. But if eg 200 people have tagged it as 'romance' then that's given it an endorsement. Therefore it could be said ti have an indirect effect on sales

message 989: by Cheri (last edited Jul 11, 2011 05:50AM) (new)

Cheri | 9 comments Hi Larry, I didn't get it at first either. But it's really about coming up in Amazon searches more often. If the book is tagged right and has a lot of tags it will come up in more searches, which will then help more buyers find your book. So if you look next to the “Tags customers associate with this produced” (on the right) you’ll see “See most popular Tags” and “Search Products tagged with.” This is how many buyers find the type of books they’re looking for.

Let’s face it Amazon has close to a million titles for sale. Tags help you get found.

In fact...Because anyone can enter their own tags for a book, or maybe it’s a mix-up with Amazon, I’m not sure...but the tags on one of my books are a little messed up. It has tags from my other book on it.

If you all could help me fix it, I’d appreciate it, since I can’t remove the incorrect tags. Please only click on at least: Paranormal romance, paranormal, vampire, vampire romance, Paris, and young adult romance first. Then you can click on anything else EXCEPT: fey, ghosts, and historical romance.

Thanks so much!!

Cheri,

Wish I knew a symbol for scratching my head. :-) When I put my books up, I was given a choice of which tags I wanted to apply. Did so. Are you saying that if "mystery" or "romance" as examples are repeatedly tagged it moves the book higher up on the list of returns?

message 994: by Kate (new)

Kate | 58 comments 'Mystery' and 'Romance' are genres. Tags are separate and you can choose up to 15 tags to describe your book

message 995: by Larry (new)

Larry Moniz (larrymoniz) Kate wrote: "'Mystery' and 'Romance' are genres. Tags are separate and you can choose up to 15 tags to describe your book"

I realize they're genres, but are they not also the same words that appear as tags?

message 996: by Kate (new)

Kate | 58 comments No, that's what I was saying. You pick the genre from their list when you upload the book, whereas you (and other people) can tag your book once it's uploaded, and there's no set list. You pick them yourself, though you might want to list the genre again. Sometimes the tags disappear. Amazon had a clampdown recently, then they would appear on the US and not the UK site and vice versa.

message 997: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Atkinson (darkened_angel) Just tagged you Kate

message 998: by Cheri (last edited Jul 12, 2011 07:51AM) (new)

Cheri | 9 comments Larry,

For example: With my book Fair Maiden, I’m limited as to how many genres and sub genres I can choose. But I can add up to 15 tags. This means if someone is looking for a book set in Victorian England, or with a spin on Sleeping Beauty, or with fey in it, or a sweet romance, then they can search for those things and my book will be more likely to come up if it’s tagged well.

I think many writers don’t realize that tags are important, but sometimes when people are searching for something to read, they’ll search for a topic more specific than just the genre.
