Brooke | 0 comments The bugs thread in the Feedback group suggests there's a big delay in the group broadcast right now, so there's a chance no one will see my email about the February fantasy poll being up. Hopefully some of you will see this post and go vote here:

Paul Hollis | 22 comments I'm confused, we just voted for March.

message 3: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments March's fantasy book is from the random selection list. The schedule is:

February:
Fantasy theme
Sci Fi random selection list

March:
Fantasy random selection list
Sci Fi theme

No one from the GR team has responded in the feedback threads about the broken group broadcaster, so the vote count for the Feb theme poll is still pretty low. Hopefully they'll get that fixed before we start nominations and voting for the book so that more people can be aware of it.

Paul Hollis | 22 comments ok now I'm clear and I voted.

Brooke | 0 comments Alrighty, everyone - this is going to be difficult without the group broadcast working, but the end of January is creeping up and we need to make our nominations and vote. Does anyone have any ideas for how to alert people without using the broadcast? I could set up a fake poll again and use the poll invite, but that will only target less than half our group and it didn't seem to draw too many people to the theme poll.

Regardless of the small number of votes, the theme World Fantasy Award Nominee from 2000-present won by a large margin. Since we're working from a set number of books to nominate, I'll take the first 8 books that are nominated and then seconded and put them in a poll.

The list is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Fa...

As soon as 8 are nominated/seconded, this nomination process will close.

The Novella, Anthology, and Collection categories are valid as well right?

In any case, I nominate Territory by Emma Bull.

message 7: by Laurel (new)

Laurel I nominate The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold.

May I second Territory by Emma Bull? I've heard great things.

message 9: by Paul (new)

Paul Hollis | 22 comments I nominate Pedido Street Station

message 10: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments Greyweather, I think as long as it's substantial enough for a month-long discussion, sure. Some novellas that I've read wouldn't be a good pick for that, but I'll leave that up to the people who nominate/second whether they think it's appropriate for our purposes.

I'll second Perdido Street Station. I think of it whenever I see that commercial with the moth flying over the sleeping city. shivers...

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I nominate Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay

Peregrine Jon wrote: "I nominate Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay"

Seconded.

message 15: by Greyweather (new)

Greyweather | 231 comments I second The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold. It is one of my favorite books.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments Peregrine wrote: "I nominate Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson."

I'll second this...

Seconded.

message 18: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 243 comments Is it too late to nominate Tim Powers' Declare? I've been meaning to read that.

message 19: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments So far our poll will include:

Territory by Emma Bull
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay
Curse of the Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson
Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch

We need two more. Great picks so far!

message 20: by Julia (new)

Julia | 957 comments I nominate Briar Rose by Jane Yolen if it's not too late.Briar Rose

message 21: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments Not too late! Sorry, Sarah Pi, your post wasn't there yet when I was composing mine.

Julia, the Wikipedia page says that Briar Rose was nominated in 1993, which makes it earlier than the scope of the theme, which is 2000-present.

So the update is:

Declare by Tim Powers has been nominated, needs a second

Or, nominate something else for the final 2 spots.

Candiss (tantara) Sarah Pi wrote: "Is it too late to nominate Tim Powers' Declare? I've been meaning to read that."

I'll second Declare.

message 23: by Richard (last edited Jan 25, 2010 01:06PM) (new)

Richard (mrredwood) | 165 comments Since you're in such a gol-darn'd hurry, I'll toss in Ombria in Shadow by Patricia A. McKillip. I haven't read it, but y'all might remember we read her excellent Alphabet of Thorn not too long ago. I think she deserves more attention.

message 24: by Greyweather (new)

Greyweather | 231 comments Bull, Bujold, and Powers all in one poll. I like those odds.

Wouldn't mind seeing one of those Graham Joyce books nominated either *hint* *hint*

message 25: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments Territory by Emma Bull
Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
Ysabel by Guy Gavriel Kay
Curse of the Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold
Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson
Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch
Declare by Tim Powers

Do we have a second for Ombria in Shadow? Or a different nomination? Whatever wins, it looks like we're going to have an excellent book picked for Feb.

message 26: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I'll second Ombria in Shadow (mostly because I have it sitting on a book shelf somewhere and need an excuse to move it up the reading priority list).

message 27: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments Jon, I'm always voting for things based on what I need an excuse to move up my TBR list!

Thanks for nominating guys, I'll get the poll set up and hopefully the limited poll invite and the notice here will be enough to alert people that it's time to vote.

message 28: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 0 comments http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/29...

Voting runs through the 30th - I'm hoping that the group broadcast will be fixed before, but we'll have to make do for now.
