The recriminations began long before the votes confirmed Republican Scott Brown's stunning capture of the Massachusetts Senate seat held for nearly five decades by the late Democrat Edward Kennedy.

What do you think caused the Republican win/Dem loss? What are the implications? Other comments?

The simple answer to why Scott Brown won is this: Martha Coaxley committed the political cardinal sin of thinking she had this election all wrapped up. As long as Democrats keep thinking they'll still have Democratic voters lined up without doing any real campaigning and listening to voters' concerns, then lifelong Democratic voters will turn to Republicans.

The shame of this is Scott Brown comes across as a complete doofus. He'll serve Massachusetts poorly, I'm afraid.

What the Dems were peddling was a pipe dream in itself.

Sarah | 13814 comments Hence "even more".

They had also proved too chicken to use their filibuster-proof majority, so I don't see any difference now that it's been taken away.

Lori It's just such a shock! My bf is from MA, and she is mightily depressed right now.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Your boyfriend, Lori? Does your husband know about him?

:)

You know, I think the Republicans need to be careful with language like "this is a mandate from the people that they hate everything in the Dem program" in the same way that the Dems probably should have been more careful when Obama won with the "this is a mandate from the people that they like everything in the Dem program." It's one election, in one state, and political winds change quickly.

Now, how exactly does the lack of a super-majority (am I saying that right?) impact legislation? I'm not sure I understand.

Lori I think that if parties vote along their respective party line, there's no longer a majority which means the Dems are fucked! Not that they were doing a great job anyway. *sigh*

And I guess I just proved that I am so uncool. The correct lingo must then be bff? :D
