Angie Pangan | 4795 comments So in English, we're having a Gatsby party next Thursday and I've been assigned Daisy. (None if us have read the book yet. This is an intro activity.) Can anyone help me develop my snobby rich person accent or give me some 20's phrases to say during the party?

Hi everyone. I know the topic prompt for this weeks short stories & poems is ECLIPSE. I just saw a headline for eclipses that will be happening starting on the 15th. Check out this website on Earth Sky News - the fourth report down. http://mail.aol.com/38507-111/aol-6/e... Have a good day. :)~

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments There just might be a light at the end of the tunnel for me. As you all know, the reason I resigned from participating in the WSS contests is because of my frequent and inopportune bouts of mental exhaustion. I have a late sleeping schedule, I take long naps in the middle of the day, and whenever I get the urge to work on writing, editing, or reading, I get too tired to do it. I set up an appointment with my therapist (Rachel) and we’re tentatively shooting for the 9th of May (she’ll be out of town until then). I have a number of theories I want to run by her, the main one being the possibility that I’m clinically depressed. Not just sad about life, but actually depressed. There’s a difference, just ask Elizabeth Wurtzel or any psychology professor. If there is a solution for my depression and/or mental exhaustion, then maybe…just maybe I can one day compete in the WSS contests again. It’s a huge maybe, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for this one.

Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Hi Guys, I need your help!!!

My girls were given two envelopes yesterday to send to the fairies which said that if they left them under their pillows the fairies would take them away and grant their wishes. By the time I got home from work they had already written them out and put them under their pillows.
They wished for a trip to Fairy Land to visit the Fairy Queen! I've stalled a bit today saying that the Queen must have lots of letters to reply to - but I'm struggling with a plot line that will hold water!

They've spent today packing their cases for their trip!!

If anyone has a good idea how to keep the magic in this scenario I'd appreciate the help!

Fingers crossed!!!!!

Ryan | 5334 comments - Put them to bed a bit early.

- Set up a small corner of your garden with tinsel, candles, music on iPod, two bags of lollies, fairy stuff.

- Make masks for the three of you.

- Get your girls out of bed, put on masks, take them out into garden.

- Leave a note from the fairy queen saying she had to leave to help some children but thank you for visiting fairyland, lollies are for you to take home.

- Bit of work but could be lots of fun.

:)

ooh, that's not a bad idea!!

Any other ideas we'd had involved saying they hadn't been.

We'd thought of making some excuse as to why hey couldn't come at the moment and give them a special task to help the fairies or maybe saying the could come but they won't remember etc...

but all of these things were a bit ...I don't know.... too rational, maybe?!

thanks Ryan,
still open to any other suggestions - I have until this evening to decided and then I'll have to put something in writing, or the natives will get restless!

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments I've had jury duty twice in my life, but neither time did they actually need me.

message 2070: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments I always think of short stories as being written from only one point of view, but I've been wondering lately, can a short story have more than one POV like a longer piece of work? I just realised that one of my stories that became a prologue was written from two POV and another one I have been working on feels like it won't work unless it is from two or three.

message 2071: by Ryan (new)

Ryan | 5334 comments There's no rule to say you can't have multiple POV's within a short story, Saira. I've read some really good ones that are written that way. The challenge as a writer is to be able to get the reader to empathize with multiple characters effectively in such limited space. Too much jumping between characters can easily leave them feeling a bit flat and lifeless or confuse the reader as there isn't a lot of room to develop a single character in a short, let alone multiple.

But hey, it's only a story after all. I think the best thing to do is always write, write, write! Whatever, whenever and however you choose. Stepping out of your comfort zone is always a great opportunity. Even if the story doesn't make it to your completed pile, it will always be good practice and a good learning experience. And, who knows - you may just write the next best seller. Good luck :)

message 2072: by Kymela (new)

Kymela (kymelatejasi) | 674 comments I actually seem to add multiple POV more frequently than I thought when writing in third person. It seems the only time I can seem to write from only one POV is in first person.

Same happened here. I almost was part of a jury group but wasn't picked amongst it for the case. I joked to myself the only "duty" I did that day was when I used the bathroom near the courtroom! Sorry. Immature joke I know. :)

message 2081: by Garrison (new)

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments If you think that's immature, I stunk up the bathroom so badly this morning my sister-in-law Susan almost puked. She described the stench as smelling like "sugar and rotten meat".

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments Earlier today, I had my obligatory appointment with my therapist Rachel. There just might be a light at the end of the tunnel after all. It turns out that my antipsychotic medication is known for blunting emotions and making the user feel lethargic. After I come back from my California vacation from May 13th to May 20th, I’m going to contact Rachel again and see if she can reduce the dose on that medication. It’s just an experiment we’re going to try, but I’m confident it will give me the answers (and the mental energy) I need to work like a madman once more. Wish me luck!

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments This coming Tuesday, I’m going on vacation with my family to California for a week. That means my activity online will be minimal and my creative output will be nonexistent. For the WSS contest, it means I won’t participate in that week’s challenge. For Readers, Writers, and Roleplayers, it means I won’t post anymore characters in my journal, I won’t post any chapters of Fireball Nightmare, and I won’t be available for role-playing. Hopefully, it’ll be a fun vacation and worth the wait to do anything creatively.

Garrison Kelly (cybador) | 10136 comments It’s been a week away from Port Orchard, but it was one well spent. For the first half of that week, I was in Monterey, California and for the second half of the week, I was still in California, but this time in Windsor with a pit stop in San Francisco.

I’m always complaining about how Port Orchard is a boring place to live, so going to California for a week was a huge improvement in my routine. The sun was always out, the puppies were out walking their masters (or is it the other way around?), the feminine eye-candy was out in full force, the food was delicious, and best of all, it was a laidback vacation. Most of the vacations I’ve been on with my mom and step-dad Dale have been ones where we would rush from place to place to do things. This one was not like those vacations. Yes, we did some cool things, but it was on a relaxed schedule. I like vacations where I just get to kick back and be myself.

By the way, I’ve got some pictures on the family camera that I’d like to share with everybody on Face Book and Deviant Art. It may not be right away, but I’ve got some good ones, believe me. I even have a picture of myself in a fedora. Imagine that: me in a fedora. Who would’ve thunk it? And then we have pictures of animal cuties, let’s not forget those.

No matter how boring a city Port Orchard may be, it’s always nice to come home to my own devices. California was great, don’t get me wrong. In fact, I’d even dare say that I’d want to live there. But Port Orchard is my home and having my orange kitty Smokey sleeping on my bed is the sweetest feeling in the world. It’s good to be back, everybody. I hope you’re glad to have me back. We’ve got ears, say cheers!

Nicky (soundgirl) | 1388 comments Do any of you guys ever feel you're only in disguise as a grown up?
I've just had an argument with my youngest as to why she can't wear ballet shoes in the garden when it's raining. Obviously the sensible Mummy argued that the shoes would get muddy and wet and be damaged meaning she's need new ballet shoes which we couldn't afford.
However a little voice in side said "Yes I can see why it would be nice to dance in the garden in the rain - why not"
!!!
Good sense won out and she's dancing in her wellies but roll on lottery win!

message 2099: by [deleted user] (last edited May 25, 2014 04:50AM) (new)

So cute. That would make a fine painting: A little girl in a garden dancing in her ballet slippers. At least take some pictures! What kind of flowers are in your garden, Nicky? I have heard you mention your garden before.

My cousin and I used to dress in slips (camesols & slip skirts) and retreat when it rained to a copse of bushes. Underneathe the rain would not touch us. Maybe if you gave her a substitute to wearing ballet shoes she would still be happy. :) What kind of garden do you have? And where are you compared to Norwich UK? Just curious.

Ryan | 5334 comments Hah - every day!

I actually get told off most days for being more immature than my boys (bit of a worry as they're only 3.5 and 1.5!).

Nice compromise, Nicky. Very well played.

I meant to ask, how did things end up with the Fairy Queen?
