Kyra (Nikara) | 1221 comments (bows) Fellow older sibling here! Edward, the materials you listed would be an excellent way to aggravate Al... unless she has two fishing rods, twelve meters of electrical wire, and a firecracker close at hand. In which case, Hanzle's going to have a lot more difficulty with that C4. XD

Fair point. Going to need an extra roll of duct tape, just in case.

Kyra (Nikara) | 1221 comments Happy Birthday to you as well, then, Cap'n!

Okay, yesterday I said this on the popcorn thread, but that was kind of a joke. I really am leaving for camp now. So... bye!

message 1815: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Have fun @ camp. I figured you were serious in popcorn. We expect a full report on the juicy bits when you get back!

Hello everyone!! Where are those cookies?!

message 1820: by Edward (new)

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments We ate them. Mostly Guy and Al did.

message 1821: by Zack (new)

Zack ...someone say cookies?!? I think M's mice have been hoarding them all to trade for "favors."

message 1822: by Cheyenne (new)

Cheyenne | 815 comments Ah, that's okay I've found three dozen in my kitchen >:)

M | 11617 comments Among the ponderous posts in the “What is poetry?” thread in the Poetry group is a suave remark by Ajay: “Poetry is what Roger Federer does (or rather used to do) on the tennis court.” I thoroughly enjoyed it!

message 1824: by Christa VG (new)

Christa VG (christa-ronpaul2012) How does this sound for the inside of a birthday card.

"Happy happy birthday,
All my rhymes sound lame,
But a birthday card should have words,
So here they freaking are!"

message 1825: by [deleted user] (last edited Aug 05, 2013 09:12PM) (new)

hahahaha I'd love to receive something like that for my birthday :))

message 1826: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn (joc113) Oh, I'd love that. I would laugh so darn hard, no one would ever get me to stop.

I tend to laugh at a lot of things... Easily amused, I suppose...

message 1827: by C. J., Cool yet firm like ice (new)

C. J. Scurria (goodreadscomcj_scurria) | 4483 comments My dad (who turned... let's say a big number with an 0 on the end!) received this card:

On your birthday, just a note to say I can't tell how valuable you are.

(Inside)
... but the Antiques Roadshow is coming to town- they'll be able to give you an estimate.

Happy Birthday

message 1828: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Christa, I'd laugh at a birthday card with that text.

@ M. There have been ponderous posts? Where? I want to know what places to avoid.

Ajay's comment is excellent. But I imagine it fell into the group like a naked sumo wrestler doing a cannonball dive at someone's back yard cotillion.

message 1829: by Jocelyn (new)

Jocelyn (joc113) Haha, Awesome CJ.

message 1830: by Paulina (new)

Paulina | 49 comments Hi everyone, I hope I'm posting in the right section lol. I wasn't sure where to post this so I figured a general discussion might be ok. If there's a better place where I should post this please let me know. I just have a few quick grammar/punctuation questions about writing dialogue. I tried looking this up online but I haven't really found any really specific answers. owl.english.purdue.edu did manage to help a lot. Anyway, I know when something like "he/she said" is put after dialogue it would look like this,
"Okay," he said.
but what about when the word after the dialogue is a verb that doesn't essentially mean "said?" Out of these two, which one would be the correct one?
"Okay," he smiled.
"Okay." He smiled.
Also does anything change when the dialogue ends with a question? Out of these two, which one would be the correct one?
"Okay?" he said.
"Okay?" He said.
Thanks for any help.

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Hello, Paulina. These are excellent questions, and point to just how subtle is English.

The WSS has a section for this type of question.

Go to Composition and Grammar.

I have copied your text into it.

message 1832: by Paulina (new)

Paulina | 49 comments Thank you! Someone sent me a grammar website to check out too.

message 1833: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments I have been on the verge of responding to your questions, but my wife keeps interrupting me. And M is one of the most articulate people I have ever read when it comes to grammar. I look forward to his reply.

C. J. Scurria (goodreadscomcj_scurria) | 4483 comments Hey guys. I just wanted to know if anyone watches MasterChef. Who wants to chat about that show? (I know I did this last year too but though only one person chatted with me it has been more successful than when I ask on Facebook).

Does anyone have any predictions about who will win?

message 1835: by Guy (new)

Guy (egajd) | 11249 comments Hello, CJ.
Jessie has my nod. But I'm not watching it as diligently as I have in the past, so I probably will be an anemic chatterer about it.

message 1836: by C. J., Cool yet firm like ice (new)

C. J. Scurria (goodreadscomcj_scurria) | 4483 comments I am hoping for Bri!
I thought I was going to be wrong about her winning the title after she was voted off but now my hopes have been started again when this week she was brought back to the show! I wonder if she will win...

I was somehow right in predicting Christine was going to win last year.

I think that Bri is phenomenal that she makes great dishes that have to contain meat while she herself is a vegetarian. I find that so admirable!

Edward (edwardtheresejr) | 2434 comments Add to the list of words Microsoft Word doesn't have: grifter.

Paulina | 49 comments Guy wrote: "I have been on the verge of responding to your questions, but my wife keeps interrupting me. And M is one of the most articulate people I have ever read when it comes to grammar. I look forward to ..."

Thanks again for all the help though, and to everyone else who responded.

Edward and Belly, Word has quite a bit of words missing last time I used it, mostly some science words (I'm a Biology major) like words having to do with genus and species name. This also happens with some general well-known proper Nouns, like the names of places for example(while it has other well-known ones). I guess it's understandable that Word is missing some rarely used words, but I'm sure there's some people out there who actually use Word that will need to use those words.

Zack Anyone staying up late tonight to watch the meteor showers?

message 1840: by Zack (new)

Zack Whaaat? Perseid meteor shower, it's annual, so if you don't catch it this year, there's always 2014. It's the "old faithful" of meteor showers.

message 1841: by Zack (new)

Zack Was pretty good last night, I'm hoping tonight will be as well.

message 1842: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol! At least you've figured out how to get to WSS :)

message 1843: by Zack (new)

Zack Just look up. There going to be everywhere. Small groups averaging 60 per minute. Late night early morning.

message 1844: by Zack (new)

Zack I'm not even going to touch the bit about living with a goat in a cave, that's just too easy.

message 1845: by [deleted user] (new)

haha, get out of your cave, Belly and smell the flowers :P

message 1846: by Nate (new)

Nate | 166 comments Caves could cool...I wanna live in a cave and have a pet dragon.

message 1847: by [deleted user] (new)

Belly, do I need to take a deep breath before reading this? :D

message 1848: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol! Okay, I'll just read 99 again :P

message 1849: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm, that's a relief, I guess? I can't find it in Amazon.
