Karlyne Landrum I'll have to have my younger daughter, who is the children's librarian at a small town library, order "Udolpho" for me. I've always enjoyed the references to it but never read it; should be entertaining, to say the least.
Thanks for the welcome!

When I saw your statement "we all still love Jane" I think it is safe to say we are kindred spirits! Welcome to our group!

Liz Schulte Hello! My name is Liz. I am 30 and from Missouri. The first time I read Jane Austen was in my sophomore year of college and we were assigned Pride and Prejudice, it was love. Since I have read all of her books, some of them multiple times. I have recently joined JASNA. I look forward to having lively discussion with you!

Liz

. . . then again, I haven't posted anything much.

Hey, Claire, if you use the reply button on a post, some of their text gets added to your post -- that way we can see who you are referring to. :) I thought you were "Hoping to win" not commenting on being (most likely) our youngest member, and younger than Hope! lol

p.s. I love your username! :)

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh, sorry.
I probably should have done "Hope--I win; etc." Or now I could have hit reply.
P.S. Thank you! :)

No need to apologize. Just wanted to point out the feature. I thought I had missed out on a contest! lol (I would not win the "youngest member" contest)

Shirley (shirlitaloquita) Hi Everyone!
My name is Shirley. I'm a 25 year old, assistant editor at a Trade Publication based in New York.
I actually just finished reading both Persuasion and Pride & Prejudice for the FIRST time a few weeks ago!

Hard to believe, I know, but we were NEVER assigned Jane Austen works in any of the schools I attended, so I never had a chance to read them till recently. My best friend who is a die hard Jane Austen fan has been trying to get me to read Austen for years, and believe me, I'm so happy I finally gave in!

I must say I LOVED LOVED LOVED both novels. And was wondering if any of you could offer suggestions as to what Jane Austen novel I should tackle next? Also, are any of the "Spin off" novels worth reading?

Very excited to be a part of this group!

Best,
Shirley

Hi Shirley! Welcome to the group. You picked the top two for your first reads, so I would suggest "Sense & Sensibility" or "Emma" next. There are plenty of book suggestions on our shelves and plenty of discussion threads about the books. Take a look around. I am sure you will find something you will enjoy! Check out our polls, too.

Like Jeannette I want to welcome you to the group too, Shirley! Anything Ms. Austen wrote is well worth reading. Don't forget the devilishly clever Lady Susan either. So, dive in and have fun! Cheers! Chris

Hey, Shirley! Some of our nicest JA folks have already welcomed you to the group! I am excited for your new interest in Austen, isn't it great!

I also recommend either Sense & Sensibility or Emma -- whichever you are in the mood for -- but I am sure it only a matter of time until the next one. :)

I will add to the recommendations for spin-offs -- check out all the Good Reads reviews listed when you look up one of the novels here. There is a wide range of them and it kind of depends on what tone you are looking for with them. Happy looking.

I just read Lady Susan today, and I love wicked Lady Susan! A great bite-sized version of Vanity Fair's Becky Sharpe. I just wish there was more...

Shirley - I would recommend you base your next Austen read on what you are in the mood for, because for me, my mood and state of mind can really determine how much I enjoy a novel. If you really want a good solid week of Austen and are in the mood for a riddle of a plot read Emma. Or if you want something quick and fun read Northanger Abbey. Any Austen you read will be great though!

message 116: by Shirley (new)

Shirley (shirlitaloquita) Thanks for the warm welcome :)
I am happy to report that I have ordered Lady Susan as well as Sense & Sensibility. So I'll be tackling those two next.

Thanks again! :)

message 123: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Hi Everyone,

I'm Jenny and read my first Austen (P&P) when I was about 15 (which was a very looong time ago...lol) and was absolutely mesmerized by it and have been an avid fan ever since. I've read all her books (studied several in various Arts/English Lit courses), read biographies, and watched most of the Austen related movies/TV series. I also read some prequel/sequels/spinoffs but don't enjoy them nearly as much as the real thing.

People who know me well were hardly surprised when I named my son Darcy, and luckily he hasn't minded much at all. He's even found it works to his advantage at high school because all the girls think it's really cool that he's named for Mr Darcy. I've also had many pets over the years named after various Austen characters.

My favourite book is Persuasion, my favourite Austen hero is Captain Wentworth, my favourite Austen related movie is Clueless, my favourite Mr Darcy actor is Colin Firth and my favourite Austen related possession is a paperweight I bought off eBay :-).

Hi Jenny and welcome (officially, this time) to the group! You really named your son Darcy? How cool is that! What a lucky guy that Jane is so popular now -- great way to get to know girls! ;)

message 125: by Jemidar (new)

Jemidar Yes, I really named my son Darcy (blush). I probably would've preferred Willoughby but my then husband wouldn't agree to it...lol. And yeah, Darcy (or me!) is very lucky Jane is so popular and it has worked to his advantage, and you know what the really great thing is...not only do the girls think he's cool but they think I'm cool to :-).

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

Good to meet you Jenny. Welcome!

Jemidar Another for Colin! Hooray!! :D

Who can resit Mr Darcy in a wet shirt?! ;-D

My second favourite is Lawrence Olivier. The first proposal scene with him is quite something, although the rest of the movie isn't great and Greer Garson is terribly miscast as Lizzie.

I can! lol I'm a Matthew fan!

Robin (robin1129) | 306 comments Jemidar wrote: "although the rest of the movie isn't great..."

My main problem with that version is the costuming. It sets it too much near the Victorian era instead of the Regency. I agree with you though about the first proposal scene -- !!

And Jeannette -- we're talking Mr. Darcy in a wet shirt, not Colin or Matthew ... :)

Robin wrote: "And Jeannette -- we're talking Mr. Darcy in a wet shirt, not Colin or Matthew ... :) "

Yes, who could resist Darcy in a wet shirt? I can resist Colin Firth. I like both productions, but I favor the 2005 film. Now, Captain Wentworth, sea spray.....

Don't get me started on the costuming...lol. I purposely didn't mention it because otherwise it would've turned into a rant!

And I think I could cope with Colin as opposed to Mr Darcy in a wet shirt ;-D.
