WELCOME, Lori, Christina, and Reid!
Yep, re-reading Pride and Prejudice is always a good idea! :)
Happy to have you all here!

I have been an ardent lover of Austen since around seventh grade. Dear Jane has a special room in my heart, and I do not doubt that her books will keep me company until death do us part.
I've lived in China most of my life, but recently moved back to the US. I'm a high school student (no getting around it, unfortunately), a waitress, a literature nut, a pursuer of knowledge, an occasional writer/musician, and an incurable hopeless romantic.
Hello Christine! Thanks for introducing yourself and welcome to the group. Look around as we have lots of discussion topics going. Let us know what you think!

WELCOME, Christine!
You are clearly an ardent Jane fan, so you've come to the right group! Glad to have you here!

I got hooked by Jane before I was a teen, by accident. I was, and still am, a movie buff (yes, even at that age). I was intrigued by the movie poster of Pride & Prejudice, the Greer Garson version, but by then it was not showing in theaters anymore and back then there was no DVD, nor even VCR, so I ended up reading the book. The rest is history.
The movie adaptations and fanfics do not interest me—just her work, and books about her, although, for some odd reason, Lost in Austen is a guilty pleasure of mine.
I’m the proud owner of The Cambridge Edition of all of Jane’s work.
Has anyone here read Deresiewicz’s A Jane Austen Education yet? A definite must-read for every true Janeite.
Although I read P&P first, it is not my favorite. It’s probably Emma, or Persuasion … or Mansfield Park … or The Watsons, or … depends on my mood, I guess.

My older sister "introduced me to Jane" at a young age (shortly after the P&P mini-series came out in... 1995?). I've read 4 of her novels - P&P, S&S, Emma, and Persuasion. Emma is prob. my favorite, but I'm more familiar with P&P.

Hello Tony, Aerykah and Leah! Welcome to the group!

Really enjoying it Leah!! And both those adaptations are great!!
And Tony - great to have a guy. I have yet to read that one but I want to!!

Anyone any other suggestions?
And I loves reading about the manners of then to Leah!

They are very nice, Soph. Top quality printing and materials. The notes and appendices are not all that extensive but still invaluable. You don’t want to open these up for everyday reading. It took me about three years to save up to purchase the nine volumes separately, amounting to well over a thousand dollars. Recently they started offering the full set for $990, if I remember right.
I have a great number of Jane Austen biographical work, but the one author I have the highest respect for is John Halperin. He is not very much liked in the Janeite community because he did not go out of his way to sugar-coat the subject matter. (Jane was not all that nice, you know. Kind, but also naughty.) It’s out of print, last I looked, but if you can find his The Life of Jane Austen, you will find it very enlightening. Get the paperback, if you have a choice. The hardcover was an earlier edition, not as complete.
Deirdre Le Faye had some good books, especially Jane Austen’s Letters, but not very objective. I would first recommend William Deresiewicz’s A Jane Austen Education—very scholarly and well written. Appropriate even for the budding Janeite.

*gasp* yur here!

I am indeed a budding Janeite though already feel like a proper Janeite - and I am only 16 ;)
WELCOME, Tony, Aerykah, and Leah!
Tony, you aren't the only guy here but another one of you is always nice. :) Aerykah, keep reading Austen's others and you will love them. Leah, I adore Northanger Abbey too! Henry Tilney, especially as J.J. Feild plays him, is a fabulous leading man.
Glad to have you all here!

Basically, I wanted a version of P&P, my favorite romance novel ever, that I could personally identify with a bit more. After waiting for years to see if someone else would write a gay/ lesbian version that stays as true to the original as possible, I gave up waiting and wrote my own variation. The reviews have been quite good so far; the book is here on Goodreads, as are the reviews, and on Amazon, in case you're curious to read more about it.
I've been lurking on this group for a couple of months enjoying the discussions, and finally decided to officially say hello. So, hello, fellow Janeites!

Wow! Kate Christie in the flesh. Welcome! Honestly I haven’t had a chance to read your book but my guess is you must have gotten a good amount of heat over it. You might be interested in this article,

I was severely attacked in one of the JA forums when I posted the same. But that’s okay.

Thanks for joining us Pamela! I knit and have both editions of Jane Austen Knits - beautiful things!

Stephanie & Megan - I am just taking up crochet now for the first time but that book had to be one of the first I got, it has all sorts of things including a accessories, carriage blankets, children's clothes (almost all girls). Lots of lovely things in it.
Soph - Yes, I need to speed up a little more or it will be bleeding into August or more and be a late 'summer'.

My name is Edward H. Carpenterand I've long been a fan of Austen's books, of historical fact and fiction, and of writing.
It's all coming together now as I'm in work on a serialized novel entitled The Perfidious Mister Wickham, which takes a look at Pemberley, London, Meryton, Brighton, and other well-loved locales through the eyes of the eponymous scoundrel, before taking the rakish young officer (with Lydia in tow) north from Longbourn to Newcastle and into a whole new set of adventures.
Researching this book has been lots of fun - it's a great excuse to re-read all of Austen's novels, as well as historical sources and modern-day books on Regency culture, architecture, etc. But I've gotten some great observations, criticism, and interesting facts from other readers and writers, and hope to find more in this forum as well!
Looking forward to getting to know you all better as time goes on.
Best regards,
Edward

A special note for Megan and Rachel; have been perusing the sub-groups, and curious to know where you think my current project might be suitable for discussion... Any thoughts are most appreciated...
Happy reading!

Hi Tony! In the virtual flesh, anyway. :) Thanks for including that link. I read that article a while ago as well, and would like to say I am surprised by the uproar surrounding it, but of course am not.
You know, I thought my book might trigger some less-than-kind responses for daring to break up the Darcy-Lizzie duo (understandably--they are among the most popular couples in literary history), but in fact, there has been mostly silence from the Austen community. I've offered review copies to a handful of Austen bloggers, and only one even responded to my inquiry, with a "not my cup of tea" apology. (Any bloggers out there reading this who would be interested in a review copy, let me know!)
I suspected a queer classic might be a shockingly narrow niche, but I really wanted to read Gay P&P, so there you go! My next novel is contemporary again, so I suspect it will be more attractive to the GLBT fiction crowd than "period pieces," which tend not to do as well in the community.
I'm envious you own the Cambridge Edition. Maybe some day...

Hi Tony! In the virtua..."
Kate, I must confess an aversion for fanfic but your approach gave me a reason to push aside my prejudice. Better than zombies, for sure! A lot of alleged Jane fans have put her on a pedestal implying that she was not capable of any “deviant” behavior. She was not superhuman, even though she was a super human. I even got flamed for proposing that she had a crush on Mr Haden … as if she was not capable of being a cougar, or of being jealous. The Haden incident, I think, showed best that she was, indeed, very human. So imagine how they would recoil at the possibility of her having been gay!
Anyway, as much as I despise fanfic, I’m guilty of trying to write a completion to The Watsons. I’m collaborating with a friend on this, and if any one heroine of JA is suited for a gay twist, Emma Watson would be it. She could chew up and spit out any one of those men, especially Lord Osborne, without even trying. This work probably could have become her next great novel had circumstances not turned out the way they did—the father in the story was close to dying just when Jane’s real father died. Prophetic? She must have believed that. It must have been a truly ironic blow, and she never got back to working on it. What a loss for humanity.
If you have not read it yet, give it a try. It’s a very short, easy read. I typeset it in PDF, which is available here …
