Hello! I've been a huge fan of Austen since junior high when I first read Emma and then Pride and Prejudice. After that there was no going back! I've lost count of the number of times I've reread the novels. A few years ago, I got my husband hooked on them as well by handing him P&P and then showing him the BBC version (Ah, Colin Firth). Anyway, I never tire of talking about these books and each discussion seems to bring up something new. I'm looking forward to being here.

'Hello! I've been a huge fan of Austen since junior high when I first read Emma and then Pride and Prejudice. After that there was no going back! (i have even started a thread on it in general to find out people's views :)) i was just wondering as you read it first whether you liked it, as, unlike many others feelings, i really like Emma :) 'A few years ago, I got my husband hooked on them as well ... '
WOW a man who like Austen - don't hear that everyday!!

<3 Firth <3 Wet Shirt <3

Welcome to the group :)

Alice wrote 'Emma is one of my all time ...'I am really glad as I really like it however I find many opinions feelings quite the opposite...
Which is why I started a thread on opinions of Emma in the general section! Nice to have an agreeable opinion like mine :) I like Emma as a character and I love knightly!! <3
I really don't see why people don't like Emma; she's a young, rich, popular girl in the regency era. Yes, she's going to have her problems; but, then again, don't we all? So, I like her despite her minor faults and Knightley too!!!! I'm also glad to know someone with a like minded opinion. ^_^
Yay!! I totally agree! I need someone to back me up in my thread please ;)Really glad too! Emma is 2nd almost joint 1st fav for me :) and Knightly to for Austen Men :)
Alright, I've been there. Sad how many people have just thrown her away because of a minor fault before looking closer to see what may have caused it, giving it a more understandable view. I like Emma and Elinor and Elizabeth and Catherine and...yea you get it! lol I find it hard to find much fault with any of them! X) lol
I could not agree more!!! :D so pleased you seem to agree with me totally :D I can't and don't like to find faults with them either!! :)
Alice and Rachel, Hello! Thanks for the welcome. This looks like a fun group. Soph -- Ha! No one was more surprised than me when my husband loved Austen. I figured he'd read one or two, agree that they were good, but not really his style and move along. And Emma holds a very special place in my heart. I love the book and Mr. Knightly. I'll definitely visit your thread!
I'm a firm believer Colin Firth should get wet in ALL his movies. ;)

I also am obsessed with Jane and have been since 1995. While women are a majority in the Jane Austen Society of North America (which I am a member of), there are many men in the society as well.

I can barely get my husband to watch the movies, let alone read the books or go to the convention this year in NY.
To paraphrase Elinor in Emma Thompson's version of S&S: you must be among the kindest and best of men!
One more question for Bill...How did you ever find Jane Austen? I'm a high school English teacher and a lifelong word nerd, and I've never seen a boy pick up an Austen book. Do tell!
Bill wrote: "Soph wrote: "'Hello! I've been a huge fan of Austen since junior high when I first read Emma and then Pride and Prejudice. After that there was no going back! I've lost count of the number of times..."My husband has read most of Austen's novels and has watched all the adaptations with men (well - he doesn't watch the 1995 Pride and Prejudice as often as I do. I watch it almost every month!). I'd say he likes Jane Austen a lot but I wouldn't call him a fan. He'd watch any adaptation and is getting ready to read Northanger Abbey. But he wouldn't go to the JASNA meeting.
Bill is one of our longest term members here in our GR Jane Austen group. We have had some great discussions together. I wish more men could discover that this is great literature -- not girl literature. Those who know me, know I talk about that issue a lot! :)
As well we all should Sarah!!! ;-)
Well, I am late coming to Jane Austen. I saw someone say their favorite romance was Pride and Prejudice, Pride and Prejudice, Pride and Prejudice so I figured it must be pretty good. I watched with my mom who is my favorite person to watch romance movies with and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Later, I saw Emma, which wasn't as great to us. An older neighbor is a fan of Regency novels and said Persuasion was her favorite. I hadn't seen it and she sent me the DVD. When I called to thank her, this woman in her 80's who always spoke in a dignified way that showed she thought about her words and presentation was giggling a bit like a school girl. It was a great experience and want to watch again. Well, I have never read a book, but please don't give me the boot. I found a book in a recent catalog for under $4 and should have it soon to crack the covers. I look forward to actually reading her works! Here is a quote that a friend shared on Good Reads that I saw just today."Happiness quite unshared can scarcely be called happiness; it has no taste." — Charlotte Brontë
Welcome Barbara! I am glad you enjoyed the movies. I think you will like the books - wonderful writing and more story and details than the films! Thanks for joining us here.
I appreciate the welcome, Rachel! I was thinking today how I had seen "Got Mail" so many times as it is a fave but after seeing Pride and Prejudice for the first time, it added more to my appreciation.
Yes Welcome Barbara!!and yes i agree! i apprectiated more after knowing about P&P - Got Mail is great!

I love that movie! Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor. This is the only time when I have adored both the original and the remake. You've Got Mail is fantastic with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
^The Shop Around the Corner is a FANTASTIC film, Leah! It is very romantic and hilarious in a way that doesn't have all the off-color, raunchy humor films have today. Older comedies are better that way.
I should google things before I comment, I guess it's Got Milk lol. I haven't seen that movie with Jimmy Stewart. I have seen "In the Good Old Summertime" with Judy Garland that I believe was a remake. It had the elements that I so like.
Hello. I’ve just been introduced to Goodreads by a couple of friends so I’m a bit new to this, but I’ve been reading Jane Austen for years so I thought this group might be a good place to get started. My mum bought the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice on video when I was still at school and after seeing it, I asked for the book, and went on from there. Oh and when I say the BBC version I mean the 1980’s version with Elizabeth Garvey and David Rintoul, still the best adaptation of that book, to my mind. When I started work a friend lent Pemberley to me and that was the first and last sequel I read, I hated it and I decided to stick to the originals. I like different versions and books inspired by Jane Austen though, in fact I’ve recently been reading some of Victoria Connelly’s books.
Welcome Louise! We are happy you've joined us. Look around and please join the discussion!
Hi Roseanne! I haven't seen anything about new adaptions in the news. Welcome to the group!
Hi! My name is Christina. I am a huge Jane Austen fan and so happy to have found this group. The first JA I read was Pride and Prejudice when I was in high school and it is my favorite, although I love all her stories.
Hi! My name is Lori Smith. I'm an Austen addict and a writer. I just started a giveaway here on Goodreads for my new book, The Jane Austen Guide to Life: Thoughtful Lessons for the Modern Woman. I was wondering if I could do a separate / additional giveaway here, maybe start a discussion where readers can chime in on the lessons they've learned from Jane, and give a signed copy to a randomly chosen winner. Also, if you'd be interested in having me host any other discussions, about Austen's life, about the kind of advice she might give us today, about writing -- that would be fabulous!
thanks!
Lori
Welcome Christina and Lori! We are so happy you are here! Lori - feel free to start a topic. Looking forward to hear what you have to say.
Ohhhhh this book sounds great!!! The title is intriguing. Please start a thread giving more detail about it :)
Thanks, Megan and Soph! Will go ahead and start a thread and do a giveaway here. Look forward to being part of this group!
Hi! My name is Reid and I am 19 and a total Jane Austen addict. I started reading Pride and Prejudice when I was 13 and haven't looked back. My favorite is Persuasion although I am currently rereading Pride and Prejudice (I think this may be the 5th or 6th time). I am so excited to find others that enjoy Jane's writing as much as I do!
