Hello! glad you joined the group!

'A few years ago, I got my husband hooked on them as well ... '
WOW a man who like Austen - don't hear that everyday!!
'...by handing him P&P and then showing him the BBC version (Ah, Colin Firth). '
<3 Firth <3 Wet Shirt <3
'Anyway, I never tire of talking about these books and each discussion seems to bring up something new. I'm looking forward to being here.'
I am fairly new too and have already disovered so much and i love this forum!!!! :D
Welcome to the group :)

Emma is one of my personal all-time favorites!

I am really glad as I really like it however I find many opinions feelings quite the opposite...
Which is why I started a thread on opinions of Emma in the general section! Nice to have an agreeable opinion like mine :) I like Emma as a character and I love knightly!! <3

Really glad too! Emma is 2nd almost joint 1st fav for me :) and Knightly to for Austen Men :)

I like Emma and Elinor and Elizabeth and Catherine and...yea you get it! lol I find it hard to find much fault with any of them! X) lol

Soph -- Ha! No one was more surprised than me when my husband loved Austen. I figured he'd read one or two, agree that they were good, but not really his style and move along. And Emma holds a very special place in my heart. I love the book and Mr. Knightly. I'll definitely visit your thread!
I'm a firm believer Colin Firth should get wet in ALL his movies. ;)

Thanks you! need some supporters sharing my view :) and i love it too :)

Naturally ;)

Absolutely, girl!

I also am obsessed with Jane and have been since 1995. While women are a majority in the Jane Austen Society of North America (which I am a member of), there are many men in the society as well.

Thats really good to know :) glad there are some males amoung the fans :) i don't personally have any male friends who like Austen hear in England, however i hope i will find one someday :) and if he could turn out to be like one of the Austen hero's - that would just be a bonus!!! ;)

I just joined JASNA and received its last JASNA newsletter; I have to admit to being stunned by the number of pictures that had men in them! I can barely get my husband to watch the movies, let alone read the books or go to the convention this year in NY.
To paraphrase Elinor in Emma Thompson's version of S&S: you must be among the kindest and best of men!

How did you ever find Jane Austen? I'm a high school English teacher and a lifelong word nerd, and I've never seen a boy pick up an Austen book. Do tell!

My husband has read most of Austen's novels and has watched all the adaptations with men (well - he doesn't watch the 1995 Pride and Prejudice as often as I do. I watch it almost every month!). I'd say he likes Jane Austen a lot but I wouldn't call him a fan. He'd watch any adaptation and is getting ready to read Northanger Abbey. But he wouldn't go to the JASNA meeting.
Bill is one of our longest term members here in our GR Jane Austen group. We have had some great discussions together. I wish more men could discover that this is great literature -- not girl literature. Those who know me, know I talk about that issue a lot! :)
As well we all should Sarah!!! ;-)

Welcome Barbara! I am glad you enjoyed the movies. I think you will like the books - wonderful writing and more story and details than the films! Thanks for joining us here.

and yes i agree! i apprectiated more after knowing about P&P - Got Mail is great!

Have you seen the 1940s movie its based on The Shop Around the Corner? I love that movie! Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor. This is the only time when I have adored both the original and the remake. You've Got Mail is fantastic with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.
^The Shop Around the Corner is a FANTASTIC film, Leah! It is very romantic and hilarious in a way that doesn't have all the off-color, raunchy humor films have today. Older comedies are better that way.

My mum bought the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice on video when I was still at school and after seeing it, I asked for the book, and went on from there. Oh and when I say the BBC version I mean the 1980’s version with Elizabeth Garvey and David Rintoul, still the best adaptation of that book, to my mind. When I started work a friend lent Pemberley to me and that was the first and last sequel I read, I hated it and I decided to stick to the originals. I like different versions and books inspired by Jane Austen though, in fact I’ve recently been reading some of Victoria Connelly’s books.
Welcome Louise! We are happy you've joined us. Look around and please join the discussion!
Hi Roseanne! I haven't seen anything about new adaptions in the news. Welcome to the group!

Also, if you'd be interested in having me host any other discussions, about Austen's life, about the kind of advice she might give us today, about writing -- that would be fabulous!
thanks!
Lori
