Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments But, JK Rowling has said that Voldemort is supposed to be pure evil- and that comes through extremely well. And villains are the harder character to write, although I won't say that some heros are also hard to write- you need to be aware of how your character is being described and their actions so they doesn't become a Mary Sue.

message 252: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Well yeah, Voldemort is pure evil. But she gives us the backstory behind it, instead of just saying, like many authors do, there's an evil guy, you have to kill him now. And then having the protagonist suddenly gain superpowers, have naturally purple hair, and defeat the bad guy in one fell swoop, without really trying. Yes, heroes are also very hard to write. Mary Sues are just annoying.

message 253: by natalie (new)

natalie | 5047 comments I hate Umbridge, but yeah, she's a great character. Voldy is even better, even my opinion. Yet, I hate Dolores more. Unless it's done by Joe Walker.

message 254: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Joe Walker is another story, I would say.

message 255: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Joe Walker is fantastic. :) As are all of the members of Team StarKid.

And well, technically in the HP verse, Harry could logically have purple hair and not have dyed it- Metamorphmagus's

Mary Sue's are really annoying, and I need to work on characters a bit since i was writing a fanfic and got some reviews telling me that my main characters were tending on the Mary Sue side of things.

message 256: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments Yes Harry could have purple hair that wasn't died...BUT do you really think your main character should have beaten the worst villain in the world as a baby, have a distinguishing star, be an incredible quidditch player, etc. AND be a metamorphmagus? That's when you border the realm of too much.

Mary Sues are really hard to avoid. My main character is completely a Mary Sue. (Of course, I've been working on the same story since third grade or so. Most of the writing actually takes place in my head. It was a trick I discovered to help me fall asleep.) As I've been rewriting, I'm trying to change that...but it's so bad that her whole personality is about to change, I think.

message 257: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Davis Great list! Here are some books you might consider...
To Classics: David Copperfield by Charles Dickens, Treasure Island by R.L. Stevenson, The Three Musketeers by Dumas.
To General Fiction: The Mouse and his Childe by Russell Hoban, Abel's Island by William Steig
Thanks again for the great list! Tim :)

message 258: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Yeah, that IS a bit much. It's a wonder all of that didn't go to his head. :)
Yeah, you've told us about it a while ago i think. ^_^

message 259: by Kate (new)

Kate | 8205 comments I'm sure it's all thanks to the years of suffering in the hands of the Dursleys.

I bet I have. I tend not to realize when I'm repeating myself.

message 260: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Hahah yeah, probably.

We all do that. I'm sure i repeat myself all the time.

Katerina (klymene) Stardust was pretty good. The movie was better though. It's by Neil Gaiman.

Eon by Alison Goodman is really awesome. It's essentially about a slave girl, turned really important in the Chinese Court. It's about Dragons and court intrigue and tons of evil. the Sequel is Eona

Where's Divergent?! Divergent, by Veronica Roth. I loved that book. It's another Dystopia book, but I loved the romance and the "world"

message 266: by Katerina (new)

Katerina (klymene) Shoot. I forgot these awesome asian books.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
Shanghai Girls, by Lisa See, and the sequel, Dreams of Joy

They're good, really, really, really good.

message 267: by HC (new)

HC | 56 comments The maze runner is also an amazing sifi dystopian book! It's by James dashner . Bewitching season by marissa Doyle is a good historical fiction book . It has romance and a lot of medevial court suspense

message 273: by £mily (new)

£mily (3mily991) | 1107 comments I have lost my faith in the paranormal romance genre after the disasters that were Fallen, Twilight and Hush, Hush. Why oh why do they have such pretty covers?
I think these books are like the venus fly trap. They sent out a beautiful scent (i.e pretty covers) to atrract the prey and then we, the unspecting insects/readers, come to investigate this appealing scent, then BANG! We are digested.
*Sorry to the people who like these books. Its just my opinion

message 274: by £mily (new)

£mily (3mily991) | 1107 comments Sorry for being off topic....
I will recommend a book to make up for it
Stargirl By Jerry Spinelli
This would be on my top 10 list

message 275: by Rebekah Faith (new)

Rebekah Faith (musicalradiance) | 6788 comments Emily- I actually don't mind Fallen and its sequels, but there's so much Fallen Angel books out there that i've read-- they all start to sound the same, so after Lauren Kate finishes writing the series, I plan to not read any more Fallen Angel books for quite a while.

message 276: by cy (new)

How did you like Scorpio Races? I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought it was quite good (although that may have been influenced by other things).

I looked at it and I think I did a long time ago. From what I remember it wasn't that great (but I could be wrong).
