message 36901: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain Downside Ghosts IS quite different from most UF books... the MC is a junkie... but you get invested... wish the author would finish the series so I can see how it ends...

Been reading a wide range of things recently... Finished: Concrete Evidence (Evidence, #1) by Rachel Grant Body of Evidence (Evidence, #2) by Rachel Grant Withholding Evidence (Evidence, #3) by Rachel Grant Incriminating Evidence (Evidence, #4) by Rachel Grant Silver Silence (Psy-Changeling, #16; Psy-Changeling Trinity, #1) by Nalini Singh on kindle & listened to The Never Hero (Chronicles Of Jonathan Tibbs #1) by T. Ellery Hodges The Never Paradox by T. Ellery Hodges Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey Menagerie (Menagerie, #1) by Rachel Vincent ...

Started reading Perilous Waif (Alice Long #1) by E. William Brown & listening to Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments @ Iain: what did you think of Wool? I abandoned it halfway through and never picked it up again. I found the pace a bit slow, I think.

message 36903: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain @Josie: that's why I'm not sure if/when I will finish out the trilogy... it's easier for me to finish slow books on audio since I do a lot of my listening at work, but that one was slow at times, and gloomy and a lot of death towards the end... and the 2nd book is a prequel back to the cause of the Silos and the Uprising that lost all the data before the 3rd finishes out with the continuation of the Juliet storyline...

Many more interesting books out there to hold my attention... like Illuminae... I can't recommend it enough... the audio is really good with a ton of narrators to tell the story made up of internet transcripts, interviews, wikipedia-type articles, and classified documents...

message 36904: by Josie (new)

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments @Iain: I'll give Illuminae a go, thanks! I don't think I'll ever go back to the Wool trilogy. I like my books pacy.

message 36905: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I have so many series I started and never officially quit, but haven't continued in several years now... probably won't be going back unless a whim strikes me... too many books out there to spend much time looking back unless I really like a series...

On Illuminae... the only annoying thing is how much half-blocked swearing there is... either swear or don't... don't do all this "f--k" "sh-t"

message 36906: by Josie (new)

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments Why can't they just swear?!? Is it YA?

message 36907: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain I think so... I don't understand the rules... I mean... its the same difference when books/shows make up their own swear words and can say them all they want... the rules should be universal or not exist at all...

message 36908: by Debbie (new)

Debbie M | 50 comments Started Defying Pack Law I enjoy Eve's books they are good, quick fun reads. (and awesome "coupling" lol)

Sassy Sarah Reads Iain wrote: "I think so... I don't understand the rules... I mean... its the same difference when books/shows make up their own swear words and can say them all they want... the rules should be universal or not..."

I actually think it's because they are government classified documents. It could also be looked at from a satirical standpoint on how the government likes to suppress words for their benefit, kind of like American TV.

Danielle (danieseba) | 2 comments I just finished the Otherworld series, Moon Shimmers. She is expecting to release two more.

That is good to know about the Argenaeu  series. I have that on my plan to read, and I have two of the books in the middle of the series.

message 36912: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain @Sarah: I meant censorship in general more than the book in specific...

You can't say fuck... but frack is fine in Battlestar Galactica, or Silent Night, Stars & Stones, and Hell's Bells are the three swear phrases in Dresden Files...

I realize those are 2 completely different levels of swear words... the Battlestar Galactica one is designed to make you think fuck in your head... and when a word does that, or a bleep... why censor it at all... everybody KNOWS...

@Danielle: Argeneau Vampires is great... I think most books can be read standalone... altho as the series has progressed it has created some ongoing bad guys that have recurred before being taken care of... and all the main characters are related, however distantly, and there tends to be a lot of cameos...

message 36914: by Christy (new)

Christy (christy_kennedy) | 184 comments Finished Silver Silence (Psy-Changeling, #16; Psy-Changeling Trinity, #1) by Nalini Singh and to my surprise, I found this book a little 'wanting'. I could not connect to the bears nor to Silver. This shocked me, because I always appreciated the character of Silver Mercant and looked forward to meeting the bears, but both in this book did not make a good combination for me. The reader is reminded frequently of the high intelligence of the bears, and there were a few that delivered on that description, but Valentin still came across as a 'lunk head', I liked him, but he seemed all brawn and very little brains. Also, I found that the story had a few small areas of 'dead space' like the author had a story to tell and then...nothing. Kaleb Krycheck was a bit muted and normally his presence in any book was powerful. Otherwise, the rest of the book was very good...not great like all her other books, but good. I love the Psy/Changling series as well as The Guild Hunter series and this author enthralls me with her writing, story telling, world building and character development, but this book fell a little short for me. Still looking forward to future books in the Trinity series.

Nadine Parker (vampirelover1) | 29 comments *sigh* I'm still reading City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2) by Cassandra Clare and Wicca for Beginners A Guide to Wiccan Beliefs, Rituals, Magic, and Witchcraft by Lisa Chamberlain . I'm not sure why, but I'm not reading very fast right now. I'm getting close to the end of City of Ashes and hoping to start book three soon.

Yes, it wasn't as good as her other stories. Still, I enjoyed it.

Claudia Ayala (claudia_ayala) | 149 comments I re-read Rhapsodic (The Bargainer, #1) by Laura Thalassa and then finished A Strange Hymn (The Bargainer, #2) by Laura Thalassa . I enjoyed them.

Just finished Ever Night by Gena Showalter and it was disappointing. I confess I’m getting tired of potentially good stories that end up being an excuse to write about sex, the plot being just a secondary item.

message 36935: by Josie (new)

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments I always find that with Gena Showalter's books, so I don't read them anymore. For me, there's too much sex, not enough story.

You're right. I don't know why, but this year I've struggled to find new good stories.

Same here. The first few books for the Anita Blake series were great and then you said it --- "I felt like I was rereading the same book over and over." >>> Exactly my reason for stopping with the series.

message 36943: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain @Shari Kay: I felt similarly when I got around to continuing past book 5... quit at book 9... should have kept to my first instinct
