Amac | 39 comments Sorry for the wall of text here...

This is what is strange to me. Readers are upset about the ending of BDB #13, yet it wasn't un-expected. She foreshadowed since that character had been introduced. Also, why aren't her readers more upset that, with the exception of a few, the women in this series are set pieces to show how layered and human the men are and if she has the 'balls' to do _that_ which she has done to TWO lead female characters she has not done with any of the male lead characters.

I'm not trying to call out Kimberly, I apologize if it appears that way. A lot of people do not like the book because of the ending and it seems there are other factors to be critical of, in my opinion, than the lack of the standard/expected romance ending.

Interestingly enough, JR Ward has admitted her lack of ability to write female characters and I'm more upset she didn't take the chance to make a stronger, more interesting female lead by swapping what happened to the female to happen to the male...y'know?

Also, she wrote a vlog on GR explaining what happened in the book was something that happened IRL and I think she was explaining that she was dealing with that RL stuff in her DBD-verse and I can respect that.

Veronica Rosa (veronicadelrosa) Honestly JR Ward lost me as a fan after The King. I was on the fence after Tohrment's mess of a book, but now I'm done.

Ward does have horrible female characters. They are just there to prop up the men and show how badass they are.

Kayleigh (lydialeigh257) | 2 comments I'll be honest, I was enjoying JR Ward's stuff up until book 6 - I started it and then things started to get a bit weird. I mean, what was up with the Wizard? I still haven't finished it and don't know if I'm ever going to go back to.

Currently into Sherrylin Kenyon's Dark-Hunter series, on book 5 Kiss of the Night (Dark-Hunter, #4) by Sherrilyn Kenyon . I'm really enjoying this series, but I'm definitely noticing parallels between this one and the BDB series.

Talltree | 24 comments I just finished Shifting Dreams (Cambio Springs, #1) by Elizabeth Hunter , it was a good PNR, had good worldbuilding with a few native American elements, just wish the author hadn't made it into a whodunnit romantic suspense book and focused on the romance and paranormal stuff more.

message 35056: by Phe (new)

Phe | 22 comments I recently read Dark Soul (Reap, #1) by David Shawn McConnell , a blend of urban fantasy, action, suspense and romance that revolves around Michael Petro, a contract killer for an organized crime syndicate who in an ironic twist of fate dies at the hands of a fellow assassin. Subsequently, the story focuses on his induction into the supernatural world of reapers, his struggle to remain relevant in the life of the woman he loves, and more importantly, his fight to protect her against the danger in which she’s been placed.

A debut novel, Dark Soul contains some common mistakes often made by new authors, but the story was very promising and I find myself looking forward to reading more by this author.

Arielle Rae Aguilar | 230 comments Finished The Shadows (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #13) by J.R. Ward ... Still a bit numb, so I don't know what I feel about what happened to.. Y'know... Goodness, I bawled my heart out
I have to say, I'm glad I didn't read the last page like I normally do, since I would regret not reading this book
Kudos to Ward though; she's got guts doing that, and the way she executed it was well done (I'm not as mad as I would be if it was by an author who I don't consider a favorite of mine...loyalty I guess?)
And I can't wait for Paradises' book!

Now rereading Kushiel's Chosen (Phèdre's Trilogy, #2) by Jacqueline Carey

I've read this Archangel (Samaria, #1) by Sharon Shinn series, this series Troubled Waters (Elemental Blessings, #1) by Sharon Shinn , and this series The Truth-Teller's Tale (Safe-Keepers, #2) by Sharon Shinn and they were all really good!
I don't know about the one you're reading though (but it's in my TBR), but she's a great author, and if you're not feeling that series, maybe you should try her other ones :)

Hi Shari,
I quite like her work. I already read her Hearts & Thrones series. But, I like Fire Seers more because the plots are thicker. I feel that there is more depth to the characters in this series. She gives more detail of the past experience of the characters which leads to their decision and behavior. I really enjoy reading them and finished fairly quickly.

Xen Randell (xeniya) | 16 comments I started King's The Gunslinger , first of his "Dark Tower" series, one of his books (series) I haven't read before (started reading in english only a few years ago, and many books aren't translated to Croatian). However, I have such a hard time with it. Everybody said that I had to endure the first book, that it gets better (and much, much better), but I dunno, I guess I'm not into it right now.
Then I started (and finished) the frist two books of the UF series "Penryn and the End of Days" Angelfall , loved it.
I have opened J.R.Ward's The Shadows , but that's as far as I got for now. Need to keep reading but don't have enough time these days :(

Shelley | 4 comments I am currently reading Rose & Thunder by Lilith Saintcrow and really enjoying it. Fantasy with possible romance (I am just over halfway) and a definite fairy tale feel in a contemporary setting. I did just finish J R Ward's The Shadows. It does depend on the reader being familiar with the other books in the series to make sense. ######possible spoiler##### I would also class it as urban fantasy as it does not have an HEA for all the characters. But, it was a compelling read.

Claudia Ayala (claudia_ayala) | 149 comments Just finished reading Darkfever (Fever, #1) by Karen Marie Moning , Bloodfever (Fever, #2) by Karen Marie Moning , Faefever (Fever, #3) by Karen Marie Moning , Dreamfever (Fever, #4) by Karen Marie Moning and Shadowfever (Fever, #5) by Karen Marie Moning . I enjoyed them a lot, although they seemed more like one long book than a series, because each one lacked of some kind of ending. I’m glad I waited until all of them where published.

For now, I think I won’t continue with the next trilogy; I’m not a fan of Dani and I think the story ended well as it did.

Now I’m looking for what to read next, so I´m checking some of your reviews to get some ideas. ;)
