Kate really is such a bad ass! But this scene had me in a complete gigglefest:

The vampire stared at me, his mouth slack as Ghastek assessed his options. I took a couple of forms from my desk, put them into the vamp’s mouth, and pulled them up by their edges.

“What are you doing?” Ghastek asked.

“My hole puncher broke.”

I was put off by the narrator's voice at first, too. Like you said it just seemed to soft for kick-ass Kate, but there were some scenes where I realized it actually worked really well. Although, I still think Curran's voice should be a little stronger, maybe faster, than how she does it. But I loved her Derek.

As for Mercy, too much of a hard-ass? Really? Why do you feel that? I actually really like Mercy because as tough as she is, she doesn't let stupid pride get in the way of doing the right thing. Some of these kick-ass heroine's are so stubborn and so prideful and insist that they must do everything themselves and will bite a guys head off before accepting some help. But Mercy usually seems to recognize when she needed some extra muscle, and is willing to back down if it's necessary to diffuse a situation. Like if the wolves are about to lose it, she backs down or even acts submissive if it's necessary to help them regain control, and it doesn't bother her because she knows in the end she's going to to what she wants anyway.

Kate and Mercy are my two favorite UF kick-ass chicks!

I love Kate. I want to ask you if you got to a certain part, but I don't want to spoil it if you didn't. It involves Curran getting "revenge" for something Kate did to his weights.

The first time I read book 1 it only got a 3 star from me. But then when I reread it after I finished the series I upgraded. I think it's because I felt like I knew all the other character then. I think the series really gets good at book 3 and they get better and better after.

I am told that Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens and Effortless (Thoughtless, #2) by S.C. Stephens compare to Fifty Shades of Grey (Fifty Shades, #1) by E.L. James . I started Dead Witch Walking (The Hollows, #1) by Kim Harrison awhile back and must not have been in the mood for and put it down. A few months later I picked it up again and it clicked and I read all the books that were out at that time. I get in moods that change the way I feel about a book. I'll sometimes read the first few chapters of several books before I find the one I'm in the mood for. Thank goodness for the ability to sample books on Amazon before buying them for my Kindle :)

As to the Hollows series, I really enjoyed Book 1 but wasn't able to get into book 2. Need to pick it up again.

When I started the Hallow series, I didn't know that it was a series and picked up the third one and read it first. Loved it went back got the first two and since then haven't looked back.

I really think that the mood your in make a total difference when it comes to reading a book. I have read things that the first time I read it I thought they were okay but when I went back to reread I loved them.

With the Hallows I think that the furthur you get in the better it gets, that's not to say that they are great. I have definitly liked some more than others. I think my favorite at the moment was the last one I read which was Pale Demon. I can't wait for the new one to come out in paperback.
Hopefully you'll give then another chance.

It definitely gets better. I was like that too bc I wasn't familiar with the Fae background, the missing queen and all of their magic, realms and other technicallities. After the first 2 bks and while waited for the 3rd book, I read Moning's Highlander series, not that you have to, I just loved Moning's writing style and storytelling by this point. I thought her Highlander series shed more lights into the characters and the background stories leading up to the Fever...plus I loved her highlander series too.
