Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Starting Pack Challenge and Good Ghoul's Get Even. Just finished Bitten which halfway through the book I felt like i've read this book before and that's when it hit me. Stray by Rachel Vincent is almost exactly like Bitten. I mean yeah some books will be similiar when dealing with the same creatures/topics but the only difference between these books were pretty much Names,Location, a minor difference in plot , and the shifters involved but everything else read the same. I enjoyed both they're great shifter books to read but I mean come on we clearly see where somone got their ideas from.

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm reading Burnt Offerings, book 7 in the Anita Blake series. I'll finish it today and start the next one, Blue Moon. I am loving these books and flying through them.

message 453: by Christie (new)

Christie Silvers (christiesilvers) I finished Sookie last week and now I'm on to "Undead and Unworthy" by MaryJanice Davidson. :-)

Christie
Author of the Alex & Fiona series

CJ - It's only a Paper Moon (bookewyrm) | 57 comments I'm currently on Linnea Sinclair's "The Down Home Zombie Blues" because I needed a break from my Stephanie Plum fixation.

However, I haven't started "Down Home..." yet and I am sorely tempted to run to B&N or Borders for either "Blood Lite" (I think that's out by now) or "Wolfbane & Mistletoe"....and if they don't have that "Cast in Fury".

Ugh.

So. To combat the temptation and the lack of motivation to read - I've decided to just write the 13th chapter of my story and hope for the best :)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) starting Stolen by Armstrong and Go Fetch by shelly laurenston

message 456: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) I've finished the intro to House of Leaves and had to put it aside as I'm alone the next week and a half yet. The intro was already giving me the heebie-jeebies.

I'm now working through Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr. So far, so good.

CJ - It's only a Paper Moon (bookewyrm) | 57 comments Ugh. So Blood Lite isn't out in NYC until the 21st. *headdesk* I was very much looking forward to starting that. Oh well. I'm going to wait on the Wolfbane & Mistletoe just because I'm nowhere near in the holiday mood.

I read "Through the Glass, deadly" by Sarah Atwell. It's a Cozy Mystery centered around a glassblower. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it.

I'm going to buckle down and read "Down Home Zombie Blues".

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Just finished Go, Fetch! by Shelly Laurenston and Now I'm reading the third book in her Magnus Pack series called Here Kitty, Kitty!. this is a great and fun shifter series.

message 459: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Rose (amandarose) | 10 comments just started anita blake series.... im on guilty pleasures and from the first few chapters i think im gonna like this book =0)...

message 460: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Amanda, I've just finished the 8th book in the Anita Blake series and I'm loving them. I know everyone says the series changes after the 9th book but I don't care. I'm going to read the whole series because I'm so invested in all of the characters now and can't imagine stopping in the middle. Enjoy the books.

message 461: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 39 comments Lori, you'll understand once you get a few more books in. I have 10+ yrs invested in these characters, and love the series. What aggravates me is I know what an amazing writer LKH is, so when she makes me wait a year for *CRAP* that doesn't even pertain to the story,or 50 pages of recaps, and 20 chapters of porn then yeah, I get aggravated.

Keep reading, you'll see.

message 462: by Heather (last edited Oct 14, 2008 06:15AM) (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments Not everyone thinks it's crap and porn.... Different from the beginning of the series? certainly... but never crap, and porn is in the eye of the beholder (or reader).

Anyhoo.... Just started the Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance. I wasn't impressed with the first 2 stores... reading the 3rd one now, hopefully I'll like it.

Edit: just passed the halfway mark and I think I've discovered something ---- I don't like short stories. As soon as I get vested in the characters, the story ends :( That being said, I've only really enjoyed a few of the stories in this book. Oh well, live 'n learn, right?

message 463: by LilMisGrayBrisk (last edited Oct 15, 2008 06:55PM) (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I just started reading Gideon by Jaquelyn Frank. It's the 2nd book in her Nightwalkers series.

message 464: by Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (last edited Oct 16, 2008 05:52AM) (new)

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Amy- I'm surprised i made it throough Stolen. The hostage story really dragged It picked back up a little when Clay and Elena met back up. I really like their relationship. Would I miss anything important if I jump from Stolen to Broken? I really like reading about the wolves than the witches.

message 465: by Christie (new)

Christie Silvers (christiesilvers) Now I'm on to Lori Handeland's "Any Given Doomsday."

Christie
Author of the Alex & Fiona series

message 466: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I just started book 10 of the Anita Blake series, Narcissus in Chains. This one started out with a bang! Yippee! I had mixed feelings about Obsidian Butterfly. I enjoyed learning more about Edward but there was no romance, no sex and I really missed all the boys. I'm so happy that she's back in St. Louis and back with all of the characters that I've grown to love.

message 467: by Margaret (new)

Margaret | 2 comments I just finished Blood Lust by J. M. Jeffries it's a fantastic read. I've got a thing for vampires, it mixes forbidden love with a totally different type of Vampire. The rules have changed we have vampire's hunting Vampires. I wish that the author had made this into a series.

message 468: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany (shigyrl30) I am currently reading Kissing Sin by Keri Arthur, I am liking the series so far.

message 469: by Amie (new)

Amie (amiestuart) | 44 comments Just started Kelley Armstrong's Bitten--I loved her YA so much I had to check out her other books

message 470: by [deleted user] (new)

I am in the process of reading several different series. I am waiting till my book 8 comes in of the Sookie Stackhouse series. I had to special order it. Same with book 3 of the Anita Blake books. My local book store doesn't have crap so I always have to special order my books. I am also waiting for book 12 of the Vampire Huntress Series by LA Banks to come out. I love these books

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Finally reading Richelle Meads' Storm Born, it's good so far. I 'm thinking this will be another Mead series I'll enjoy reading

message 472: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 75 comments Lori, I had the exact same reaction to "Obsidian Butterfly". It was a good story, but I was missing all the characters that were home in St. Louis. For that reason I'm always wary every time Laurell mentions bringing in Edward. He seems to pull the focus away from the rest of the group.

Jael, I agree. Kelley Armstrong's wolves are much more fun than her other supernatural creatures. I don't believe you would have too much trouble skipping from "Stolen" to "Broken".

message 473: by Evelina (new)

Evelina | 5 comments hmm...i'm working on j.r. ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood right now. Amazing. I just finished Lover Awakened and it's my favorite so far, but I'm dying to read the others.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) Amy- Thanks that's good to know. I do plan on reading every book in the series but right now I can't focus on anything else but Elena and the gang. Once i finish Broken I'll go back and read the others. I haven't read the story in MBFSW but now I think I'll have to pick it up. I know in Many Bloody Returns she focuses on the vamps introduced in Stolen.

Unapologetic_Bookaholic AMY: I like the writing style, plot, and charters of L A BANKS and the vampire huntress series. It takes me a while to get through each one b/c I actually have to read through each word, lol, no speed reading through her books for me. They do get bogged down with information but I think well don't skip it b/c I might need to know it later. And she does give such wonderful imagery.

Now reading: All She Wants : Ellora's Cave

Any Given Doomsday

The Hunted

message 476: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I'm currently reading Megan's Mark by Lora Leigh.

message 477: by Lori (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) I'm on book 12 of the Anita Blake series. I think they just keep getting better and better. I love them so much it's really hard for me to understand all of the complaints she got when they started getting more sexual. I guess if you really hate sex in your books you wouldn't like them but I'm so invested in the characters now that I can't imagine giving up on the series. It seems like a natural progression to me and each book makes me just want more...more of everything. I'm a goodreads purvette though so I guess maybe that speaks volumes

message 478: by Malena (new)

Malena (badgalmalmal) I'm up to Lover Awakend (book 3) of J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Addictive!

message 479: by Heather (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments Finished up The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance -- wasn't too impressed, I liked a few of the stories, but overall they left me either not engaged at all... or engaged, but waiting for more, and ultimately let down.

Now onto Keri Arthur's Beneath a Rising Moon. I LOVE her Riley Jensen series, and this one is turning out to be almost as good :0)

message 480: by Yz the Whyz (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 1020 comments Mod
Almost about to finish the second book of Nalini Singh's Psy/Changeling series Visions of Heat. Definitely another series I will be following avidly.

Evelina and Mel, Lover Awakened is my fave among the BDB books, and Z holds a special place in my heart.

message 481: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments I've just started Gideon, which is book two in Jacquelyn Frank's Nightwalkers series. I'm liking the series enough so far, but they're sort of a poor man's Lords of the Underworld (series by Gena Showalter). Some of the lovey-doviness of the Nightwalkers series is a bit too sappy for me; I like how LOTU is grittier. Just my opinion though. I still like them enough to continue with the series, so I can't really complain. At least not loudly...

message 482: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Walker (wykedgoddess05) | 10 comments I just finished the second book in L.A.Banks crimson moon series.. " Bite the bullet." WOW oh WOW .. Im so loving her take on a native american version of a werewolf.. Very military , lots of fight scenes.. romance you name it If you havent started these .. PLEASE do .. Now i impatiently wait till april 2009 For the 3rd book !

message 483: by new_user (new)

new_user | 1389 comments Hey, Jennifer, that's exactly the reason Frank's Nightwalkers series wasn't really a hit for me. She would get edgy now and then and then immediately fall back on sappiness, lest anyone think her books too "dark." I'm thinking more and more that I'll like LOTU (despite having read Heart Of The Dragon and not really enjoying it- too fluffy). I hear LOTU is much different. Thanks for your thoughts. :)

message 484: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments Jennifer, I agree with you regarding Frank's Nightwalker series. They are definitely too sappy, but I still want to read them. I have Showalter's series in my TBR pile but I haven't gotten to them yet.

message 485: by Heather (new)

Heather (fantasy_mom) | 28 comments Finished up Keri Arthur's Beneath a Rising Moon last night. Very enjoyable - not quite as good as the Riley Jensen books, but I loved it just the same ^_^

Now onto Laura Stamp's The Witches of Dixie!

message 486: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jen421) | 201 comments Then, I highly recommend Lords of the Underworld to both of you. They're sharp and edgy, with great well developed characters and a fast paced plot, with a good overall story arc. They have all the gritty realism that the Nightwalkers series lacks.

message 487: by Carol (new)

Carol Evans | 4 comments I just finished Visions of Heat by Nalini Singh. I love this series, so far.

message 488: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Wright (rhwright16) I'm reading Rebel Angels by Libba Bray. It's book 2 in the Gemma Doyle series. The first is a Great and Terrible Beauty. The series is pretty good so far. It's YA but I'm still enjoying it. I'm also working on the first Harry Potter.

message 489: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished reading Immortals: The Darkening by Robin T. Popp. It was my second in that series and I plan to buy the next one soon. This installment features Lexi, a bounty hunter who also is a werewolf and her connecting to Darius, one of the immortals. I liked this story because it has plenty of action and is also a love story for the ages.

message 490: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments Thanks Jennifer. I will make sure to move them up. I'm going to start reading Jewel of Atlantis by Gena Showalter. This is the 2nd book in her Atlantis series.

message 491: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 24, 2008 08:14PM) (new)

I'm trying for the third time to get into something by Laurel K. Hamilton. I'm sorry, this title, Mistral's Kiss, is just boring. Am I missing something? Can anyone suggest a better book to start with this author?

Other books, I'm reading or just finished:

(These are ebooks, though I think both are available in trade pb)

Beyond the Reef, by AJ Llewellyn. Very sexy, M/M erotica. You'll laugh and cry.

Midnight Rose, by Shelby Reed. I'm always reading this one. Finish it and start again.

The hold in your hand kind:

Haunted, by Chuck Palahniuk

The Time Traveler's Wife, by Audrey Niffenegger

both of the above are well worth the read.

This is my first post to this group. Nice to meet ya'll.

ali

Only One Regret, my own paranormal romance about a musician and the ghost of his ex-lover, is available in ebook on Oct 26 at http://amberquill.com/AmberAllure/Onl...

message 492: by gtrachel (new)

gtrachel I just digested all of Alexis Morgan's Paladins series (4 books out right now). Yummy dark heroes and crazy twisting plots. Definitely awesome additions to any PNR library. :)

message 493: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ali - Mistral's Kiss won't mean a thing unless you have read each book in that series. You HAVE to start with the first one!

message 494: by LilMisGrayBrisk (new)

LilMisGrayBrisk | 502 comments I gave up on Jewel of Atlantis. I don't know what I want to read now.

message 495: by Lori (last edited Oct 27, 2008 09:58AM) (new)

Lori (moderatrixlori) Ali, if you're going to read Laurell, either series, you have to read them in order from the very first book. I'm a huge Anita Baker fan but it was a slowly building love affair for me. Guilty Pleasures, the first book in the series, was enjoyable but it wasn't until I'd read a few more in the series that I really got hooked. These books are really about relationships so if you don't start in the beginning, you'll miss so much. I'm still reading them and they are my own personal heroin. Don't let some of the reviews of her later books throw you. If you truly understand the characters and their growth and development, then you'll become invested in them and understand why Laurell took the path she did with them.

message 496: by mlady_rebecca (new)

mlady_rebecca | 75 comments I agree with Lori, you really need to read Laurell K. Hamilton's books in order.

I've noticed a lot of people in this group talk about urban fantasy and paranormal romance books as if they're interchangeable. They're not. At least from the sampling of both types of series I've read, urban fantasy books tend to focus on the same people and build a lot between books. They should be read in order. Paranormal romance books are much more loosely coupled. You can read them out of order and enjoy each individual story, although you might get more out of the series if you read them in order.

Of course, above and beyond that, paranormal romances are romances at their heart. That means you're going to get a one man/ one woman happily ever after at the end. Urban fantasy tends to pattern relationships more like they are in the real world. They ebb and flow. Some survive and other die too soon.

message 497: by [deleted user] (new)

The book I am currently reading is Faefever by Karen Marie moning. It is the third in a trilogy. The first was Bloodfever, then Darkfever. I was really looking forward to reading the latest book, and I have not been disappointed. The heroine is MacKayla (Mac) Layne, who has traveled to Ireland in hopes of finding out who killed her sister, Alina, who was going to school there. Little does she know that this trip will change her life so drastically. In the first book she discovered that she was a very powerful sidhe-seer. She also learns that she is not who she thought she was, and neither was her sister. Mac teams up with a mysterious man and she has many questions about who or what he really is. She also teams up with a beautiful death-by-sex fairy prince, V'lane, who she is also uncertain about - all in a quest to find a powerful hallow that could lead to the destruction of the world.

Kim | 57 comments I just finished Erin Quinn's (who also writes as Erin Grady) Echoes - gothic PNR, with a western twist. I won it in her web contest, having never read any of her books before, and I was totally captivated. Very well written and a mystery to boot!
Quite an enjoyable read!!
