I've been laid up with a terrible bout of asthma, which I get every 5 or 6 years or so. Then it disappears and I'm fine, and then it comes back. I can't tell if it's just my hormones going up and down that sets it off, or if there's a plant that pollinates every 5 years. Very strange. So as soon as it goes, I will get to walking.

message 4652: by [deleted user] (new)

That's no fun! I'm glad it's such an infrequent occurrence, Hayes. Hope it goes away, soon.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Yikes, when I miss a couple of days, it can be crazy trying to catch up with everyone. Briefly, Laura, the proofreading for Project Gutenberg sounds fascinating. I am going to give that some more thought. Hayes, so sorry to hear your asthma has reared its ugly head. I hope you are back at full speed very soon. Christine, kudos to you on your walking. Mine been kind of hit and miss, but I'm determined to hang in there and get back in a good routine. Jeannette, I'm starting a new food plan, too. I'm trying to cut back on carbs some, not really a low-carb diet, just cutting back. Also, I hope to get control of snacking at night while I read or watch TV.

I got my first actual kiss from my grandbaby this past weekend. I told her to give Grammy a kiss and she did. Ah, heaven!

message 4654: by [deleted user] (new)

Yay for grandbaby kisses! I still remember the first time my daughter patted my face with her little hand.

Did anyone see JK Rowling on Oprah last Friday? I am probably the only person on the planet who has never read a Harry Potter book - but after seeing that interview, I am going to take the time and finally start to read the series.

Shelley, the 7 books series is one of my favorite books. I think I'm going to do a read after both HP 7 movies. I love the movies but I adore the books, and they have to leave out so much in the movies. Even though they'll be able to include more content in the 2 part HP 7 movie than if they'd done it in 1 movie, I'd rather have my last memories be of the books.

Brenda | 286 comments Hey Lisa I am with you it is definantly my favorite book. In another group we were discussing about where she might write another book. Should it be Hogwarts history, founders, Harry's parents or children? Any thoughts? I am with the first two.

I think a Harry Potter prequel could work; the story is all there and it would be fun to learn more about their years at Hogwarts.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm satisfied with the 7 books. I'd love a book where J.K. Rowling puts out everything else she knows: before, during, and after the events in the 7 book story.

Hey, Christine, how did the book club go? Did you finally find something to read?

message 4669: by Kathy (new)

Jeannette wrote: "Hey, Christine, how did the book club go? Did you finally find something to read?"

Book club was great fun, as it always is. The next book chosen is one that I actually had to order (and Amazon doesn't have it so I was directed to a used book site)...who knows how long it will take to get here. I have been spending way to much time looking at my bookshelves. I know it's only been a week, but I hate not reading.

I've had some continuing frustration with the middle school this week, and I think that has me off track. I can't relax.

Yesterday I did the daycare-sub thing for my neighbor, so I got to spend my day with the baby. That was tons of fun. Today I am volunteering at the high school. Then tomorrow I go to school with Benjamin for Parent's Day. I hope that I can control myself and that there is no bloodshed.

Have a great start!

Christine, are the problems at school with the same teacher as last time? If yes, I think you might have to start being a bit more heavy-hitting. Good luck with parents' day and finding a book to read. For me, if I cannot decide what to read, am not relaxing, or in a slump, I usually end up rereading one of my all-time favourites, like L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, or Emily of New Moon (and, the criticism of the school system and some of the teachers in those novels might be just what you need).

message 4674: by [deleted user] (new)

I wondered where you had been, Christine. Be a good girl on Parents' Day! Just keep slugging at them behind the scenes! Don't give up! I hope your latest book works out, too.

Gundula -- You really got my husband started on a Rex Stout kick! He has read about a dozen since you recommended them to me. I will be reading one after I finish my current book.

Have a wonderful day, everyone! The weather in Iowa is supposed to be sunny and warm -- perfect fall weather. :)

I wonder if it might be a good idea to try to get a discussion with Benjamin's teacher, yourself and some of the experts who assess and work with him. That might clear up some misunderstandings, and if not, it might scare this teacher into acting a bit more professionally. Unfortunately, with some people, especially those who believe they are "experts" and have an inflated opinion of themselves, the heavy-handed, threatening approach is the only way to get through. On the other hand, you also want to make sure that this is not a teacher who will take frustrations out on your son (you know, you become more heavy-hitting, and she takes it out on Benjamin). Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Wow, I've only ever read about four of his works, maybe I'll see if the library has more of them. I'm impressed, and I'm glad that the recommendation worked for your husband.

message 4678: by [deleted user] (new)

He liked them so much, he's pressing me to read more of them. He has also been reading excerpts out loud for me and asking me if I know some of the more outdated terminology, like hoosegow! :)

message 4679: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to hear that this same teacher is giving you and Benjamin so much trouble, Christine! It can't be easy getting this woman to hear reason, keep your temper, and shield your son from all of it. I hope you find some vocal allies among the other teachers.

Is there a way that you could dual-enroll Benjamin for part-time, and just do some of the classes and homeschool for the rest. People do that here as a way to transition their kids into school. But, please, don't let me add to your stress level! The best solution is to bring this woman around. I hope it happens soon.

Interesting how many slang words there are for "jail."

message 4683: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, just remember to be polite and clean up the blood after it is spilled. LOL! Being a mom, a good mom, sure is hard work sometimes, but our kids are worth it. Benjamin is lucky to have you in his corner.

Hubby comes in for a visit tomorrow night, 4-day weekend, so we will be seeing grandkids and getting a little done around the house. I'm loving the weather right now and look forward to maybe getting in a couple of good walks with hubby. I get to do Boo at the Zoo with my daughter and the girls in 10 days. Can't wait!

message 4684: by [deleted user] (new)

slammer, lock-up, the pen (short for penitentiary), the big house (again, penitentiary), hoosegow -- these are the ones off the top of my head. I am sure there are a few British words that I'll think of later and there is always Knast, which led me to clink, a word I haven't heard in forever. I may have watched too many old movies in my day, as well as bad tv shows.

Good afternoon all you comfy readers! The sun is shining after 3 straight days of rain and I am sitting at my dining room enjoying a hot cup of tea while I look out my new front window. Yesterday I received my first piece of mail at the new house and then ran to the library to get a new card. We are living in box world but the house is lovely and the neighbourhood is quite peaceful for being in the city. I hope you all have had a great week, I have lots to catch up on. xoxo
