So, Kathy, did Christine have to sneeze on the dummy doctor today?

message 4102: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, What a lovely experience. It always makes me feel good about people when things like that happen. I'm sorry you didn't get the things you needed though.

Wow, that is generous! It's wonderful to run into truly kind people.

I needed the milk, and was able to buy it. It was very generous of this lovely young woman. :)

Well, we'll wait for the grisly details.....

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments You all are too funny! No sneezing needed though. It actually went very well. I, of course, brought up the weight issue because I felt like it would be the elephant in the room (no pun intended, ha ha) if I didn't. He was surprisingly human about it and we talked about exercise as being the element most necessary at our ages (he even brought in that he didn't like going to the gym but had to). So, I felt better. I thought that since I was stressed out, my normally low blood pressure would be higher. Ha, ha. It was 102/62, even lower than usual. A friend and I went out to eat, out of town, and had a lovely time afterward. It was a high-end restaurant (we girls just sometimes need a treat) and I was able to get cobia, a fish that I hadn't had since Christmas in Key West a few years ago. OK, I admit that we also split a piece of Key lime pie. Hmm, I see a theme here.

Jeannette, what a nice experience! People can pleasantly surprise us sometimes, can't they? Christine, sorry you didn't get to sneeze. LOL!

message 4108: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad things worked out for you and your elephant friend, Kathy! That's the key: exercise. I just wish I enjoyed it like my husband does. But, this fall weather has me walking a lot more! You have blood pressure like my husband. A nurse asked him once if he was a long-distance runner. lol

Hope you are feeling better today, Sneezey! :)

I just got home from my neighbor's where I was a substitute-babysitter this morning. Yes, I know I'm sick. They knew I was sick (I gave full disclosure!), but the baby and I both have a cold so we managed. Anyway, now I want another baby. She is six months old, and an absolute doll! So cute and sooo good!

I'm off to post my short review for The Kitchen House. It was hard to write much without spoilers, but I wanted to give it the praise it deserves.

Kathy, I am glad that your doctor wasn't sneeze-worthy. ;)
Jeannette, we should make an exercise pact. I need to light the fire under me.

message 4110: by [deleted user] (new)

Sure, Christine, I just got the mini-riot act from my gyn. I have to go back in 3 months for a bp re-check and she would like it if I was not in the stroke-zone in her office. You are home all day, we could commit to walking 1/2 hour every day, just as a start?

So, do you really want another baby? :)

message 4111: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy, glad everything went all right.

Walking... can I join in? I need your fire, Christine! to get me off my large posterior! S goes back to school tomorrow morning so I will have my mornings at home to myself (yay!).

message 4112: by [deleted user] (new)

Hayes, you will have to go first and report in, just due to your time zone! I hope you are up to rallying me and Christine. I will report on my evening walks, too, to keep you inspired! :)

I'm an old lady, so I'll have to wait for the grandchildren days. I can't imagine a baby at 42, although I guess some people do it.

I'll commit to 1/2 hour everyday!

message 4114: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll be doing morning walks. The afternoon and evenings get nutty and I'm sure I'd find excuses to skip it. Are we starting tomorrow?

message 4115: by [deleted user] (new)

Tomorrow is a bad day for me (excuses, excuses!) I'll try to get a walk in during the afternoon, but I don't think it's likely. I'll start for sure Friday morning. I'll do 30 mins as well.

My sister had #11 at the age of 46. *gak*

Report in on your walking progress!! good luck! :) No demerits for not walking, just gold stars for doing this! I don't want anyone hiding out because they missed several days (weeks) of exercise. Anyone else in?

message 4118: by [deleted user] (new)

Christine wrote: "Is anyone in Texas? Yikes, the flooding!"

Where is it flooding now? I have friends in 3 different areas of Texas, but I haven't seen the news yet.

message 4119: by [deleted user] (new)

Dallas is the one I have seen coverage of. It looks terrible.

message 4120: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess cupcakes for walking would not be a good idea. (mumble grumble)

message 4121: by [deleted user] (new)

Nor brownies, I suppose.

I have a GR friend in Plano, but she hasn't mentioned floods. Of course, Dallas is huge! I'll check it out.

message 4122: by [deleted user] (new)

I did my walking! I actually did about 40 minutes just because if I stopped at 30 then I wouldn't have been home, haha!

message 4123: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey good for you! That's a great plan. I'll be going out later, so thanks for the nudge! :)

message 4124: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments I'm in for the walking. I've actually started walking more this week, as the temps have cooled down. I usually do a little in the morning, 15 minutes and then 15 minutes in the late afternoon. This schedule coincides with taking my dog out for short walks. The walks will probably increase to 20 min. each time, and I may change it up entirely, but I will get in 30 min. of good walking time at least.

Christine, my image of you walking and eating a cupcake at the same time is hilarious.

Jeannette wrote: "Yes, with frosting on the tip of her nose! :D"

How did you know? Are you spying on me?

Kathy, I have to do my walking separate from the dog walks because Dixie stops so much (not just to do business, but to look at bugs, to roll in the grass, to intimidate innocent passers-by, to watch golfers, to get pets and praise from her admiring public, etc.) that we never get too far.

message 4128: by [deleted user] (new)

And all of the sniffing and peeing and sniffing, too. (boy dogs!)

message 4129: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay. I finished my book, and walked (a pathetic) 20 minutes. The book was worth it! :)

Jeannette wrote: "Okay. I finished my book, and walked (a pathetic) 20 minutes. The book was worth it! :)"

Yay!

Good Morning. For me the key is being consistent. If I can do even 20 minutes, but every day, I will feel I have accomplished something. Won't make it this morning, will squeeze in 20-30 minutes this afternoon.

Morning Hayes, I'm up late. 20 or 30 minutes a day seems like a very do-able goal for exercise. I love a good brisk walk myself.

If you've got a fever, stay in bed (if possible) and read. Take care of yourself and read a good book.

Gundula,
I have to do the regular running around required to get the kids here and there, but otherwise I think I'm laying low today. I have no energy so I'd probably end up sleeping somewhere on the sidewalk if I went out anyway.

You just cannot take the entire day of for "recovery" if you've got kids. And, you don't want to end up sleeping on the sidewalk. Hope you feel better soon. I'm a bit under the weather as well. The recent heat waves we've been having have given me a painful fungal rash. It's itchy (and in a very inconvenient place). The pills the doctor prescribed make me tired, and the pharmacy was out of the topical cream, so I have to go and pick it up this afternoon (instead of getting yesterday).

message 4137: by [deleted user] (new)

You two take care of yourselves!!

You were sick earlier Christine, so maybe you haven't given yourself enough sleep to fully recover. (I have a picture of you, on the pavement, drooling......)

Gundula, the weather has been cool and dreary here. Fall happened overnight, so it should cool down by you soon.

Go for it Hayes & Lee & Kathy!! I am going out in a little while, too.

message 4138: by [deleted user] (new)

I went through Starbucks this morning after I dropped Benjamin off. I almost never go there anymore because I am trying to save money, but I really wanted that extra treat this morning. When I got to the pay window in the drive-thru the girl told me that the woman in front of me had paid for my coffee. Isn't that the nicest thing??

message 4142: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, first off, what a great way to start your day, with someone doing something so nice for you. Secondly, walking with dog(s) can be a problem sometimes. With my dog, I still manage to get in a decent walk, but today I got my daughter's pug for a week, so I'm sure the dog walks will not be too productive (well maybe for them) or beneficial.

After my daughter and her husband and my darling Izzy baby delivering the dog this morning (like seeing my baby wasn't enough), the mail lady delivered part of an Amazon order. I received the following books: From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books; Word After Word After Word' and Naked Reading: Uncovering What Tweens Need to Become Lifelong Readers. Yesterday, when I had lunch with my daughter and grandbaby, we went to Border's, and I bought my daughter (for her trip) two books by Jeannette Walls, The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses. I bought myself (finally) The Pillars of the Earth. Oh, also in the mail, I received another package. Happy, happy, love those packages! It is two vintage games I ordered from EBay for my son for Christmas. The first one is the old square Aggravation game. We started playing this game at the grandparents' (my husband's parents) years ago, and they had the old square version, so I got it for my son. I'd already bought my daughter one last year. I also got him Ask Zandar. He and my daughter used to play it when they were kids, and he loved, loved it. He still talks about it, so, since I don't know what happened to the one we had, I am giving him this one as a memory present. He will like it, I'm sure, as he is my quirky one.

message 4143: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy Day, Kathy! All that good stuff in the mail AND baby Izzy! :)

What nice presents for Christmas. Funny how we get nostalgic about things we had when we were kids.

My sister sold all of her duplo stuff (Lord knows why, she still had little ones at home!) and I bought some. A few years later my nephew calls to see if I have the duplo tiger he loved as a kid (I didn't). I am keeping all sorts of books and games for my daughter's future children! :)

message 4144: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, smart momma, keeping those toys. I have kept quite a lot, but it seems some of the games went missing. I think my husband threw some toys out that were in the garage, can't prove it, but I think he did. One of my favorite toys I saved was my son's Ghost Busters firehouse, car, and figures. I loved them!

Oh, I am in package heaven today. The UPS guy just delivered the rest of my Amazon order. There are two great kids' books, It's a Book by Lane Smith and Ubiquitous by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Beckie Prange (she illustrated Song of the Water Boatman and Other Pond Poems that I loved). I also received Folk & Fairy Tales, edited by Martin Hallett and Barbara Karasek, 4th edition. It offers different versions of tales and has analytical and critical essays. The section on illustrations looks wonderful.

No, we got stalled with the carpenter at the end of the summer. The new carpenter came last week to take the measurements, so we should have everything under control in a few weeks. In the mean time no mirror, no shelves, no towel racks! But it's certainly better than it was before, so I'm happy.

Yay! You're moving! Congratulations. And I'm seriously envious. Gundula gets cupcakes!!
