Maude | 479 comments Christine, I am shocked at the attitude of these school officials. None of the schools my son, or presently my two grandsons attend would even dream of speaking to a parent like that. In fact, they would assist in solving the problem. If they treated a parent like you were treated, it would be them who might have to look for another job. You might want to address your concerns with the principal and if that doesn't work, the School Board. In my opinion, this is very unusual and truly awful behavior from school officials.

I agree. If they don't resolve this quickly, you need to escalate it. They are just pushing you around because they think they can. Otherwise, home schooled high school has been great!

I think that blog is related to PPK, which is another great recipe resource. :)

Thanks to everyone for listening to me today. I think I've stopped grinding my teeth, and I'm pretty sure that I'm done pacing for the day. I'm going to grab a mug of tea, my dog, and my book.

Jeannette, I forgot to comment on your daughter's license. Here's my comment....AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Have a great day on Wednesday everyone. We are going to the Iowa State Fair and I hope to eat something on-a-stick this year! Last year they had chocolate covered bacon on-a-stick (which I did not eat!). I know I'll be eating cotton candy, so that counts! :)

message 3910: by [deleted user] (new)

They have (which sounds so gross to me) fried butter on a stick out here. It's a whole stick of butter! Who could eat that?!

Maybe they'll have cupcakes on a stick. My favorite fair food is the corn on the cob, but there is no actual stick involved.

message 3911: by [deleted user] (new)

Update on my complaining, I got an email late last night from the head coach, and he apologized for his assistant coach and said he will address the issues with her as well as the Athletics Office person who was horrible. He also said that he would order her a new uniform if he couldn't find her one. So there is actually a sane person out there. Thank goodness. I let Emma read his email and she felt better.

message 3912: by [deleted user] (new)

The book chosen for the next book group is called The Great Divorce: A Nineteenth-Century Mother's Extraordinary Fight against Her Husband, the Shakers, and Her Times by Ilyon Woo. I have never heard of this and there is nothing on goodreads that I can find. Does anyone know anything about this book?

message 3913: by [deleted user] (new)

Have a super happy fun day Christine!!

The fried butter is not on-a-stick. It is actually little "balls" of butter, about the size of a donut hole. I'll take pictures of the weirdest food on-a-stick and report back tomorrow on it! :D

That's good news and I'm glad that the coach is going to address the issue. Tell Emma though to keep her head up, the assistant coach might not take kindly to being reprimanded by the coach. But, at least there seems to be a sane person at the school.

Jeannette, don't eat anything too strange, even if it's fried and on a stick (who would eat deep fried butter or deep fired bacon, yuck). I'm usually a rather adventurous eater, but I would not try those.

The only thing that I found was that it's history (non-fiction), but no reviews. I ordered it from Amazon because they didn't have it at my B&N. I wonder how the girl who chose it found out about it. I'll have to call her.

So glad to see that the coach is being reasonable (and apologetic). I would say that the coach will make sure that Emma doesn't have any more problems. The fact that he emailed instead of calling suggests that he was a bit afraid of a confrontation, which is right where you want him. Now he knows you won't be pushed around. Grrrrrrrrrr! (LOL!)

Fried butter on a stick? I love me butter but not sure about taking it that far. Jeannette, maybe you can find something a little less injurious to your health.

Good morning everyone! I didn't find any really disgusting things to eat at the Fair this year. A whole stick of butter is rather disturbing! Who would even want to eat that? We did have a funnel cake (pretty greasy, but it's only once a year), an ice cream cone and some cotton candy. All of it is pretty standard for a visit to the Fair. We had a beautiful day, saw the 3,000 pound bull, and walked until we couldn't take another step! :) I'll post a few pictures later today.

Have a lovely Thursday!

I like funnel cakes, but they are really greasy. They used to make them at the Waterloo Farmers' Market, yummy, but really bad for my skin.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Where is everyone? It rather freaks me out that I would be the first person on here this morning. I am getting ready to go to my daughter's and see my wonderful granddaughters. I'm bringing the 9-yr-old home with me for the weekend. We're going to stop on the way home and turn in her Border's summer reading list for a free book. Tonight we will go out to eat with my mother-in-law, Journie's adopted great-grandmother. Tomorrow there's a multi-cultural festival, and I want to see the new Nanny McFee movie (I hope she does, too). Next weekend is the Izzy's numero uno birthday bash. So, August is going out with a bang two weekends in a row. Woowee! I hope everyone else here has a great weekend, too!

message 3924: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning, Kathy! You are up early and the usual crowd doesn't seem to be checking in. Sorry for abandoning you! I am finishing up some work for my daughter's first college application. We are meeting with a professor in about an hour. They start early in the application process these days.

It sounds like you have a super-fun-filled weekend ahead of you! Next weekend, too! Let us know if you like the movie. I am thinking of going, too. Post pictures of the birthday bash next week, too! Have fun!

Have a wonderful Friday everyone! :)

message 3925: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, Kathy! It freaks me out when I can't check in as well, haha! We've been out all morning at appointments, practices, yada yada. Emma has sports pictures in an hour so I'm headed over there soon. They are just wearing their jackets for photos since a few don't have uniforms (the coach ordered some, bless him!).

Have fun with your granddaughters! And Jeannette, I hope the meeting goes well with her professor!

I started The Great Divorce. It's been a long time since I read non-fiction history (usually I'm all historical fiction), and it's really interesting so far.

I'm off for a bit! Have a great afternoon!

Christine, it sounds as though Emma is not the only athlete with uniform troubles (glad that the coach has ordered some). Have you had any more problems with the assistant coach, or is that all resolved now? Have a good day, everyone. I have a driving lesson in about two hours. And, next Thursday, I have the second part of my road exam (for a G license, I have a G2 license at the moment). Well, I never thought I would even get this far, I always thought that driving and I are an impossible mix. The second part is highway driving, but they also often retest parallel parking (yuck). Also, I'm doing it at a different location than my usual one (they had no spaces and the approach is a real pain). If I don't pass (and, I'm a bit pessimistic, it took my four times to pass the G2 road test), I will try with the other location again.

message 3927: by [deleted user] (new)

Good luck, Gundula! I'm not sure what all the G's stand for, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! :)

message 3928: by [deleted user] (new)

Glad things are working out for Emma! Yay!

Lea really liked the professor. She was enthusiastic and fun to talk to. I may be selfish, but it will be nice to have her at the University here in town. And, the programs all sound good so far.

I got my haircut today, too. It's nice and spiky again! :D

message 3929: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Jeannette wrote: "Good luck, Gundula! I'm not sure what all the G's stand for, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! :)"

They have a graduated license in Ontario, which is not a bad idea. The G1 is a written test (a learner's permit, so that you can take lessons). After the first road test, you have a G2 license; the G2 road test tests city driving, but not highway driving. The G license is the final general driving license and the road test for the G license tests highway driving, and they often also retest some maneuvers like three point turns and parallel parking (actually, while I hate parallel parking, I find having to back into a parking space even worse, so we'll see)

message 3930: by [deleted user] (new)

A graduated license sounds like a very good idea to me. Good luck!

Good morning everyone! It's time to go out and weed in the yard, before it heats up. We're still working on the bed where the willow tree used to be.

Kathy -- I'm looking forward to hearing about your weekend with the grandkids. You always have such nice stories to share.
Christine -- no school today!
Gundula -- I'll keep sending positive thoughts your way.
Lee -- I am having too much fun collecting recipes.
Hayes -- how's the kitchen??

Everyone -- have a wonderful end-of-summer weekend! :)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments It's raining some here, but I'm not complaining, as we need rain desperately. I do hope it clears up for the multi-cultural festival that's held outdoors. For me, it could rain all day since my granddaughter and I are getting ready to read in a few minutes. She said she loves to read with me and wants to read for a long time. Ah, heaven! She even made me eat a chocolate longjohn this morning. The sacrifices we grandmothers make. LOL! Later today we will go see The Return of Nanny McPhee and plan on renting The Whimpy Kid DVD (I think it's out now).

Gundula, I didn't realize you didn't have your driver's license. Good for you going through the work to get it now. My mother didn't drive, which I thought was worse for her than us. It's no wonder that my dad made sure we each got a car when we were old enough to drive. I imagine he was quite tired of running us everywhere and running his real estate business, too. It did help that my older sisters were 8 and 10 years older than I, so they helped out, too.

Jeannette, it is nice to have your daughter close. Enjoy! And, thanks for posting before me today. I don't know that I could have handled two days in a row being first.

I'm going to chime in with a good morning, although nothing exciting is happening here today. I tried to read last night, but fell asleep. What is everyone else up to?

message 3937: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! We rescued a blind dog last night! We watched a movie, so we took our dog out at 9:30 for his walk. I had noticed a car in the side street, and when we got outside there was a second car at the corner, and the driver was trying to coax a dog to him. I heard him say "I think it's blind" and knew the dog was this really old poodle that lived around the corner. It had slipped out somehow and this nice lady had seen it in the road and called her husband to come help her catch it. It is not easy to catch a small, frightened and blind dog. My husband made a noose out of our leash and slipped it over her head. I jogged around the corner, and the owner didn't believe me at first, until my husband showed up with the dog on the lead. How nice that these strangers took the time to rescue a little dog in the road!

So, that's my interesting weekend story. Otherwise, I am trying to convince myself that I am not covered with itchy mosquito bites! *youch*

Have a great day everyone! :)

The real heroes are the lady with the baby in her car, and her husband who drove over to help save the little dog. I'm pretty sure he had been watching tv and sipping a beer when she called him. I'm just happy to have stumbled upon these people. I don't even know who they are.

I always seem to be finding loose dogs! lol One day I opened the door form the house to the garage and there was this large husky in my garage! He was not neutered and had run a couple miles away from home. Luckily he was friendly and had a tag on his collar. The owner came and got him.

Earlier this year we got "herded" by a loose border collie and had to call animal control to pick her up after we got her to our house -- no collar, but she had a chip. It wasn't safe to just leave her out loose at night. She was so funny! She was determined to herd my dog. She even ran a big loop to sneak up behind us! She listened to commands really well, too. :)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Kudos to you Jeannette for being such a good friend to the dog world. A wonderful deed indeed! My sister-in-law is like a dog whisperer and seems to help a lot with lost/loose dogs. It's funny. I always laugh and say that someday I'm going to pick out a dog because it seems that most of my dogs have found me or found their way to me. One of the sweetest was a dog that came into the neighborhood and was so scared at first of people that he wouldn't come to me. It was obvious that he had been ill treated. I finally got him to come to me, and, of course, I had to keep him then. We called him Fella because I had started out saying "Hey there fella."

Good Monday morning to everyone!! WooHoo, it's Monday! Booyah Monday! (Does that sound real enough? Do you all think that I really am excited that it's Monday? I'm practicing for Wednesday and the first day of school.)

Why is it that coffee pots and other appliances usually either decide to stop working on Friday afternoon or on Monday morning? Hope you get your coffee, Christine. I have my last driving lesson before my road test today and then the Test on Thursday morning. Actually, I'm more confused than ever about parallel parking. One of my uncles called from Germany yesterday and tried to explain the procedure to me, but in Germany, the procedure seems to be a bit different, so now I think I'm really up the proverbial creek without a paddle. Oh well, not the end of the world.

message 3947: by [deleted user] (new)

Happy Monday everybody! You all started out with such great stories! :)

Fella is a great name for a dog, Kathy. I hope he has/had a long and happy life at your house.

Christine, that is too *deleted* funny and sad at the same time. I am glad that I am a tea drinker, because the stove and the microwave have yet to die on the same day (knock on wood). Store up those booyahs for Wednesday morning!

Gundula, how can anyone explain parallel parking over the phone? You need to save up and buy one of those new cars that park themselves. I think Mercedes is selling them. Good luck with the final lesson and the road test!!

I let my daughter go to the food coop by herself yesterday. She came back alive and got most of the groceries right! She'll be driving to a party this weekend. *yikes*

Have a lovely day everyone! :)

message 3948: by Manybooks (new)

Manybooks Not only did he confuse me, but I guess in Germany, you are allowed to actually touch the other cars once while parallel parking, wow. I have heard of those cars that park themselves, but I think they cost almost as much as a house (or, at least a cottage). And, anyway, I'm generally not good at following verbal instructions, esp. over the phone. Jeannette, does your daughter have her license or just a learner's permit? I'm asking, because with Ontario's graduate license system, a person with a learner's permit (a G1) is only allowed to drive if there is an adult with a valid G license in the car with him/her and is only allowed on the 400 highway system with a qualified instructor (not a bad idea, I think, I think it really has saved lives).

message 3949: by [deleted user] (new)

She drove with a learner's permit for the last year (you can get a learner's permit at 14 in Iowa). Right now she has a restricted license. She is allowed to drive solo, but may not drive between the hours of 12:30am and 5am. In one year, this restriction comes off, and then she may drive just like any adult. I don't want to send her out on the highway alone just yet. She still needs more experience. She seems to be okay around town. She is a very cautious driver.

In Ontario, you have to pass your G2 road test before you can drive solo, I think it's a pretty good system, and we also have nighttime restrictions (and teenage new drivers cannot have too many passengers). I'm glad your daughter is a cautious driver.
