3 weeks did go fast, Jeannette. Happy homecoming to your daughter! I know you will be glad to have her home again.

Thanks, Kathy! And Jeannette, I must have missed the initial comment...your daughter is coming home? Wow! I bet you are excited!

Tonight is the dance! Tomorrow we meet the teacher, get a class presentation and then take her home. She starts driver's ed on Monday. Where did 1/3 of my life go so fast?

Yes, I am very happy that she is coming home from camp! I missed the kid hugs. :)

Fiona, I must admit that my laptop keyboard is jammed full of crumbs. Some of the keys are also quite sticky.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, they do grow up quickly, don't they? I remember my two starting to drive, such a big step toward independence. Sometimes I shake my head and wonder how my children could possibly be 23 and 26. The great thing is that there is so much to enjoy with every phase in their lives.

Fiona, thanks for the tip about the paintbrush, I'll give that a go. I can't seem to stop eating while on the computer.

Jeannette, I can't believe your daughter is coming home already! That went by fast but I bet you missed her like crazy. I guess it's a taste of things to come eh?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's not always "nice" to their computers. In a previous post when you talked about feeding your laptop (I though that was cute), I remembered a commercial from years ago where a father tried to explain videotape machines to his little child by saying that the video machine "eats" video tapes. So, the child thought he would vary the machine's diet by feeding it oatmeal. Needless to say, that the family had to get a new VCR (I don't usually like most commercials, but this one was sweet).

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments So, I just found out about the cutest thing. In talking to my daughter about our little Izzy's upcoming 1st birthday, my daughter mentioned the term "smash cake." You with little ones probably know what that is. It's the little cake for the wee one that sits on top of the big cake, the little cake being the one that the baby can "smash." How adorable is that! My daughter lives near a great little bakery that does this combo. I think we are going with a bee smash cake on top of a garden (flowers) on the main cake. We've started calling my granddaughter Izzy B, as her last name starts with a "B." Yes, I am getting very excited about my granddaughter's 1st birthday. It's Aug. 27th.

Wow, I've never head of a smash cake but it sounds like fun. I hope the little cake on top gets removed before being smashed!

message 3664: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'd never heard of or seen smash cakes either. What a great idea!

Lee wrote: "Wow, I've never head of a smash cake but it sounds like fun. I hope the little cake on top gets removed before being smashed!"

It can be easily separated, and you give it to them and let them do whatever they want. It's adorable. Also it's quite funny when you see the little ones who don't want to mess it up and everyone is trying to get them to smash it. I'll have to load a picture of Emma with her smash cake.

ETA: I added one to my profile page.

message 3666: by [deleted user] (new)

Cute!!!!!

We just let Lea mash up a piece of cake. We had to show her how to do it -- foreign concept to her. :) Now I have to scan in some baby pics, too.

message 3667: by [deleted user] (new)

The problem is when they get a little older and smashing cake is no longer appropriate! "But mo-om! You told me last year I could smash the cake, why do I have to eat it this year?" ;-)

Hayes wrote: "The problem is when they get a little older and smashing cake is no longer appropriate! "But mo-om! You told me last year I could smash the cake, why do I have to eat it this year?" ;-)"

Wait...is this why everyone gets annoyed when I smash desserts at parties? And this is wrong?

message 3669: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning you two! :)

The girl is home, her room is a jumble of clothes and stuff! We stayed up reading together, separately. It was a pleasant thing to do.

The in-laws are on the phone for the weekly call. Then it's French toast for brunch. *yum*

Enjoy the day everyone!

Not necessarily... ;-)

Jeannette: Glad your family is back together.

Kathy: you rested up yet from your grandmothering duties... ready for the big party on the 27th? Pictures of course!!

Have a great day!

Yay! She's home! Emma and I read like that sometimes, and it's wonderful. Enjoy your day!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Christine, I loved the smash cake pic you posted. And, let me just add that you have such adorable, cute kids! Also, I would think that the woman who can handle the postman/woman and the UPS person so deftly, would be allowed to smash any cake she wanted. LOL!

Hayes, I think I've finally recovered. I ordered party decorations online yesterday (my daughter thinks I'm going a bit overboard, don't know why). It will be a bee theme, as we often call the baby Izzy B. The smash cake is going to be a bee, too. So much fun ahead. Hey, is all of your renovation done? Pictures?

Jeannette, you had a perfect homecoming, reading together. On the last Harry Potter book, my son (who was grown then) and I read it separately in different parts of the house, but at the same time. It was great! French toast? I want some.

Lisa, I am going to try and read a lot this afternoon on TKAM. I posted something on the thread this morning. I am excited all over again about this reread.

message 3673: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Christine, That smash cake photo is adorable; all your photos are.

Kathy, Yay your TKAM reread. It will be interesting, I think. Every time I reread it, I get something else from it.

message 3674: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Kathy and Lisa (and you other sweet ladies with your comments...and yes, that's me but I can't figure out why my hair looked so black. It's an old picture though).

Now I want to read TKAM again. It's been forever for me since I read it.

It's half done... we're stalled on the carpenter, which will have to wait for september. Pictures are on my profile page.

And it's not possible to go overboard for the birthday party. That's what grandmothers are for!! I regret that my son's grandmother, as wonderful as she is in a lot of ways, is just not good with the parties and presents and recurrences, no photos, no excitement, no magic... ah well.

My mother is pretty much an anti-grandma. She loves my kids, but she gets annoyed really quickly and just doesn't like to do the grandma things. I think it's cool when I see the super grandmas, like Kathy.

I got the movie Twilight to watch with my daughter while dad's away next week. He is such a movie geek that he insisted on watching it tonight with us. He is taking a pass on New Moon! lol Boy, Twilight was stunning.

My grandmother was pretty distant too, so I was hoping for a more "fun" grandmother for my son (although they have a great relationship, and do all sorts of things together, but nothing "grandmothery").

My Step-mother, when she was alive, and my step-father both did/do great grandparenty things, but they were/are so far away.

Jeannette: I can't believe you all watched Twilight together... just the idea makes me cringe. Your poor husband!

message 3683: by [deleted user] (new)

I pretty much grew up without grandparents. The only one I remember, was my dad's mother, and she frightened me. She was probably a lot nicer than I remember; I just can't remember her ever approving of us completely.

I'm going to read to my grandkids and stuff them full of cookies! (My daughter just said "All right!".)

Hayes wrote: "Jeannette: I can't believe you all watched Twilight together... just the idea makes me cringe. Your poor husband! ..."

It's his fault; he insisted! He said, "You're going to watch this without me?" So, we watched it. I hope he learned a lesson! lol

Aw, Christine, you are so sweet. I think because I didn't have any grandparents growing up (they were all already deceased), I wanted to make sure that my kids enjoyed a close grandparents relationship and that my grandkids will, too. I have to admit that I love the spoiling them part. In fact, I made up a new saying, "Parents toil, grandparents spoil." LOL!

Hayes, I'm going to your profile imediately after this posting and look at your pics. Jeannette, I'm definitely in for the reading to grandkids and stuffing them with cookies. Oh, it's neat that you and your daughter are enjoying the Twilight films, and that you husband braved out the first one. I loved the book series, but I need to catch up on the films. I've only seen the first one, so I think I'll try to make it an August project to get up to speed on these.

I'm in the process of checking out everyone's photos now. I first clicked mine and found the "author" pictures I'd posted (me and a few of the authors I've met). Now, when I get my computer problems straightened out, I plan of adding some grandkid photos. I may try and see if this old computer I'm using will add them. Maybe? Now, on the check more pictures.

I'm going to add a baby birthday photo like Christine has. As soon as I finish my homework for Lee, and the choir, and clean the house.... :)

Aside from emails, I mostly use my iPhone for emails and to check my Goodreads groups. There's less build up when I get home, which is very helpful.
