I agree, the whole series is lovely, and the Emily of New Moon series is just as lovely.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments OK, I confess that the only Dickens I've read is A Christmas Carol. I have A Tale of Two Cities that is on my list of classics I really do want to read, but, alas, it still sits on the shelf unread. I finally read Anne of Green Gables last year. The guilt was overwhelming, so I made sure I got that one crossed off. I bought War and Peace, and then I decided that life was too short to read this tome just because I thought I should. It's amazing to me that even though I majored in English in college, there are so many, many classics I haven't read. But, authors keep writing all these great contemporary books. So, I think I qualify for the island and the cupcakes.

message 3607: by [deleted user] (new)

Come on down, Kathy! I read Christmas Carol once a year. My husband started Les Miserables a few years ago and gave up about 2/3 of the way in. I read the ending! :)

(I have read Moby Dick, and no one forced me!)

I mooched a copy a little while ago... it's slowly coming up on TBR. Can't wait!

(And whaddya mean you don't think Jane Eyre is such a hot book! *hand to chest... swoons*)

Morning everyone. Another cool and lovely day here. Hope you all have a good one!

message 3610: by [deleted user] (new)

lol Hayes! I got into a Jane Eyre vs. Wuthering Heights debate a few weeks ago. I obviously prefer WH, and have re-read it more times than JE. I should try JE again, because it is a good book. Have you read The Eyre Affair?

You need to bump Anne up in your queue. It is an easy read and a wonderful story. Your son might enjoy it, too. Is he is big reader?

Enjoy the cool day. It is cool this morning in Iowa, too, but it will be warming up. Two more days and we pick up our camper! :)

Have a good day everyone! Cupcake Island, here we come! :)

I have, and the next two as well (Lost in a Good Book, The Well of Lost Plots) and I think I will stop there. Really liked the first and the next two kind of dragged. Haven't read his new series, have you? (Shades of Grey, or whatever it's called.)

I really enjoyed The Eyre Affair, but that was it for me, too. I tried Shades of Grey, but couldn't get into it.

I thought The Eyre Affair was pretty clever, and it helped that I knew the story, too.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I loved the fifth Thursday Next book. Book 3 was my least favorite. I did like Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron though, so maybe I'm just a bigger fan of Jasper Fforde..

message 3614: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning comfies,
I just got my internet back this morning. I have a to-do list to complete today, but I'd rather hang out online.

I got a goodreads contest win in the mail late yesterday, and it looks like it'll be a comfort read. It's call The Tower, The Zoo, and The Tortoise: A Novel, and they sent me 4 pages of facts about the Tower of London in the envelope. Pretty cool!

I think you are a bigger fan, Lisa! :) Plus, I just seem to be having a hard time concentrating this summer. Shades of Grey took too much effort right up front for me. I did put it in my "try again later" queue.

Conrats, Christine! I never win these giveaways. The best thing that happened to me last year is that I volunteered to review an ARC, and really enjoyed the book. I hope the Tower book is a good one, too!

I wondered where you were today. I thought maybe you were paddling off to Cupcake Island already....

message 3617: by [deleted user] (new)

I used to review ARCs through HarperCollins, but they cut the program a while ago. I found so many new authors that way, it was awesome. This one looks like it will be good. I just have to finish The Red Thread The Red Thread by Ann Hood first...hopefully today.

message 3618: by [deleted user] (new)

I reviewed Love Engineered. The author is on goodreads. It's her first novel and I enjoyed it very much. I even reviewed it on amazon.com, another first for me.

You and Lee are going to have me blogging pretty soon! :)

message 3619: by [deleted user] (new)

Book blogging is just a fun way to keep a book journal for me. I don't think that anyone looks at it except for me, but that's okay. (Well, Anita Diamant left a comment once about something I said about her book...that was cool) I never found a way to do a book journal that I kept up with until I did this.

So, this is just a hobby? Nobody sends you books or anything? I think you have a great blog! It would be even better if you got rid of the Spartan "logo" but I can't expect perfection! :P

message 3621: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey! Okay, I'm ignoring that.

For me it's only a hobby. Some people I know have connections with authors and publishers, but not me. I just write about what I choose to read, nobody gives me stuff to review.

It's one of the reasons I have not bought an e-reader yet. I have a tendency to be very bad with and for technical and electronic gadgets. I've wrecked two cell phone by accidentally stepping on them, and once I tripped while going down the stairs and, of course, dropped the laptop I was carrying; it did not take very kindly to this.

I just don't try to carry too much going up and down stairs, it's easy to trip especially if you're not paying attention. I also don't think that I could ever like reading an e-reader, I love holding a book, turning the pages etc.

It was one "did not finish", one disappointing but okay, and one crappy. Not a good stretch for me.

It sounds interesting. Another winner! :)

message 3638: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) There are some good photos and so far it's very interesting. Each chapter is its own little essay. Art, culture, history, geography, weather, etc. etc. are touched on. I'm not very far into it, but I'm really enjoying it. I live a 5 minute drive from the San Francisco side of the bridge and it's always been a part of my life, so the book is particularly interesting.

message 3639: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning!

Lisa, I have a huge fear of bridges, but I do remember just pure excitement when we used to cross the Golden Gate. It's such a gorgeous bridge. (Now, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is another story...that scary thing was an instant heart attack every time)

I started my First Reads last night, and I like it so much already. I need a good one. :)

Appointments today mean waiting rooms so maybe I'll read a little. Off to hunt coffee....

message 3640: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Good morning everyone! I sure did miss you all yesterday, Internet down. It was a good day to be down, though, as I slept so much. I didn't get up until almost 11 and then took a nap from 5 to 6:30 yesterday afternoon. I hate to admit that a 9-yr-old and two short road trips did me in, but it seems the evidence speaks for itself. Gee!

I have an early hair appointment today, so I'm off in a few minutes. The gray has to be tended to, or rather covered. I may also get a facial.

Christine, what is your other blog link? Oh, I have a fear of walking across bridges, can't do it. I tried once when I was in high school, and I ended up having to wait for a ride across.

message 3641: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning everyone! We are having a nice, crashing thunderstorm right now! Really weird weather this summer.

I'm having lunch with a friend and then running errands. I really want to get back to my book, too.

The kid comes home tomorrow. Three weeks went by in a hurry!

Have a great day! Keep an eye on your book Christine. :)

message 3642: by [deleted user] (new)

Bridges were a fear that I gained over time. So let's see...now it's bridges, flying over water, spiders, germ warfare, skydecks, elevators, running out of paper towels, earthquakes, being trampled, and flesh eating bacteria.

blog link: http://reflectionsofaplumfan.blogspot...

I wish I hadn't named it that, but it's too much of a pain to change it now.

message 3643: by [deleted user] (new)

My fears: spiders; drowning; tight, dark places.

I got over my fears about flying, because we fly every year at least once. I think I am finally over my fear of terrorists attacks, even though helicopters overhead still make me nervous.

Can't you rename the url to dixie's mom's blog? I like that title much better. :)

message 3644: by Lisa (last edited Jul 30, 2010 07:15AM) (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Earthquakes. Heights when I'm near the edge of a cliff (I'm okay in buildings and on roller coasters, etc.) Bees or anything that stings. Fires. (I"m not wild about spider or many other things either.)

Which means I'm not always wild about driving or walking across the GG Bridge because of my fear of earthquakes. But, I know I'm not safe in my apartment or most other places I am either, if there is a large quake.

message 3645: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I am also scared of crossing big bridges but it is the girders that make me more nervous than the bridge. I didn't know I had this phobia until I went to SF many, many years ago and had a panic attack crossing the bridge. I had to come back the same way because I didn't know what else to do but - thankfully - the fog rolled in and I couldn't see the girders! I have also never been able to lie on my back and look at the sky.
