Maude | 479 comments I didn't think of Old Yeller - I was thinking that they were doing it deliberately like making them get hit by a car or something. I understand it now and it is why I never went to any of those sad movies. All someone has to do is tell me an animal dies. I am still not over Bambi's mother.

message 3502: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I'm not over Bambi's mother yet either. Guess I never will be.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) Wonder how many of us there are who were traumatized by the death of Bambi's mother. Would it have been done the same way today? I bought Grimm's Fairy Tales to read to my son when he was small. It went straight to the shelf. Until then, I hadn't realized how much violence we Boomers were exposed to when we were growing up.

I didn't read any of those fairy tales to my daughter, either. She never liked seeing "people in peril" in movies, either (at 16, she still doesn't). She was terrified by the ending of Disney's Little Mermaid! (poor thing!)

Maude wrote: "Christine, My grandkids are 11 and 15 but I have never seen animals killed anytime I took them to the movies. What movies do this? It sounds awful and I agree with you totally - who would do that?"

Well, for one, Ramona and Beezus. The cat died (old age), and it was not important to the story line at all...it just made poor Ramona cry, and it depressed my son.

message 3507: by [deleted user] (new)

Poor Benjamin. Gets all excited about going to a movie and then they do that to him! I hope he cheers up soon.

message 3508: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I never heard of those but I do not think that people who make these movies for children should deliberately upset children for no reason. I was addicted to Mighty Joe Young when I was a kid - my mother took me to see it every time it was rereleased even tho' I got upset when he was mistreated.

message 3509: by [deleted user] (new)

Overall he really enjoyed the movie, he just keeps mentioning the cat so I know it hit him hard. Of course, he also mentions breaking a raw egg on his head for laughs....he better not even think about it.

He's fine, just a sensitive soul. Maybe I should break a raw egg on my head to distract him.

Be sure to post it to Youtube! lol Was that a stunt from the movie?

message 3512: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning everyone! It's visit day today! :)

We got the tree down and are hoping to see the city trucks someday soon.

I promised the child chocolate pudding for today -- the kind you actually cook on the stove. I will make enough for me, too!

Have a great day! Watch out for raw eggs!

message 3513: by [deleted user] (new)

Have fun at visit day! Yes, she breaks a raw egg on her head (thinking it's hard boiled)...you can see this stunt in any preview for the movie, however it did not seem to take away from the kids' reaction in the theater. They all laughed so hard that I thought I'd be surrounded by tons of kids with hiccups.

message 3514: by [deleted user] (new)

Jeannette,
Send me some of that pudding! Yum! And when you see your daughter, break a raw egg on your head...she'll love it!

I remember once when my two oldest nieces were over from Germany (I think they were quite young, about six or seven, they are about ten now), my mother got Black Beauty on DVD. I told her that I found the book quite traumatic when I read it, and that the movie might be a bit much for the girls, but she thought, "a horse movie, for the whole family, how nice." Well, I was right, both girls were quite upset and crying over the treatment Black Beauty had to endure, they were certainly not ready for that kind of realism.

message 3516: by Maude (new)

Maude | 479 comments I have never seen or read Black Beauty but I have heard it is very traumatic and even tho' I am an adult I don't want to see/read it for that very reason. I get very upset over animal abuse. (People, too, of course!)

Both the movie and the book are good, the book is even better, But, the book is traumatic and not for the faint of heart. One thing about the book, it actually had a lot of influence on the living and working conditions of horses, especially British cart horses, so for that reason alone, I think it's an important book. But, it is definitely not for everyone.

message 3519: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Well, I'm way behind, and it will be a couple of days before I get caught up. My 9-yr-old granddaughter has been here since Friday night (my daughter, her husband, and baby granddaughter were here Friday night and Saturday day), so we have busy, busy. I only have a minute or two now. She will be going back home Tuesday. We went to see Ramona and Beezus today and really enjoyed it. I do agree with you, Christine, that I don't know what the point of the poor cat dying was. Other than that we liked it. Talk to you all, hopefully, some more tomorrow.

message 3520: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy,
Do you have the impulsive need to break an egg on your head? Haha! The girl who played Ramona was adorable.

Jeannette,
How was your visit today?

Everyone else, hope you all had great Sundays! I did my weeding. I am ouchie.

message 3521: by [deleted user] (new)

Gak! My daughter and her bff decided to be so bold as to "invite" guys to "go with them" to the dance next Friday. Well, the bff's attempt ended badly, but my daughter asked this nice kid who she has "liked' for a couple of years now! So, she has a "date" for the dance. We saw him today, too, and he looked pretty cheerful. He's a nice kid, a bit goofy. I don't think my daughter would have asked him, but for the other girl's encouragement. We already told her that the invite to the dance was fine, but really dating is something we need to discuss. See what happens when they are out of sight for a few weeks!

Nothing else exciting -- no broken eggs. :) I did not do any yard work today! I am sick of that tree!!!

message 3522: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 26, 2010 05:26AM) (new)

Oh my! So what is the bff going to do now? I she looking for another date?
Dating....ugh....I'm not ready for that with Emma (and that, my friends, is why she is locked in the closet as we speak).

No eggs? Chicken, that's what you are!

message 3523: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey, Christine, you lay the egg and I'll break it! :P

bff is trying to figure out what happened. They didn't need a date, and we weren't expecting all of this. We'll see what happens. I may have to bring her over to keep Emma company. My closets don't lock!

message 3524: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine don't lock either. I sit outside the door with rubber bands, ready to shoot!

message 3525: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, I am off to drag two very grumpy children to the dentist. Yipee Skippy, good times at my house today.

Christine wrote: "Well, I am off to drag two very grumpy children to the dentist. Yipee Skippy, good times at my house today."

Yippe skippy is right! Maybe they'd rather stay in their closet?

I'm going outside to -- you guessed it -- work on the tree debris. (rhyming so early in the day!)

Have a great day, everybody! :)

LOL, Christine! That little girl was adorable. Of course, you just knew that the egg was going to be a raw one that she cracked on her head. Poor Ramona.

Don't work too hard on tree debris,
Save energy to chat with me.
And in the sun don't overcook,
You need the strength to hold your book.

I love the poem! :)

Two hours in the heat
Leaves me sweaty and feeling nasty.
Leftover pizza in the oven I'll heat;
It sure is lookin' tasty!

message 3530: by [deleted user] (new)

Would you eat it in a box?
Would you eat it with a fox?

message 3531: by [deleted user] (new)

NO! I will not share my food!
That put's me in a BAD, BAD, MOOD!

You should stop rhyming things with me,
We don't want to annoy our Lee.

Yes, oh yes my name is Lee,
Am I always so grumpy?
In my books it's always time
for a fun and funny rhyme!

message 3534: by [deleted user] (new)

I should have known our beloved Lee,
Would support our creativity.
But further rhymes are on hold for me,
Since Jeannette's pizza made me hungry.

The pizza was just great,
Really worth the wait!
You my friends, are really fine
With your rhyming, so divine!

But now, you know
To Toronto we must go!
Lee is oh so very sweet
and she will give us all a treat!! :)

It will make my day!

On a less rhyming note:

I sit with my back to the window and I just saw a hummingbird, looking in the window, reflected in my computer screen! He was hovering for about 60 seconds, or so. What a neat experience! :)

message 3540: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi everyone! Love your poems, thanks for cheering me up today.

We had the last big day of the workmen, who still haven't found the water mains. (The previous owners built over it somewhere, if we only knew where!) We'll probably have to tear out the entire kitchen and the other bathroom to find it, which we aren't going to do; we are giving up. So we spent the entire afternoon cleaning white dust off of everything, again!

message 3541: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi Hayes!

Does that mean no water in your lovely new bathroom? I hope that's not the case!!

Let us know and Christine is sure to come up with a bathroom rhyme for you! :)

message 3542: by [deleted user] (new)

No, no.... we've got water. What we don't have is the mains valve in the apartment, so when the plumber comes (or if we have an emergency, god forbid!) we have to turn the water off for both of the apartment buildings. They have been searching for it for ever... we fear that when the previous owners did the work in the kitchen that they buried it underneath the kitchen floor.

message 3543: by [deleted user] (new)

That would be genius! Most likely the case, too. :(

Sleep well!

message 3544: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my, Hayes! I don't even know what to say. It amazes me what idiot things people do when they build.

message 3545: by [deleted user] (new)

I am ashamed of myself. I just realized how much time I've wasted today on my computer (reading blogs, playing Mildjolt, poking around goodreads, writing poetry--haha!). I am going to use the excuse that my muscles hurt after my weekend projects, but I still can't believe it's so late!

message 3546: by [deleted user] (new)

You haven't been wasting time... you've been socializing! That's good for the soul.

Night all... I'm going to go start my book (Julie and Julia).

message 3548: by [deleted user] (new)

I cleaned out my kitchen cabinets...I feel better now. ;)

message 3549: by [deleted user] (new)

I did the dishes and I spent two hours on tree duty. Does that absolve me for today? For the week? (oh, wait, it's only Monday.....)

message 3550: by [deleted user] (new)

Tree duty is enough by itself. Treat yourself to a book!
