I think the GoodReads team is really excellent and I know they work hard. I hope they get more feedback about this from members so this will be fixed.

Good afternoon comfies! I had to drive my mother-in-law back to Chicago today so my morning was spent in traffic...glad to get home. I still haven't caught up on messages here, I need to do that. I'm very curious to figure out what is super clunky, haha!

message 3403: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, it's not me or Kathy, this time! :P

Welcome back to a normal life.

message 3404: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm glad that you are not super clunky, Jeannette. :)

Some of the choir kinds think I am awesome! :) (That makes me feel good, too.)

I just got the nicest card with cupcake stickers from Miss Jeannette. This gave me such a lift! You're awesome, Jeannette.

I want some Kaiserschmarren as well, now. I love German pancakes, but I generally don't try to make them, as making them for one person is not good for the waistline (and my boyfriend does not like them, he likes the American buttermilk pancakes). My mother used to make unsweetened pancakes with wild mushroom ragout, that was good as well.

I told you that I would send you some cupcakes! :) Those won't impact your waistline, unfortunately.

Gundula -- we make 1-1/2 recipes most Sundays. I try to limit myself to two! My daughter & my husband eat 3, maybe 3-1/2. They are skillet-sized, of course.

Other days we make french toast using challah bread -- also yummy!

message 3410: by [deleted user] (new)

Wait....I wasn't supposed to eat them? The flavor was a bit odd, but there was no strawberry goop (yay!).

Challah bread also makes wonderful bread pudding. And, when I make French toast, I also use challah bread, but I bake it in the oven, instead of frying it up.

message 3413: by [deleted user] (new)

Yum, bread pudding! Do you use raisins? We also make Griessauflauf, which is a cream of wheat souffle' really, just heartier. But, that's a winter dish.

message 3414: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Whoa! Way too many posts to catch up on! So, I will simpley say that there is some good food talk going on here, and I would like to know more about this challah bread. I am glad to read that it wasn't just me having trouble with the lists on Listopia. I need to go back and see if I can figure out how to add a title now, and I need to visit the feedback group and add my complaint.

It stormed here a little while ago. Maybe, just maybe it will bring some relief to the heat battered area. Or, it might just make things even more humid (if possible). I have a good night planned, finishing Linger and watching Rizzoli and Isles on TV. Got word back on my computer, and it was the motherboard again. Now I have to decide if I want to replace the computer or just bear with this old one I'm using.

I made a pretty good bread pudding two days ago with chocolate chip and bananas.

Double yum! I hate turning the oven on in July, so I start these types of desserts in the fall. I am assuming this is a vegan recipe? What are the secret ingredients, Lee?

message 3417: by [deleted user] (new)

Good morning! My stupid body is apparently still thinking it has to get up at 5:30. Anyway, I'm trying to choose my next book. If anyone is awake, I am open to suggestions.

Good morning! Temperature is slowly returning to normal summer swelter, as opposed to abnormal infernal torture. A relief.

I just finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie which I just adored!

Have a great day everyone.

Haha! Excellent description! I should step outside to see if it fits for me.

message 3420: by [deleted user] (new)

Good Morning! Sorry I'm late -- slept in again! ;)

No rain, cooled down overnight, another 1/4 of the tree chopped up. Of course, I stood and yacked with the neighbors part of the time, so I need to do penance today. So, I'll be doing some solo chopping later.

Volunteer day at the library for Teen Olympics. Gotta teach those young people how to shoot a rubber band properly! Have a fun day!

message 3421: by [deleted user] (new)

I need to improve my rubber band shooting skills! I would like to add this to my bag of tricks when stalking the mailman for my books.

Can they send you to the "pen" for that? You know, Federal employee and all.....

message 3423: by [deleted user] (new)

I would rule the pen....they would all fear me and my rubber band.

Christine wrote: "I would rule the pen....they would all fear me and my rubber band."

lol I will check out the best methods today and let you know! I don't think you would look good in an orange jumper, do you?

message 3425: by [deleted user] (new)

No...I'd have to get them to change to a nice shade of blue or green.

message 3426: by [deleted user] (new)

Christine wrote: "No...I'd have to get them to change to a nice shade of blue or green."

I think that would be better. I might be able to pull off the orange with my white hair! But, it isn't my favorite color. I am glad they got rid of the horizontal b/w stripes.

message 3427: by [deleted user] (new)

I better go chop some trees now, or I'll be in trouble! :)

message 3428: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Oh my, all this talk of going to prison. Christine, maybe it's not such a good idea for you to add anything else to your arsenal of intimidation for the mail and UPS deliverers. Don't encourage her, Jeannette. Sounds like you will have a fun day (well, after the tree chopping). Christine, have you read Honolulu by Brennert. It's supposed to be good, just like Moloka'i was. I'm going to read it soon, hopefully start it in the next week.

The rain was great late yesterday afternoon, and when I went out later, around 7:30, it had really cooled off. However, I see in the paper this morning that it is calling for steamy once again (does that ever change), so no relief in sight yet, although one day it's only supposed to be 91.

Yes, I did, and I really liked it. You will enjoy it, Kathy.

Yeah Jeannette, quit leading me to a life of crime. You had to go mentioning the rubber band shooting, now look what you've started! I'm out of control.

message 3430: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 20, 2010 10:05AM) (new)

Sure, both of you, blame me for Christine's dark side! I'm just an innocent bystander. (Is there a command for *sparkly/twinkly*?)

1-1/2 hours of moving willow branches out of the neighbor's yard and I know it will annoy my husband that I threw it over the fence into our yard instead of hauling it out front. XP

Jeannette, sorry I've been offline for a day. The ingredients of the bread pudding are soy milk, chocolate chips, bananas, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, maple syrup. I think that's it. The recipe is from Veganomicon: The Ultimate Vegan Cookbook.

Plus the bread of course!

Sounds yummy, Lee. But, I guess you would not be using challah bread, as that is made with eggs, I believe. So, what kind of bread you use instead?

message 3433: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Gundula, I've had vegan challah bread. It's true, that most challah is made with eggs but there are eggless versions.

I didn't know you could get eggless challah bread, I'd like to try that.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Here's what I get when I search google using the words vegan and challah:

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I've just been informed that: "Any recipe for "water challah" should be vegan -- by definition, water challah is challah made with no eggs."

I'll be letting my "Friday night friends" know we can eat vegan challah not just because I'm vegan!

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) The above information about water challah is courtesy of my Goodreads friend Rivka, who can't post herself because she's not a member of this group.

So, is water challah eaten for a specific holy day, like Passover? I have never heard of that type of challah before. I guess I'll need to google it.

I will look for the bread pudding recipe, too, as I had always assumed bread pudding had eggs in it. Thanks for all of the links. :)

message 3439: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, No, I think it's just a kind of challah, that can be eaten on Friday nights. During the 8 days of Passover, no challah of any kind would be eaten because only unleavened bread, such as matzoh, is eaten.

message 3440: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks, Lisa! :) I think I knew that, but Passover was the first word that popped into my head. I'm fascinated by Jewish customs and traditions, but I am a little rusty, I guess. I had a few Jewish friends when I lived in Detroit, but none in Iowa.

message 3441: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jeannette, Although I'm Jewish, I grew up with no Jewish traditions at all. I know all that I know because of a couple of very close Jewish friends whose parents follow Jewish customs.

Lisa wrote: "Jeannette, Although I'm Jewish, I grew up with no Jewish traditions at all. I know all that I know because of a couple of very close Jewish friends whose parents follow Jewish customs."

There is a large Jewish population in the Detroit metro area, and I worked with one lady who is Jewish, and another lady who married a Jewish man (she was raised Catholic). They were raising their kids in both traditions. I am also fascinated with Yiddish, as so much of it has origins in German

I have been living here in Italy for almost 25 years and I really miss the NYC accent of my childhood, like in Guys and Dolls or the Gangster Flicks of the 40s and 50s, which was influenced by Yiddish. Everyone my age who grew up in NYC is practically bi-lingual! lol... my favorite word: tsuris - trouble, aggravation, hassle

Did you sleep in today, after staying up late to read, Christine?

I am going to a book group today at the library. They meet once a month and everyone just brings whatever they have been reading and tells the group about it. I hope it's a little like comfort reads.

Have a great day! Tree-chopping is in my evening plans....

You saw that? Oh, ack! I try not to listen to reviews, but I sooooo should have this time. I'm trying to find a used book site to unload this thing. Usually I keep everything about India, but this was just...so....stupid.
