Hooray for "Taste Nutella Day" at Kathy's! I don't think you'll be disappointed. I went to lunch with a friend and had a cupcake for desert. :)

What time does your friend go to bed, 8pm? Do you ever see this person? Not for me!

Not for me either! We are night owls, and I'm sure we sleep in even later than Kathy.

I can't wait to hear how she likes the Nutella.

message 3353: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Bad news. Nutella Day didn't happen. I opened the jar and the seal inside was already opened on two ends. What the heck? I'm taking it back to the grocery to get a new one. It didn't look like it had been disturbed, but I'm a little too paranoid to eat something where the seal was broken. Darn!

We've (another friend of mine who usually does activities with us) never been able to pin down when my friend goes to bed. We think rather early, like 8, although she has stayed out to go to a movie or a play or the like. Very unusual, and not for me either, not by a long shot.

I went to dinner with a friend tonight. It's turned out to be go to dinner with friends week, had three outings to go eat. I'm meeting my daughter tomorrow morning for a little shopping. She needs some retail therapy, and , so I'm treating her to a couple of new tops. Of course, after receiving the note from her earlier this week thanking me for all I do and telling me that I am a great mother, I will buy her almost anything. LOL!

message 3354: by [deleted user] (new)

Would you like to adopt me? :) I think you are a great mother and I will gladly sing your praises for some retail therapy!

Hi everyone! I'm off to bed (early to rise tomorrow...4:30!!!). Emma has Conference Championships all day tomorrow, but then she'll be done until winter swim starts. Yay! I may sleep in until 7:30, haha!

I haven't been reading at all. It's pitiful. I have nothing worthy to post. Just miss you guys.

Yay!!

Italians like it best on a crunchy roll, or a piece of bread (hefty Italian bread, not flimsy packaged toasting or sandwich white). A French baguette is a good substitute.

It's also good on a graham cracker or other bland cookie.

Enjoy!! Although it's a bit hot for Nutella (it gets quite liquid, so be careful), I'm sure you'll love it!

Bad news about the seal, but I'm with you... dont eat anything that has been opened already.

message 3359: by [deleted user] (new)

I think those paper seals get pulled off sometimes when you open the lid, but take it back anyway, Kathy. What a weird world we live in.

Hi Hayes! I was thinking about you this morning.

Good morning everyone. Happy Saturday! :)

Glad to hear your construction is almost finished! When does school start? Do you have 6 week summer break like they do in Germany?

Looking forward to your pix.

6 weeks? Three months in this country! They start back on the 10 or 12 of September. The Gov has been threatening to push it to the beginning of October. Cretins!

I've had the same problem with Nutella at times, usually in the summer. Oh, I mad the mistake of storing Nutella in the fridge once, it became hard as a rock. And, I like it best with European style bread rolls (German Brötchen).

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, I'd be happy to adopt you, but you have to take me on your next great trip. I finally got a chance to look at all the fantastic pictures on your Norway blog, and I was amazed, just wonderful! Christine, I hope Emma did well today at her meet. You sure do deserve a medal yourself for getting up at 4:30! Hayes, I can't wait to see the pics of your renovated spaces. I haven't had a chance today to take back the Nutella, but maybe tomorrow I will. I started reading Linger this afternoon when I got back from the shopping with my daughter (bought her four tops and some decorative things for the granddaughters' rooms). Unfortunately, I fell asleep before I could read much. I blame it on having been out in the heat today. Enough of the heat wave already. At least give us an 89 to be out of the 90's.

message 3365: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello all! We just got home. Emma and I realized that we spent over 15 hours today going to and being at the meet, and she actually only swims for less than 7 minutes if you combine her events. Haha! Anyway, she did great and we are both wiped out...but we can sleep in tomorrow! Booyah!

I hope that everyone had a great Saturday.

6 weeks in Germany and they stagger it, so the whole country is not on vacation at the same time. I guess they get shorter school days and more time scattered through the year. The US keeps discussing "all year" school, similar to the German model, but it never gets anywhere.

Well, I remember that when I was little and still lived in Germany, we had the six week vacation in the summer, but we also had shorter vacations in the spring and winter. I missed those vacations after we moved to Canada, it was nice to get two weeks off in early spring, you could go skiing etc. And, it's really essential that Germany staggers their vacations, if everyone started their summer holidays on the same day, it would be an absolute traffic chaos (even now, it's horrid whenever one of the "Bundesländer" (provinces) starts their vacation).

message 3370: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, my in-laws tend to stay home during Schulferien. Everyone going to the same places in a few short weeks, can get rather crowded.

Gundula wrote: "And, it's really essential that Germany staggers their vacations, if everyone started their summer holidays on the same day, it would be an absolute traffic chaos."

Which is exactly what happens in Italy. Traditionally everyone goes in August because the Fiat factory closed down in August and what was good for Fiat was good for the rest of the country... unfortunately Italians haven't figured out yet that things have to change and Italians are not generally good at change. And so everyone still goes on vacation in August...

Good morning everyone! We had a really nasty t-storm last night, really high winds. I have posted pics on my profile of the two trees that came down in my yard. It was pretty scary for about 1/2 hour. Blew so hard it pushed rain in under the front door and windows, all of them shut tight.

We get the girl at 11:30! Yay! Otherwise, it's tree work for us.

Have a good one. :)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 1853 comments Jeannette, glad you all are okay. I'm all too familiar with tree debris from storms. We had to have two big trees taken down behind our house by the screened-in porch, as they were a continual threat to the house. And, I hate to complain, Jeannette, but I was hoping for a trip more along the lines of Norway. Enjoy the girl today. Christine, I hope you and Emma have a nice lazy day today, well earned. Hayes, where do you all go on vacation? I guess I think of just being in Italy as a great vacation, so I'm wondering where you and your family call a vacation spot.

Hi Dara! I live in Ames. :)

We didn't get any sirens, and I wouldn't have been able to hear them for the blowing rain and hail, anyway! Parts of Ames are still without power -- how about by you?

message 3379: by [deleted user] (new)

Gundula -- the sirens that come on for a tornado are scary! I didn't go into the basement last night, but a tornado siren would have sent me there for sure. We don't usually get tornadoes during these huge downpours, although I am sure it's possible.

I think sooner than later Ontario is going to have to invest in some tornado sirens etc. as well. We don't get as many tornadoes as the American Midwest, but we have been getting more lately.

How did your visit with your daughter go? Did they get the bad thunderstorms as well? It would have been scary going through this kind of weather in a dormitory like residence.

message 3381: by [deleted user] (new)

My daughter and her roommate slept through it! But, they were in a brick building, away from the weather side. I am very glad she slept through it. We had a great visit -- 4 hours! I made her Kaiserschmarren, but we make them like thick crepes! Her favorite Sunday lunch! She has been writing and reading and discussing and editing! And, talking about the boys, of course! :)

Get better, Christine!! Kaiserschmarren are like a pancake/crepe cross fried in butter, usually served with rum-soaked raisins and whipped cream. We modified them to be thick crepes and serve with cinn-sugar, or fruit (thickened cherries!) and whipped cream. We call them Oma Pacakes, because Oma (Lea's grandma) makes them when we visit. We eat them 2 -3 times a month. I'll have one plain for breakfast tomorrow. :)

Lance Greenfield (lancegreenfieldmitchell) | 697 comments I have always been a big fan of ginger. I LOVE it!

When I was a young boy living in SE Asia, I was introduced to the most refreshing and tasty drink that you could ever imagine. They called it "Gunners," but call it what you will.

The recipe goes like this. Into a big jug, you throw a generous handful of ice, one or two limes chopped into quarters, and about a teaspoonful of Angostura bitters. The you half fill the jug with ginger ale and the other half with ginger beer. Share and enjoy.

Try it, and let me know what you think.
(I am certain that you won't be disappointed)

Good morning everyone! (or good afternoon!) Raining here, and it's supposed to rain all week. This is definitely not typical for July in Iowa. My grass is still green, instead of that lovely brown we get in the summer. I'm just hoping the 1/2 of tree waiting for pickup on the curb doesn't get blown away!

Have a great day everyone! :)

Lance Greenfield (lancegreenfieldmitchell) | 697 comments Don't worry. Ginger beer and ginger ale are non-alcoholic. The bitters adds a tiny % vol to the mix, but not quite enough to prevent a gnat from driving home!

I love ginger ale, especially my hometown brew: Vernor's. I didn't think there was any alcohol in ginger beer, or very little, as it seems to be mentioned in "old-timey" children's lit, if I am remembering correctly. Do you have many gnats with driving permits in the UK? (just kidding)

I went to our Listopia list this just now to vote for Major Pettigrew and had a devil of a time figuring out how to do it. They've changed the design so the vote button is no longer beside the books! You have to actually edit your own list, type in the name of the book at the bottom. It took me quite a while to figure out how to use the new system. I hate it! There is a thread on the feedback group about the change so I put my two cents in.

Sometimes, often, the changes Goodreads makes (especially the ones they decide on that haven't been asked for by members) seem to make things worse, not improve things. It's too bad because I know they work really hard on them, but it's frustrating when they try to "fix" things that aren't broke in the first place.
