Mona,
People never fail to amaze me with the things that they'll just say. I can't imagine saying things to random strangers (or people I know!) like that.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Christine: maybe he talks to strangers because nobody he knows will talk to him. With that kind of personality, it's no wonder.

When I was a bank teller, one day it was really slow so I started to read a COSMOPOLITAN magazine. All of a sudden, a male customer at my window asks me "why are you reading that "man-hater" magazine?

I was taken aback for a minute but couldn't even give him a snappy response because he was a customer. I just told him that's not true and asked him why would he think that. He didn't continue the discussion, finished his business and walked away.

message 2854: by [deleted user] (new)

Accosting a bank teller! One of the last bastions of male dominion, good old boy networking are the financial institutions. I was a bank teller and took my share of rudeness, too. Don't get me started!

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments When I was training, one of the banks was the one where the inmates from the nearby House of Correction would come to cash checks once they're released.

Let me just say that some of these guys were not the most mannered, to put it mildly. I was very relieved that the teller stations had bullet-proof glass.

Not the ideal place to train. Did this bank want to retain employees or not? Or maybe this is where they sent trainees they were wary of firing and hoped they would just quit.

You had it a lot worse than I did! I just had to deal with ordinary people stealing my pen! :) Your job sounds scary. Where were you living at the time and how old were you?

message 2857: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments I was living in Greendale, WI and I was about 21.

message 2858: by [deleted user] (new)

I bet it seems even scarier now, looking back. I remember doing things at 21 that I would never do now! I'm glad you got out of that job!

message 2859: by Mona (last edited Jun 26, 2010 07:41PM) (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette, I didn't quit. I worked for that bank for about 4 years. I remember another incident where the bank staff had gone for training pertaining to bank robberies. I believe police officers were presenting as well.

They actually passed around a huge gun that they said we might see being used. That was bad enough but then the gun went off!!!. Not only was the gun loaded but the safety wasn't on. Luckily nothing worse happened than us being scared out of our mind and some damage to the bank interior. But can you imagine the possible liability if an employee or customer was injured? WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?! That's just it--they weren't.

There were a lot of "incidents" with that bank.

I am going to find Greendale on the map and NOT go there. I grew up in Detroit, and I always thought of Wisconsin as being a safe place full of dairy cows! :)

message 2862: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lisa: Yes, I've had quite the colorful life in my banking career.

Jeannette: The House of Correction was in Franklin, WI, not far from Greendale.

I don't think anyplace is completely safe anymore. Remember, Jeffrey Dahmer lived in Milwaukee and worked at Ambrosia Chocolate.

And that Gacy guy volunteered at a hospital! But now I am creeping myself out!! I hold firmly to the belief that their are more nice people than bad ones out there! :)

Basically, a plate lunch is the meals served at diners consisting of a meat and vegetables, plus a roll or cornbread. Usually, there are different lunches for different days of the week. My friend and I had a salmon pattie, buttered squash, mashed potatoes, and homemade rolls.

Christine, congratulations to Emma! I can't believe that dad said reading books was a waste of time. You need to get a T-shirt to wear that touts the love and/or importance of reading. A tote with the same sort of message would also be great. I say throw it in his face as much as possible. If he dares to open his mouth again about it, tell him that you understand it's not a past time for everyone, it's more of a thinking person's hobby. Zing! What a jerk! I'm not so sure you should have held back on the sunscreen.

Oh, the library sale wasn't too great. They held it in as small a room as they could, so it was impossible to really get to see the books and materials well with the many people there crowding in. I did manage to get a couple of audio books for my granddaughter and a couple of books on Shakespeare for me.

Good morning everyone! Time for the big match-up between England and Germany! Good thing the neighbors are away for the weekend and we have their key. We don't have cable TV. :) I am going along, but I'm taking my book with me. I am enjoying my quick, fluff reads this week. Just the thing for jetlagged brain cells!

Have a great day! Hope you are still with us, Hayes! :)

They did the same thing at ours. They put the books that they couldn't fit on the tables under them in boxes so you had people bent over plowing through the boxes. I was worried about the poor books getting bent and stepped on!

Actually, I bet you could watch it online. Have you looked into that?

Christine, internet is never as good as the television. But, they are happy to record it and my husband just stays away from the news until he watches. Plus, some of the games are on ABC (we watched the US team yesterday), so the final might be on ABC.

I finished another book today, just a little romance book, but I really enjoyed it. It is hot and muggy here, so I am feeling lazy anyway.....

Lisa,Christine, and Kathy: I barely get a chance to read my books and you all are asking me to write one?!

How about if I just feed you guys tidbits as I recall them. Here's another one:

When I was working in one of the banks, there was this guy I worked with and eventually we ended up sharing a cubicle. One day he mentioned that he had to meet with his parole officer. I asked him what he was on parole for and he said, very casually, "murder." WHAT?!
After a moment of shock, I asked him how he managed to get hired here at the bank. And he said that his fingerprint record kind of fell through the cracks and he wasn't forthcoming in his job application.

He was the kind of guy that either you liked him or you didn't. Most didn't. He was a smart guy and learned fast. We got along well. I'm not sure what that says about me. Anyway, he eventually was let go for downloading porn on his computer. Somebody walked by and saw him and ratted him out. They were just looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

message 2878: by [deleted user] (new)

Well, what a surprise that someone wanted to get rid of him!

Yet another reason to homeschool. You never know the background of the people who your child will be contact with.

message 2882: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments You all keep reminding me of other "characters" I used to work with.

When I was working in Operations, there was this girl who worked 2nd shift. She also worked as a cage dancer. She would go to the club as soon as she finished her shift.

The issue with her was that she would wear her club outfits to work. These outfits didn't exactly conform to the dress code. We were allowed casual attire because we didn't have customer contact but...

She would wear skin-tight leopard print pants with a top exposing her mid-riff and piercings along with boots. She had quite the wardrobe.

But nobody would say anything to her because they were afraid of her family--I think they were in the mafia or something.

message 2883: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Mona, I don't care if you don't have time to read or live. ;-) You should write a book! Maybe you can tell your stories to a writer, which would take less time on your part.

message 2884: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Lisa: But if I'm not living...?

Anyway, I can only think of one more. When I was a teller in a different bank, we would have these branch parties every once in a while at a near-by restaurant.

Usually, in my experience, the branch manager would just make an appearance and leave.

But this particular manager was always the first one of us to arrive and was always drunk by the time we got there. Usually she was pretty uptight, professional, and aloof. But at the parties she would loosen up quite a bit. She would take her suit jacket off and un-tuck her blouse and be friendlier than usual.

Gee, Mona, all I ever got was a carrot, with green top, in the drive-up tube! Oh, and a guy rolling his own in the car..... :)

message 2886: by Mona (last edited Jun 27, 2010 01:17PM) (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Jeannette: When I was working the drive-thru,I did have a guy give me a deposit slip for the wrong bank and when I asked him where he wanted to make the deposit, he said the one named on the slip.

I told him that bank is across the street. He then had the audacity to ask me run over and make his deposit for him on my break! When I told him, I couldn't, he peeled off in anger.

Our customers were really spoiled and had a sense of entitlement which the manager enabled. One customer even had "GOD" as a vanity license plate.

A carrot? A guy rolling his own? Not exactly run of the mill.

When I was training, they told me about a trainee they recently fired for "lack of common sense." Apparently, a guy came though the drive-thru and pointed a gun at her. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the windows in drive-thru bullet-proof? Anyway, not only was she going to empty the top drawer, she offered the bundled money in the bottom drawer too!!!

message 2887: by [deleted user] (new)

I had some crazies, but a lot of sweet ones, too! The owner of Popeye's Chicken always brought me the toys from the kid's meals. Another business customer brought me flowers once (I think he had made some kind of mistake in his deposit -- I don't know if he liked me or not). We also had a customer with a kid named Country Joe (seriously). He had a dog that drooled all over the tube, waiting for a dog treat. I don't know why the guy sent in the carrot from his garden!! lol

Yep, my birthday is the day before the USA's, so I always get fireworks and a day off! :)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 492 comments Good Morning Everyone :)

Actually I was up a couple hours ago.

I have a lot of stuff I need to do today:
1. Finish munchkin's home-school enrollment application
2. Make cheese
3. Attack sink full of dishes before it starts smelling nasty and little fruit fly thingies start flying around
4. Sunday paper
5. empty DVR
6. go to library :)

The first 3 are mandatory and #6 is something to look forward to.

As for the bank stories, all this happened about 20 years ago but, like Jeannette, I will never forget them.

Are you making paneer, Mona? I've seen it done, but never tried it.

message 2899: by [deleted user] (new)

Mona, You need to do an application to homeschool? I find the differences between states to be amazing. In Maryland I had to keep documentation of every single thing and turn in proof of art/music/physical ed. In Illinois I only needed to tell the school district that I was homeschooling. That's it. Of course, I kept the documentation just in case, but I was amazed that they didn't require more.

Jeannette: Yes, I'm making paneer. It's not hard, just labor intensive. It doesn't last long in our house. All of us love it. You can buy it pre-made at the Indian grocery store but you'll pay for the convenience factor.
